People often call me by my last name, so
maybe it's not as weird to me to hear them refer to Shepard that way?
Though to be fair it does get weird during romances.

Yeah, but I didn't mean to say that no one should call you by your surname in the game, just that everyone calling you that way doesn't work that good, at least not to me.
Actually, let's make some examples with ME, it's okay that your captain call you by it, as it's ok for Udina and for the other formal relationship you have. It doesn't work so fine for your close friends and your lovers.
In a fantasy setting it works even worse, because almost every character in the game is called and renowned by their first name (Teagan, Eamon, Loghain, Duncan, etc...).

I just don't understand how will Bethany call you. It would be pretty wierd if Hawke's sister called him/her "Hawke" or "Mage/Warrior/Rogue" or "Champion"? Will she just call him "brother" or "sister" ?

She will probably just call you "brother" or "sister".

If Garrett Hawke is voiced by Stephen Russell I'm totally going to play as a Rogue.

Seek they to undo thy works and subvert thy thoughts." -The Sermon of St. Edgar
"Set thy bricks with the bones of heathens, and mix thy mortar with their blood." -Hammerite Book of Structure
Thief 3 is great. So the main character is Garret? What does he do to get the darkspawn angry at him? Does he rob them? Does he also lose an eye half way into the game?

Perhaps Bethany won't even directly address you. If she wants your attention, she might just turn to you and say "Hey" or something. When referring to you in the third person, she might say "my brother" or "my sister", but I can imagine pretty simple workarounds to avoid direct name reference when speaking to one another.

Just, please, not pup, that was pants!.  I was happy to let Bryce die for such a pathetic nickname.

pants, as to mean rubbish, possibly a colloquialism?.

I was very happy to let Bryce Cousland snuff it after hearing such a nauseatingly twee nickname applied to what in my experience was grown man.

Sticking with Deavon, it's been my character's name for every RPG or MMO that I have ever played.

I have a last name that people liked to make fun of and it wasn't a fun experience growing up, so I'm quite sensitive to it.

Cool story bro

The intellectual response, I see.  How very nice.
May your own life be as meaningful and scintillating  as your repartee.

Aww, I liked pup!

Maybe it's because my family tossed around nicknames like biscuits, honey, sweetums, honeybun, chunky-monkey, and doody-head randomly to different members, my pretend dad calling me pup didn't seem that out of the ordinary or insulting.

Does anyone else picture someone named Marian or Garrett reading this thread, huddling in a corner in the dark with new-found self-esteem issues?

No, I'm naming my male Hawke Isildur or Elendil, and female Hawke will be Eowyn or Idril.

I'm fine with those names. Though at some point I'd be tempted to make a Lady Hawke. But only if she can fall into love with a knight, and the both of them get cursed by a evil priest.

To make them feel better: I like both names well enough, Marian definitely sounds suitably Mediaeval. Garrett is maybe a little 'American' sounding for my tastes, but it's irrelevant anyway. I never name my characters the defaults - though sometimes I try to use the same first letter. Madge and Geoffrey, anyone?

....I had to live with "honey bunny" for 17 years. Being called "pup" by an old man didn't even phase me.

I had a waaaaaaaay more embarrassing nickname than 'pup' when I was a kid, and I have in turn inflicted embarrassing nicknames on my own children. 'Tis the way of things.

Mike Hawke, supreme mage leader of the Union of Free Soviet Socialist Marches. The tales of his great fights against elvish counterrevolutionaries will go down in legend.

Frankly, I'm disappointed that he is the "Champion of Kirkwall." I'd rather just have the city renamed after my guy. They could call it Hawkwall and erect a giant statue of my mage with two lusty Qunari concubines at his feet.

Yeah really, unless its named after James T Kirk, that damn town better be renamed after Hawke. Or Bethany...since...you know...she isn't living past the tutorial...

Give yourselves the first name 'Kirk', then the city is named after you. Ok so technically you're named after it, but whatever. Roleplay, dammit! :P

Hmmmm. Kirkwall - James T Kirk. Garrett Hawke - Garrett Wang. Flemeth - Kate Mulgrew. This isn't Dragon Age. It's Star Trek the RPG - we just won't know it until an away team comprised of Picard, Troi and a heavily disguised Worf beam down at the end of the game. Ta da!

"Yo bro..." no matter if you're a male or female...

Seriously though, I didn't really like the name Garrett until someone mentioned Thief... Now I MUST have a rogue character named Garrett. Hoods please Bioware :o
Just waiting for someone to make Marian less Robin Hood-y for me... any minute now....
