Or we could just not do that. It only becomes a problem if you underline it by having the dialogue require an introduction.Oblivionous wrote...
With the voice acting, how will the PC Hawke introduce him/her self in the dialogue? In DAO the pc didn't speak so introducing yourself was never voiced, thus no problem for names other than the default. But will there be a pause where the voice actor stops and then picks up again? EX: "Pleased to meet you. My name is __(insert name&no audio)__ Hawke." Cause that breaks my immersion right there if so.

I thought he said Garrick, not Garret/Garrett. Maybe that's just me. Garrick sounds better, regardless. Either way, I'll be playing a custom Fem!Hawke, so it matters not to me.
Wasn't Garrick also the name of that obnoxious bard companion in Baldur's Gate? The same bard that I totally unintentionally sent into the middle of a group of wyverns alone?

I hope you built up some endurance. You'll be playing with him for hours.
Well, with the surname Hawke, I'll need that endurance anyway. It just bugs me, that name.
In fact, I'll probably make my "default" playthrough (assuming our savegames are needed for DA3) a female, and make up a more proper name for her.

While it's not a big issue, it will strike me as weird and go further (for me, personally, and I know, one lone voice - waah, waah) to lessen my personal connection to the character. The simplicity of being able to pick as a response "My name is X, pleased to meet you." is such a staple of cRPGs with dialog options for me that I will really notice it missing. As I did in ME, trust me.
I know, I know, it has "zero story effect" and the voiced NPCs never used your name anyway (though unvoiced NPCs used to...) so "what's the big deal", right?
It's a bigger deal for me than a framed narrative is all.

I doubt everyone would even notice if they just skipped introductions and went on to the matter at hand. I think in DA:O there were so many introductions because of the different Origins and they wanted you to noitice a difference. But it doesn't really make the game any more shallow or deeper.

Well, the introductions are still perfectly possible, just not on first name basis.MerinTB wrote...

Also ambassador Udina, captain Anderson and about any other brass of Alliance military... even with Wrex this is somewhat muddled since he's "Urdnot Wrex" but the clan name comes first and i'm not sure if it functions the same way human last names do.AlexXIV wrote...

Well you have Miranda, Jakob, Jack, Grunt, Tali, Garrus, ... you never call them by their lastnames, but they do. It is not like it matters and we all know it is the only way really, unless they would choose the firstname for us as well. But just saying it is less than perfect.

Not everyone, no.
But I just said I would, and that I did in ME (as well as other games that you don't get to.)
I do notice. Trust me on what I notice or not.
It makes the game deeper for me. Not for you, maybe not for many others.
But I was speaking for myself anyway.

Garrett seems so uninspiring and mellow. I just can't get behind it.
I knew that Lady Hawke was the only possible name I could use for fem Hawke but until like 40 seconds ago I couldn't think of a good guy name. Now I have. And I regret it
Lavernius.
Well I'm all set for the game now.

I don't know why BioWare think it's so cool to be called by your character's surname by every person you meet in the game. I mean, if you give him a surname that I can't change like in ME, give him a first name also so that at least the friends, family and lovers of my character could call him by name in a more natural way than what happens in Mass Effect (even if at least there you are in a different setting, not in a fantasy world where almost everyone is known by his/her first name).

More than likely brother or sister. I mean I don't always call my sister by her name unless it's important.

Each person's personal experiences are different, but...
I never call my brother "brother" -
and my sister and I do say "brother" or "sister", but only in voice-mails because we think it's funny. I never call her sister, or her call me brother, when we are face to face.
The only times in my life that I witnessed myself being called my last name was by people who were insulting me, or in the military (which, half the time, is still insulting me.)
I have a last name that people liked to make fun of and it wasn't a fun experience growing up, so I'm quite sensitive to it.
Hence why "Shepard" always bugged the crap outta me. <_<
