Hello,

I just installed Dragon's Age Origins for the first time, and am having a problem.  The installation went fine, and when I click on the icon on my screen, the opening screen appears. However when I click on "play" my monitor goes black, and I get a Windows error saying "Dragons Age has encountered a problem and needs to close".

I would appreciate any help with this, as it's the weekend and I cannot contact EA suport. Thanks.

Is your game fully patched?

Vista, or Windows 7? Did you install the retail version from DVD, or a digital download? You may have installed the game without correct compatibility settings.

Can you give some system specs? You know the drill: graphics card model, System RAM, and whatnot. I'm wondering if the game might have set to too high a resolution or refresh rate, and you might be able to tweak some settings in the game launcher's configuration utility.

Try to update DirectX with the latest version available here (do not forget to select the language appropriate to your system).

Also, if you have a version of PhysX software already installed on your computer, try to uninstall it and to reinstall the version supplied with DA:O

Jack,

Thanks very much for the help. I went to the site you linked, downloaded and installed the latest version, but am still getting the same error as before.

Have you also tried to uninstall/reinstall PhysX as I suggested?

Just curious: what resolution are you trying to run the game at? What are the graphics settings in the launch configuration utility? The black screen crashes happened to me in my old XP days when sometimes the game could be a little too demanding for the settings I was using.

I had the same thought, and set it to much lower graphics settings, but no change. Posted Image

Since I seem to have exhausted things here, can anyone point me to a phone number at EA where I can get some technical support assistance? And what their hours are? Their website seems to be programmed to keep that information completely hidden.

It's very frustrating to buy a game and have it completely fail to run. That's only happened to me a few times in over 20 years of gaming. And I was really looking forward to playing Dragon Age.

Thanks for any help with this.
