Given that DA2 spans 10 years, and given that those 10 years are experienced in smallish pieces separated by long periods featuring no gameplay (as I understand it), is it possible that we won't have access to all of the companions at the same time?

Perhaps we'll have some companions in the first act, and then a different set of companions (likely with some crossover) in the next act.  And then in the third act get an entirely new set.  And then in the fourth meet bunch of folks from the first act again.

Or something like that.

It strikes me as unlikely that we'll be able to assemble one group and keep it together for 10 years.

You underestimate the power of fiction. I wouldn't be surprised to see it go either way.

We've been speculating about this for a while. Personally, I agree with you that it would be difficult to keep someone by your side for ten years. On the other hand, I question whether Bioware would want to under utilize a companion that they put so much work into. I suppose that, at this stage, it's anyone's guess.

I'm assuming it works like this:

People who are directly linked with your mission will remain with you for the duration, such as Bethany.

Some companions might decide to leave and never return after their mission is complete.

Some might pop in here or there.

Romance characters will stay with you if romanced.

Your sister will most likely remain loyal. As for your other companions, I guess Hawke has good leadership skills ;)

imo well propably have choices who well take into the next chapter and who not. it would horribly suck if we couldn't take beloved chars with us because the game doesn't want us to.

Probably some will have obligatory, plotline deaths, others may die and be replaced depending on the player's actions, others (including the chosen LI?) will remain throughout the whole story.

It sounds interesting to me.
