I'm having an utter failure in CC-land, and got a pro who's going to give me some help out of the goodness of her heart, but while I'm waiting, I was thinking of toolsetting up some exteriors as a consolation, since that's something I know I can do....

1.  Anybody using the prefabs in their worlds?
2.  I've noticed a couple places lately starting to make bigger exteriors without problems.  Getting common enough to paint on the bigger canvas and still be useful, or is it still "squeeze max space out of the smaller maps" where most of y'all are concerned?

I have used a couple of prefabs (generic chapel, and forgotten village) so far, but I am pretty picky in what I use. There are many very nice ones done though. I have a few others a may be adding.

I also have several large areas. They for the most part work well, but they are not without issues.

- A large amount of spawns on a large area is really not the best idea. I had to create workarounds to make this feel right but not have all the spawns in at once.

- Large areas with a huge amount of detail can also slow down. In some areas (forest) I have to limit the shadows from the moon/sun to improve performance. (I can argue this adjustment also by saying that in a dense forest there might not be any direct sunlight reaching the ground (though I live in a desert so what do I know, cloudy days = no shadows for me).

- I still however try to get the most out of each area. I try to have serveral caves, dungeons and other interior areas attached to give them more exploring/adventuring meat for their buck.

Yes, in my Northern Cormyr campaign, I'm using pre-fabs extensively. That's what they're there for.

Now, I have yet to use an area that hasn't required a good 5+ hours of tweaking to satisfy the OCD, but they save a lot of time.

Very seldom. We have about three small cave-like maps in our PW out of 56 areas and one house but that's it. I've looked through all the area prefabs before and it's hard to find something that provides a feeling of continuity and fits the theme of the PW.

Makes sense -- I'm thinking of doing a High Forest or Anauroch multi-map, for that connectivity.

Yes in most cases I find that I would have to build an area to connect to the prefab I wish to use. Interiors are easy to add in, but the exteriors in many cases all have different feels and need something to lead into them.

You never know though. I always try to check them out, Even if only a few work for you, that can still save many hours of work.
