Seriously, getting sick of trying this thing. How the flaming hell are you supposed to beat the ambush? About ten seconds and a party member's dead. Ten more seconds and another goes. At that point I swear at the computer and yank the plug.
What happens on a TPK anyway?
Please somebody give me a hint as to something that might vaguely work on this #$%& scenario.
Can't beat the #$%& Zevran ambush

Use mana clash on the mage, and CC on the melee attackers.

- What party / group are you using?
- What difficulty are you playing on?
- Are you a strategic or a action oriented guy?
- Do you have the best equipment on each member, from your inventory?

Kill the mage first. Don't let the rogues backstab you. Don't overlook the CC you have--Pommel Strike, Dirty Fighting, Shield Bash--use all of it.

Mage has to die ASAP. Crowd Control will take care of the melee, preferably Cone of Cold or Glyphs. If you have an Archer, you could Pin or Shatter the mage for quick interrupts. My method of choice is Paralyses Explosion. Set it and forget it. I don't recommend having one of your guys running down the middle to gun the mage down. You'll will see the flood gates of rogues close in on them which will result in unrecoverable backstabs. For your health.

Bombs take down the rogues quickly. But as the others say, the mage is first priority.

Use Dog w/Overwhelm, which he should have by this point, to neutralize one or another of the attackers. Pause things frequently to shift POV and micro-manage different party members. This encounter is *not* in my top 5 of hardest encounters in the game...

After the mage is dead you can pull your party back to the lower right hand side of the screen and partially "hide" under the cliff there. It gets a bit of the missile fire off your back while you take care of the melee.

Drop a Fireball on the enemy mage. Your party can take the damage better than the assassins can. While everybody is floundering on the ground, take out the mage first. After that, use your mages to take out some of the archers; they don't react very well to fire or cold.

How are you attempting it?
I'm using PC (backstabber), Leliana, Alistair, and Morrigan. Did it without much trouble like this:
Stun and kill the mage with range (all you got - mages, archers) - pinning shot, freezing, horror, paralysis, whatever to keep her mouth shut - while dealing damage (again - range only).
Don't run after her - she will lead you into traps and you'll get slaughtered.
In the meantime, tank is taunting and fighting assassins while backstabber fights the same enemy as them. I saved the archers for last. Don't make the mistake of thinking that Zevran will take forever to kill because he's the most powerful - he goes down pretty quick.
When all you got left is archers, it's gravy - even with the traps.

This fight is easy for me but I always do some of the DLC after Lothering, then the Mages tower so my party is super strong in relation to the challenge of this encounter. I can see this being challenging without the extra XP and godly goodies from the DLC and Mages Tower.
Contrary to some other posters here, I fire off a disabling talent/spell on the mage and then run a character right over to her. Even just the stone fist spell works well here, you just need to disable her for a few seconds in time for a rogue or shield warrior to get close enough for their stun talents. Once the mage is down, you should concentrate your attacks so as to quickly whittle down the mob.
Fireball, if you have it, is very useful here as is CoC. Fireball the melee and mage mob, then once the mage is down, fireball is probably recharged so use it on the archers to the left.

Before, the ambush hits in, I stand a bit far. Have morrigan cast spell bloom, and w/e aoe spell she has.
ANd ride into battle.
Fire ball, on the cliff to my left.
The rest is mop up.
tested on Normal, and hard... on hard to 2 times

Like others have said, the key is the mage. Mages have no fewer than 8 spell spells than can contain her. Use one....profit. The mage is the woman who met you at the road and is tagged "traveler" I think, or something other than mage....the only one there in a dress.
The issue with that fight is that it can be significantly more difficult the lower the level that you draw it. While the attacker's level does scale somewhat with the main character's, it does not seem to be consistant.
I have previously been able to disable a couple of the traps before triggering the encounter. I am not sure if that is a glitch or the effects of high stealth.

This encounter with Zevran only triggers after you've completed one of the main quests and acquired one set of allies. So . . . get yourself and your party leveled up as much as possible BEFORE completing one of the major quests. That is - do as many side quests and DLC's as possible.

That explains the ease with which I am able to complete the encounter. I generally go from lothering to ostagar then directly to warden's keep.

if i want to recruit him i go from lothering directly to circle tower..
ive done this battle with a wide aray of party set ups. But it basically all boils down to taking out the mage first..
after that i take care of the rest of the group with zev, and send one lone fighter or myself to go mop up the archers. Ive done the battle on all the lvls of difficulty, its really not as hard as you think. Just take out the mage first. Your best way to get the mage down is either a stun, paralisis, glyph, or even a couple of high damage spells.
if my opening hold spell or other spell that puts them on ice so to speak doest work,. I usally run my rouge to her to start anyway, use dirty fighting to stun her and by that point a couple of damage spells, or a follow up on attack by leliana finishes her up.
ill use a fighter to take on zevran normally, and then use 2 party memebers to take down the others quickly, targeting the same person, then the 4th member is on archer duty.
hope this made sence..
also you can use the elixer things, rock armor, or grounding, if you have wynne, use the heroic defence, or pick up paralisis glyph. if you have morigan she can freeze her, or hex. You can also open with cripple shot with lel, as someone else closes, like alister and use sheild bash or over power followed by assault..

I never had any problems in this battle. I'm mage with archer, healer and tank. My tactics was.
1. Kill the female mage with long range attacks.
- This is important part. (in all battles, take off the most damaging npc first or put hold with some spell)
Next depense little bit what powers my mage had.
2.a I cast earthquake + blizzard
2.b I just let them come and use cone of cold.
Rest is normal battle, did not notice anything hard in it.
