I was wondering what you guys thought about racial enemies. I'm trying to roleplay a 'realistic' character and that's why I chose Hobgoblins. It doesn't seem right to me to hate a race which can't even speak common. Sure. They can be a problem, but how can they be your nemesis? From the choices in Baldur's Gate number one only Ogres and Hobgoblins speak common right? That's why I chose Hobgoblins; they seem to hate elves according to lore and so it seems fitting for my half-elven Ranger/Cleric. What do you guys pick most of the time?

You half-elves are all racist.
I understand the racial enemy more like something the ranger (ranger/cleric in your case) has to fight against most of the time.

Yeah, but that dude has spent his whole life in a keep. What is his racial enemy then? Reevor's rats :')?

From a naive, role playing standpoint, I'd think it would be OK to want to have an edge against Dragons. They're the biggest, baddest species of critters you would reasonably expect to encounter.

True, but you can't choose them in BG1 (I play with the two widescreen mods).

Me too actually. Spiders are always... nasty.
In BG2 I either go with Dragons or... whatever

Don't forget that Gorion fills the PCs head with numerous adventure tales as a bard might tell them.
I think it's believable for the player to have an immense disgust for Illithids and the likes, for instance, even useful things such as liches.

Dragons or Demons. Might as well go against something that needs the extra boost.

Heck, it's been established that some of the monks at the Candlekeep are capable summoners, so they could have summoned goblins or hobgoblins for you to fight, or anything else conceivable like the more likely celestial badger.

Well... Obe WAS "arsked" kindly by the Sentinel to make some summons... kobolds, hobgoblins, gibberlings and xvarts weren't new things to the player. How much the past things went... I don't know

Can a RC summon creatures that are actually their racial enemy?

Talking about specific opponents, do werewolfes count as shapechangers? (does the bastard sword +1 +3 against Shapeshifters deal the extra damage?)

Based on a quick looksie with Near Infinity, I'm going to say yes.

Aerie I can understand, but is Cespenar that much worse than all those half-potted dwarven smiths who keep hinting that it would be nice if you would run out and fetch them some Ale (strong, dwarven type only) in addition to the 5,000 gp you just parted with?
It's more the fact that the written dialogue could've made for a damn good character, but the voice actor just seemed to... Well... Go about it wrong.
