We're not bashing real-life religion. Where did you read that. It wasn't meant to be a serious debate after all.

From a theological point of view, the only similarity between the Chantry and Catholicism is monotheism. Beyond that, the whole idea about "God" and how he interacts with the world is wildly different.

This is most likely deliberate. There may or may not be a Maker. He remains distant, and it is unclear if or how much he interferes in the natural order or the affairs of Man. If there is a Maker, there is still no way to determine whether or not the Chantry reflects his will. As long as that ambivalence remains, any approach toward the Maker or the Chantry is defensible.

@Tantum Dic Verbo: I agree with similiarity part. The Chantry and Modern Day catholicism similiartiy ends at monothiesm. However Medieval Catholic Church? More than likely a lot. Just don't bash Modern Day Catholicism, some of us are not extermist.

Destroying the Chantry is simply impossible. It has way too big influence on the world of Thedas.

I don't think most people believe the Chantry could be rendered completely irrelevant within the lifespans of our PCs.  However, that doesn't mean the influence it has on politics couldn't be weakened by those who are inclined to do so (if the game lets us, of course).

Well, regardless of the cold, hard fact if it is true.... we, as the viewer/player, should keep real world worldviews out of our fiction.

Easier said than done.  For example, I as a real life person strongly dislike wangst.  Therefore when I play video games, I strongly dislike wangsty characters, even in role-playing games where I'm playing characters I KNOW are different from myself.  I do a good job of separating player vs. character knowledge, but it's harder to separate player vs. character FEELINGS and preferences.

Easier said than done, indeed.  On top of that, I wouldn't be quick to argue that keeping our real-life views out of roleplaying is desirable.  They certainly shouldn't be kept out of fiction--good fiction usually does have something to say about real life.

Ninja'd :(
(Sorry for going off-topic)

OP: I would like being given the choice to adopt a more antagonistic stance on Chantry matters in DAO2. One thing that often bugged me in DAO:O was that the most recurrent, hostile action one could take when one was in disagreement with priests and the like was to remain silent.

@Illborne: Okay after reading the first paragraph I say f@#! no to anti-semitism.

Also I would be up for it. The more Rping options for the player the merrier. I mean it is strange that my elven warrior couldn't debat with Chantry priests about Maker Theory vs. Elven Gods (Forgot what they are called) Theory. Or argued with Leliana. Although it would end with her going awa on me.

Uh, people keep mentioning "Martin Luther," so I assumed they meant the German priest, not American civil rights leader MLK.

Can I bash certain political wings of Modern Day Catholicism or actions endorsed by the papacy towards third world countries?

Back to pitting Hawke against the Chantry (because folks had to get their panties in a bunch and go off the wall on what had been a ton of fun, for this misfit at least), the fact a former companion (Varric) is being questioned by a Chantry Inquisitor suggests the relationship is less then friendly. I wouldn't be surprised if opposing the Chantry will be part of the main quest/story for the game. Which would be lame of course, but Bioware wants this to be a more narrative driven story from what i understand so much of it is going to be written. I get the feeling our decisions will amount to how we complete story objective x,y,z (good, bad, neutral). not a bad thing per se as Origin did the same thing.

For the same reason it was lame I couldn't just off both Harrowmount and Bhelen and stick the Legion of the Dead as rulers of Orzammar (or that one noble you help out by proving their ancestry). My character won't get the 360 degrees of freedom he wants.

I'm not saying it won't be fun or well done, I'm just saying I'm going to dislike not having that option.

Yes, because every Dwarf in Orzammar would happily let some unknown dwarf or the Legion of the de- NO.

This is just stupid.

Ah but I am an unscrupulous blood mage with an even more conniving psychotic woman by my side. We'd crack her eventually. :)
