My Hawkes Super-Chantry would be 100% more awesome and 100% less terrible than the current chantry.

"Magic is awesome, everyone should learn it even if they cannot practice it!" would be the first command. My chantry would teach children all kinds of practical things, such as how to swing a sword, make healing poultices and curative medicines, seduce qunari women, the basics underlying magic, etc.

^^I lol'd.

I'm really hoping to destroy the Chantry in DA2  They annoy me, especially the Templars at the Circle of Magi. When I play a mage I just want to slap Greagoir across the face ;)

Why destroy religions in a video game world where it is meaningless, play the game of life destroy religions in the real world where it will matter and allow the species room to evolve. It all depends on your viewpoint, for me destroying religion would be the righteous path and all who oppose me would be evil or at the least misguided by evil people. It is all a matter of perspective. In the end it is just a product like political parties, toothpaste, automobiles. Unless someone from the chantry got in my way as i was doing my thing i think the best fate for the chantry is just to ignore it until THEY leave you no choice, then scorched earth. Like the Krogan who's worst insult is "your not worth killing" religion is outdated, archaic and not worth my time. To expend any effort to fight the chantry is to place value on it, to acknowledge it's importance, to lend creedence to it's existence by the level of effort you expend, as such you value it by fighting it. Why bother until left with no choice then you can claim the high road and destroy it. If you had minded your own bussiness stayed out of my way, pretty much just left me alone, i would not have had to slaughter the faithful and burn your churches to the ground. SUCH IS THE FATE OF ALL WHO OPPOSE ME!

I dislike how the OP makes it seem as though the destruction of an incredibly powerful religion/theocracy is something that a player would take part in if he or she was going down the "evil" path. Why can't bringing an end to the Chantry be seen, by the player, as a benevolent act and a liberation of the people of Thedas? After all, there is no greater "evil" than religion.

The Maker is dead.

Well, the game does let you go after him verbally for how he was "handling" the Uldred situation.

That's why there's no morality bar!

There should be no morality bars in video games, period. It's a damn shame that so many WRPGs continue to use "Good vs. Evil" systems when developers should have matured beyond that by now. Dragon Age was a step in the right direction for BioWare, so I'm hoping they continue along this path and never develop a game with a morality meter (Aside from Mass Effect 3, because it's already an established part of that franchise) that grossly simplifies the concepts of "right and wrong" in the future. After all, if most choices in a game boil down to "good vs. evil" or "nice vs. mean," then I'd rather not that game have choices in the first place.

Well, consider that in this setting, the Chantry isn't just a belief system--it has political power.  I think many people who want to play "anti-Chantry" would like to undermine that power rather than actually burn down buildings and kill people.

True enough but you gotta admit my way would be more entertaining. Image IPB

That's because my mind was set on Evil at that moment. We have lives, issues. See?

But I understand your point.

I do apologize for that. It went overboard and I'm sorry for that. But the main idea was about going anti-Chantry. Not necessarely going Evil. I goofed off too much about it.

After that mess yesterday with the French article I needed a laugh and this thread gave it to me. Thanks for lulz, mate, they made the weekend a little more cheerful.

it was interpreted to mean there'd be no toolset or top down camera like in DA:O on the pc.

Evilness of the religions is relative.

I dislike the Chantry in DA, but I belive that the faith itself could give shelter to the refugees, etc.

Destroying the Chantry is simply impossible. It has way too big influence on the world of Thedas.

Just think of the army of the Templars. They are representing some real strenght. The only way to destroy the Chantry, would be to gather an army or free the Circle and persuade them to aid you in the battle (Don't forget the trained Templars here). Even if you win, you would have to deal with the belivers. An intresting idea anyway. :D

What? But I don't understand. DA:O was supposed to be morally disturbing in the first place because they promised it to be dark. Instead, what we have is pretentiously dark only.

Why do we need an "evil" cult to bring down the Chantry?

I want to see Hawke join the United Atheist League.
