Hi,
So, NWN is quite mature now (I won't say old). I'm toying with the idea of putting together a new multiplayer module, with the eventual goal being to make it persistent. What I'd like to know is... Should I even bother with NWN1? Is it worth bothering with NWN2? What, if any, thoughts do you all have on "yet another" MP/PW module out there? Your tuppence worth of thoughts on anything else related is appreciated.
Cheers
swoods.
New MP/PW is it worth it?

It is old.
A true suggestion would be to find a server alread running and join thier Staff. I see about 40 servers or more listed. 10 of them have a base. I know that sounds harsh.
Though if you want to make something for the sake of making something then by all means make it.
I find the toolset a great outlet for my frustrations.
If you set out to make it because you want to make it then you will have fun.

Yeah, to be honest, those were my thoughts. It'd just be "nice" to make something that I can say is my own. I'm already a part of a big ish PW although there aren't as many active as there used to be.
I think I might just keep things to a bare minimum if I do anything. Just to see what I'm (in)capable of.

A PW takes A TON of work to create and manage. I'd suggest you go with a single player mod if you just want a fun side hobby that doesn't demand constant attention from you. If you're really aching to make a PW though, go for it. Or find a pre-established world you can build for and help out.
I wouldn't bother with NWN2 personally. Hard to build in, hard to play MP with, etc.

I'd say, if you have a vision, go for it. Start small and expand as you have the time. Make it a place you would enjoy playing in. If you can happily spend a few hours there a week, it doesn't really matter whether anyone else ever shows up or not IMHO.

Not to mention not entirely accurate.Jenna WSI wrote...

But it does have a heavy learning curve.

I certainly think it's worth it.
NWN will be around for a while.
It's free, after you purchase the software. Rare to see that in today's games.
It offers much of the same things you find in any other DnD flavored game, or WoW. The graphics may not be as great, but they aren't bad.
Personally, I think as long as there are RP'ers, NWN will have it's place. At least for a few more years.

Our PW, Markshire (www.markshire.com), jumped in to being about 2-3 years before NWN2 launched. Well into the game's life-cycle. We built up a solid playerbase and had hoped to make the jump to NWN2. That didn't pan out so now we've taken up the building blocks again and have started to assemble our ideas for Markshire 2 in NWN1.
What I've found since starting this process is that the community for NWN1 hasn't stopped building. There are HUGE improvements to the graphics/models/textures of tilesets. Many of which rival NWN2. Check out NWNCQ for starters. There are some amazing new custom content developments out there. Scripters have taken advantage of all that 1.69 (the final patch) has to offer which was significant.
So while some servers have died off, others continue the efforts to make NWN1 their home. Our original server, Markshire 1 (see my signature) continues to see use. I know there are new servers coming online frequently ... see the latest on the Vault .... New Gameworlds.
In my opinion, NWN1 is far from dead. Like Diablo and Baldur's Gate before it, NWN1 will continue to enjoy a long life ... as long as BW and Atari let us.

Dude if you have to buy 10 copied of diamond and give them to people its worth it. if you have quests and ideas to entertain people you must exspress it.
Go.. go and do. stop being a sissy. Get to work.

Certainly, if you are someone who gets joy out of simply creating... then get working on it.
The worst thing you can do is not try IMO. Regardless of which game you pick.

Thank you all for your replies,
I think I'll give it a go. maybe some of you will have a bash at playtesting once I've built a few areas?!
Cheers

I've been running my own world for about a year now, and before that I was hosting someone else's world on my pc. I have to say, that it can be quite rewarding once you have a community. There can be drama between players, and there can be difficulties when someone doesn't listen to the DM. But on the whole it has been a tremendous learning and creative experience for me.

Personally, you can do some amazing things with NWN2 area-wise (see the link within that thread) but even as much as the graphics are "modern", trying out the NWN1 toolset after being used to NWN2...I was blown away. NWN1 is definitely superior, as far as buildings go, unless you care more about landscape shape than anything. NWN2 is incredibly slow, buggy, and has a tiny playerbase. NWN1's the way to go.

