What is the bar underneath the skill categories such as Spirit, Creation, etc.?  I notice when I choose skills in the category it moves up but I do not know why.    Is this merely a percentage bar of the skill  completion or is it in reference to something greater?

Yeah, I think it's just a percentage bar of how much you've learned from that specific skill tree. Nothing more, though it might play into specifically unlocking the achievements.

Pretty sure it's just what percent of those you have.

Think it's for achievements for all of the skills in a categories.

It's completion, how far into that skill tree you have gone.

It's affinity. A discarded pre-release mechanic that lessened mana cost as you learned more from a school.

I wonder why they scrapped it. That would have been cool.

Playing a mage now: They probably scrapped it as mages become powerful enough later on as is, if you made them more... I hardly ever run out of mana as is in fights, and then (usually boss fights) I just chug a couple potions.
