I'm having the same issue. I've restarted the game a few times, for various reasons (bad talent choices, wanted a different beard, etc.) and have finally settled on a character that I think I'll stick with to the end. Of course, this left me with a few aborted characters cluttering up my online profile.
I've tried half a dozen times to delete the characters from my online profile page, but they keep coming back. I've tried everything I could think of to keep them from coming back. I have manually removed their folders from the "Characters" folder and trashed them. I've even tried deleting the Profile.dap file in the "Settings" folder. No joy.
I suspect that the problem is on the server side. It doesn't seem that the game could be re-uploading the data after it's been deleted. I'd guess the data is still being stored on the server even after we tell the site we want it deleted.
Come to think of it, it seems to be happening as a result of the syncing process. This morning I looked at my profile once, and it correctly showed the one character I'm playing. I looked at it again a few minutes later, and it showed that character plus all my old deleted characters. Could it be that my first access of the profile triggered a sync operation that caused the system to dredge up all my old data?

To be honest, I can live without this online profile business. I've been playing CRPGs for years and I've never felt deprived because I didn't have an easy way to display my characters to the world. Oh, I can see how automated player profiles could be useful in building a community for a game like DA:O. But to achieve this end, it has to be done
right. Among other things, this means
not displaying every last aborted character regardless of the player's intentions.
As it stands, the player profile functionality isn't adding much to the game. To the contrary, it is becoming a distraction. I'm spending time worrying about my profile, when I could be playing the game. The existence of the "Delete" button on the "Manage Characters" page leads me to believe that Bioware wants us to have this control over what characters get displayed in our player profiles. I'd like to see the system fixed so that it works right.
The game itself is just wonderful, so far. I'm really impressed with the care the developers put into all aspects of the game, from graphics to writing to gameplay. I just wish as much attention had been given to the online profile component...
