Right, this is what I remember too.  It's been a long while since I played the game, but I don't think my memory is that bad.  For example: Elminster.  He appears three times or so and discusses things that are pretty specific to the main character.  Those conversations wouldn't make sense if you had, say, Safana as the one who was literally talking to him.  It would read like Safana was pretending to be the main character.

So, Sylvius, I don't think BG1 was quite as flawless in this respect as you seem to think it was.

But it was.  The NPCs were speaking to the party, and the party members could act as spokesman.  The game was clearly designed specifically for this, as the text colour of the dialogue would change to suit which character was speaking.

Plus, the game's manual even told ou to put a character with a high Charisma at the front so you could gain benefits in conversations.

And regardless of how well implemented BG or BG2 was, it's still a great design that allows far more flexibility on the part of the player.  You're then free to roleplay any personality type you like without having to break character by engaging in conversation.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this then.

I started replaying the game only a couple months ago and finished it quite recently, and most of the dialogue was aimed at a single individual who was clearly meant to be taken as the player character. You can exploit the dialogue system by using a character with a high charisma it's true, but just because you can convince Tamoko to back down without fighting her with Imoen and not your low CHR PC doesn't change the fact that she is speaking directly to the protagonist. I also don't remember the text color ever changing.

I agree, but I wouldn't be expecting that from a BioWare game as they seem to like to do storylines where the player character is the center of the plot.

That depends entirely on how you look at the plot.

I recall each character's name having a different color, but I didn't understand why Sylvius thought that was relevant to his point.  Needless to say, what I remember about the game falls in line with what you said about it.

Oh, the irony. I actually wanted to name him "Garrett" even before the names were announced. I'll definitely use the default name.

My DA:O character's first name is Garrett.

Yes, as you can see in the (at least) two other threads floating around about what people are going to name their character.

My mistake. I'm still not sure it was worth resurrecting a month-old thread for, though.

Probably gonna name mine "F**k You" so it goes "F**k You Hawke".

Such a badass that he insults the most powerful badass around.

.....

Himself

Causing a perpetual absorbtion of badass, as his name stays constant his insult stays and keeps insulting the most powerful badass, causing him to become exponentialy more badass by the second.

God help him though, If he absorbs too much badass at once, he may spontaneously explode in a fiery death of badass.

That's badass.

NO! IT'S INCREASING EVEN MORE! HE'S REACHING CRITICAL BAD-M-ASS

I'll probably stick to default. My human noble is always named Aedan/Elissa. Same with other origins. This is the age of voice acting, you know. Little point in creating custom names.

Marian seems too feminine to be to be the name of a kick-*ss warrior. Although now that people have said that Marian is a man's name in other countries I might have to reconsider my opinion.
