Now I understand those people in a fanfic thread saying "I absolutely hate the name Elissa!" I sat there, wondering how you could *hate* a name, and now I know.

Funny, I thought the opposite. The Edge wrote...
I think Garret is fine, but Marian? I don't know...
Anyway I chose John in ME with the default face, so I think I'll do the same with DA2.

Garrett? How silly. I'd never play a character with that name.
I'm certainly not going to make him a rogue and try to make him a master thief, entering combat only when necessary.
Hehe, now I know I'm going to play as a cynical rogue in Dragon Age 2. Thief I/II are my favourite games ever.

Garret? No, I think not. I frelling hate default first names.
Why? What's in a name? Besides, you can change it, and it isn't alluded to at all during the game anyways. In ME, people always call you Shepard, never by your first name. In fact, it may have been better if it did, it was really awkward during the Liara romance when she'd call my PC Shepard instead of by his first name right before they slept together. A default name would probably have allowed conversations to flow better.
From the threads I've seen here, a lot of players put too much focus on the name/gender/appearance customization. I mean, yes, it's nice to have the ability to play as male or female, as well as have over 20 different types of mustache available to my character, but it's a distant second to having a huge variety of unique builds, skills, and character types with lots of interesting trade-offs.

I surely won't. Especially Marian, what a horrible name. In my country Marian is a male name... as is in almost all Slavic countries.
True, in my country Marian is a male name

While "Garret" is certainly workable I'm still sticking with Ebon Hawke.

I like to change the default names to something of my own, maybe Leona or Athena for my fem Hawke and Jace or Gabriel for my male Hawke.
Don’t get me wrong Garrett and Marian are fine names but not for me.

ETA: to be on topic
I'm OK with Garrett, but I'm not fond of Marian, so it's a good thing we can change the first name. Maybe, as time will pass, I will change my mind about it.

I suspect that would be awkward if you showed him the game.

Also noteworthy is that both default names are still very different to the more bland John/Jane Shepard defaults of the ME franchise. I never use the default settings in ME either, and I can see why something inoffensive and whatnot works well with marketing but I do sometimes wish that 'box cover Shepard' was more interesting and unique.
