Does this bonus work retro retroactively? For example, say I was a level 5 Mage with 15 Consitution and used this book to knock it up to 16, would I then get an automatic +5 HP, or would I only gain the bonus HP from levels to come?

Unless I am very much mistaken, it is indeed retroactive.
