Hey, some of my neighbors were talking about starting up a multiplayer game and asked me to be the party leader given the fact that I've been playing longer than they have. Most of them have been playing for a few years and are experienced enough that they want a party of unconventional builds, all using non-mainstream weapons (i.e. no Carsomyr for paladins, no Staff of Magi for wizards/sorcerers, no Tuigan/Gesen for archers).

We've decided on one thief class, one priest class, two warrior builds (one melee, one ranged), one arcane spellcaster, and one non-traditional class (bard, monk, or druid). In the end, this is what we came up with.

Leader (me): half-elf Jester/Skald or human Monk
#2: halfling Assassin
#3: human Undead Hunter
#4: elven Wild Mage
#5: dwarven Priest of Lathander
#6: dwarven Barbarian

I'm thinking to go with the Skald, since it will add a bit of magic as well as giving all my party members +4 to hit and damage at higher levels. I also like the Jester: I confuse, and my team wipes out the place. The Monk is nice too, as it gives me a chance to see the true power of the class without always relying the mundane hit-and-run tactics.

So far, we've decided that the Undead Hunter will use the Firetooth for ranged attacking. The mage will rely on the Staff of Rynn and the Staff of Striking. The cleric will use the best shield available with either a warhammer or a mace. The Barbarian will be using spears, specifically the Spear of Kuldahar until he gets the Impaler spear.

So I need some help. What are some non-traditional but good weapons we can put onto a Jester/Skald, an Assassin, and a melee tool for an Undead Hunter?

Halberds would be a good idea, I think. For the Bard or for the Undead hunter - with Dragon's Breath and the Ravager there are two really strong ones in the game, and early on it is easy to obtain the Dragonbane or the Harmonium Halberd, for example.

I liked to play my Bard with throwing axes in Icewind Dale 2, as far as I remember. There are some good ones in the game, Azureblade or Hangards Axe quite early on. Of course, the bard could use anything... throwing daggers would also be nice.

For the assassin, I don't know what you think is conventional... unusual choices would definetly be scimitars or clubs here.

I like the idea of halberds on a Skald, they remind me of those ginormous viking axes. As for halberds on a Jester, EVEN BETTER! A crazy Jester who broke into the castle armory and filched the polearms of the most powerful knights, then set off on a ka-razy ad-ven-chore. :D

As for the UH, since I'm giving the bard the halberd, I'd like us to go the classic sword-and-shield route with the paladin. I'm thinking two points in two-handed weapon style for the UH with spears as backup, and the primary weapon being bastard swords (for Foebane and Purifier later on). How I wish paladins could wield spears with shields... we seriously need a Spartan kit for the Fighter class. :D

Assassins generally use daggers and short swords RPing wise, so I was thinking maybe an Oriental Scorpionish type assassin or bounty hunter using katanas... but then there are no good katanas in ToB and Fury doesn't cut it there. So maybe for the thief I can keep it classic.

Thanks for the ideas Enuhal, I'll put them across to my people and see what they think.

Using clubs on the assassin seems like a fun option, and there are 2 decent ones to be found in the trademeet/druid grove area (+2 and +3). Not so sure about the longevity of them though.

Something to keep in mind if you're trying to choose between a skald and a jester (and role-playing is secondary, of course) is that there is a harp you can get quite early that has the same effect as the jester's song. Of course it doesn't increase in power with level ...