I agree with PeeTeeEm, NWN1 is superior to NWN2 in almost every way.
Though if you really want to start your own server....It is very hard.
The thing I mostly came across with is that everyone tries to build their own module but have no clue on how to do it (I was one of those people I must admit)
So the only advice I can give you is to join a community first, becoming one of the community's staff for a little while and practise on your own module.
But its your choise of course, in any case I hope it is gonna work for you

I would have to say that it is fun building. Its hard work but very very rewarding. It has an excellent tools for create conversations, story, and so on. I would suggest to create a mod and then upload it. I myself and toying with using the toolset to create a comic using the comic book creator application and NWN1. But I am also looking to join a PW world. I agree with the above statements. Join a PW world and offer to assist. That way you can get your feet wet. There are other excellent applications and resources that will assist. I use that add on script creator (cant recall the name offhand) that you can create excellent scripts with no scripting experience.
I have just installed NWN1 again after a few years of abscense ready to get back in. If you know of any PW that is needed players and builders /scriptors please PM me.
Tks

I know I have been building in the toolset more than I have ever really played. Just for a hand full of friends, not much else. Over the years I have produced two failed projects which never saw the light of day [aside from weekend tests] because I had to step away for long periods. Real life can get in the way.
Currently, I'm the sole builder, scripter, historian, "name inventor", for my 3rd little PW. It is a LOT of hard work, but work I will gladly pull my hair out for. I really don't know what it is that drives me to do it. lol. I'm sure other PWs (including mine) could use help, even in the smallest form. But, there is nothing wrong with creating your own. The more the merrier and diverse.

Trying to start a new PW server at this stage in NWN's life cycle would be a waste of time in my experience. I hammered away at that for years and never saw anything for my trouble and I had some pretty good stuff going. (http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=1308)
Joining a server which already has a player base would likely be far more productive. I'm doing Arena type stuff now myself, as the demand is much greater than for PWs. I've seen more action in a few months of having a Team server up than I did in years of running PW stuff. (http://anphilliasdar....proboards.com/)
Hey yeah, make a new arena-type server. The ones up right now all suck, and it's a FAR more practical a goal in every way. Or better yet, do what all the cool kids do and snag something good from the vault and customize it to your liking.

well Arena server are not very interesting since those are only for players who want to PVP, Well joining a server and joining their staff is by far the best idea to start out.
As Arena's might gather large PVP groups, Roleplay servers are really more interesting since it creates plots and player plots people and DM's need to work with, it requires a bit more then just simple hack 'N slash and in all honesty it is tough to get players for your new world/server. It might take years or it will never come that players will join in to play. But that is how the dice roll.
In any case, if you decide to join a community then you might want to consider helping us out, we are always looking for people in either staff or players.
but I leave that choice entirely up to you.
I hope you will find what you are looking for

Valid comments all.
I found the NWN2 toolset to be one of the steepest learning curves (its nothing short of a nightmare IMO). Having said that, I'm very much a novice builder (read: none or very little experience) in the original toolset, hence why I've declined (as politely as possible I hope) assisting anyone with their building. The last thing I want to do is produce something so mediocre/ poor that it ruins people's fun.
As Dark Defiance states, RL has been and is a constant bugbear, so I doubt I'd ever get to the point of building something along the lines of where I currently play (Avlis).
Having said that... I do plan on having a go and seeing if I can get ~something~ done. Just to see if I can do it. Probably just a small mod, nohing major. This all depends on time, which as we all know, there isn't enough of!

We have a fledgling new server that has been in development for a VERY long time and now is in beta!
We would love to host any new RPG groups or dungeon adventurers that would be willing to put up with "beta" reporting as they go. We would also like to extend an invitation to all players, DMs, and developers that are looking for a world that they can have the freedom to build to their own needs and still remain part of a dedicated fun NWN community.
Check out our project here: http://social.biowar...m/project/3376/
and our website here: www.empiresofthesands.com
If you're interested E-mail me at Zhurrie@empiresofthesands.com or just do the registration process on the website. Due to massive spammer effort on our website you need to read follow the registration instructions as if your not a computer to get registered. {smilie}
