Hey guys, I've recently decided to attempt to dust off this old game and play it through again. I have the Steam/D2D version now. It works, after many workarounds (playing in windowed mode, lower resolution, .ini tweaks, etc). The issue I'm having is that the framerate is consistently terrible. I'm getting maybe 1-2 frames per second throughout the entire game. It's only playable because the majority of the game isn't really action-based, but there are certain parts, such as swoop racing, that are literally impossible.
I would like to know if anyone has had any success getting this game to run smoothly on a modern system!
I have seen at least one option for a mod that allows the game to run in 1920x1080 resolution... but it looked like even the mod needed a workaround to run with the Steam version, and I wasn't sure that I wouldn't have the same issues while running in full screen mode that I am now, so I didn't bother. It seems to me that the problem is probably something like the game isn't supporting my graphics card (which is a practically brand new nVidia GTX275).
KOTOR 1, Windows 7, new GFX card... any ideas?

Sorry, I did not get Kotor 1 work in Windows 7 at all, did not even get so far as start menu. How ever, it did work fine with Windows 2000 pro. My other computer I use, both 1600x1200 resolution.

I have the Steam version running on Vista 64 in full screen mode (at 1280x1024). The in game settings for antialiasing and soft shadows are forced off though. I've not seen any frame rate issues yet, although I've not got that far into the game.
I have a 1GB Radeon 5770 and the latest drivers.

I never had any trouble running the game in Windows Vista. When I upgraded to 7 however, it was actually fairly difficult to get it to run at all, and now I have this frame rate issue.

I got 7 64-bit and an ATI graphics card and both the steam version of KOTOR 1 and KOTOR II run with no problems (the later is unpatched though)

I'm not using the Steam version however I thought I would try installing KotOR on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system since I still have my original KotOR install discs for PC.
- Installed to Program Files (x86) directory using account with administrative privileges
- Applied 1.03 patch
That was it. I fired up the game and after changing my settings (screen resolution, enable Vsync) via the launcher I got to the load screen for the game and I couldn't get any of the buttons to respond to a mouse click. Once I switched out of the KotOR window to the Windows desktop and then switched back to KotOR then the game worked fine. I played the entire Endire Spire level and reached Taris with no issues. I'm at a loss as to why andysdead is having a different experience.
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.8 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
VIDEO: NVIDIA GTS 250 (196.21 drivers)
AUDIO: Not sure on this one. I know my mainboard has integrated Realtek ALC889A audio chipset but DXDiag says I'm using HdAudio.sys ver. 6.01.7600.16385 as the driver. Sound works fine for me though.
Anyway, hopefully this info helps in some fashion or form.

OK, so I tried turning Vsync off, antialiasing was already off, it didn't help the frame rate at all. The game looked like it was about to freeze up just going into the video options, actually, but eventually they loaded. I'm not sure what version I'm running, I should make sure it's up to date.

Version 1.03. So it's current... IDK what else to do.

Yah, that's a great link. However I'm now wondering why my KotOR installation on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit didn't need to go through all the stuff outlined in that thread. So far my only issue is the on-screen buttons not working when the game first loads. After I alt+tab out to the Windows desktop and alt+tab back the buttons work. I guess I'll play some more to see if my luck holds out.

As far as I can tell, that link doesn't help me. It seems to be mostly for KOTOR2, which works just find in Windows 7, without most of the tweaks that are mentioned.

I got the Steam version on this one with no issues and I run on Vista 64 bit. As far as the game not running you might want to see if turning silly things off like the sound and video gets you in. I know it's a KOTOR 2 thing but it might work

So after playing KotOR some more I've discovered it's not as stable on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit as it was when I was running Windows XP Pro 32-bit. The game locks up on me often enough to be fairly annoying though not often enough for me to stop playing KotOR (for the umpteenth time). When the game freezes it's typically during combat sequences.
The only thing I can think of is andysdead's vid card is GT200 whereas my card is G92b, the previous generation of NVIDIA GPU. If somebody else is successfully running KotOR on Windows 7 with a GT200 card (GTX 260 or higher) then please let us know what you did to get KotOR running on your PC.
