I purchased a new 360 and transferred the ME1 and ME2 game and importer folders using a flash drive. I cannot load ME1 games anymore from the new machines hard drive. I can load ME1 saves from the flash drive I used for the transfer even though no ME1 folder exists. Clearly there is some hidden file somewhere. How do I get it transferred?

I'm not 100% sure what you're doing but here is what I did with my new XBox.
1) Start the Xbox with the flash drive plugged in
2) Copy (not transfer; there is a difference) the ME1 save files from the flash drive to the hard drive.
3) Shut down the 360
4) Yank the flash drive
5) Start up the 360 and log onto your gamer profile attached to the ME1 save file. If the gamer profile isn't on the hard drive you can recover it.
6) Pop ME1 in and load the ME1 save file (preferably you want a save close to the end.)
7) Beat ME1, and this will create a hidden game complete save file.
8) Pop in ME2 and import the ME1 end-game save file you just created.

That should cover everything. If that doesn't help you're going to have to get more specific as far as what you're trying to do.

It is the hidden file that seems to be stuck on the usb. I did a transfer from the old drive to the usb because I was lazy and then copied individual game folders to the new drive (a lot of the old stuff was junk). You mentioned something I had not thought of which is to open ME1 on the new machine. I have no ME1 save at all so I would have to replay the whole thing but maybe just creating a new game will download something from Bioware servers.

I don't know that you can transfer the hidden save file. I have not picked apart my memory to see if it can be located conventionally, but when going through my memory through the dashboard, I can see and manipulate character saves, but not the hidden saves. I wish I could because I have a ton of old characters I beat ME1 with that I neither remember the details of nor wish to continue playing (I've long since deleted the save games) and they are clogging up my character importer. :)

I doubt that something would magically download from Bioware servers (other than a system update), just from creating a new ME1 game. You'd have to play through to the end to get a hidden save file on your system if you no longer had any ME1 save files.

As long as you can import the character into ME2 from your flash drive, that shouldn't be a problem, though, right? You can always choose to save your ME2 save files on your hard drive or other memory device.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried examining the USB flash drive on a computer to "see" the hidden save?

On the PC the xbox directory looks like it contains backup type files, not individual game files. I also have not tried the transfer from the usb just copy. I'm concerned I'll lose everything. I may create ME2 imports for the paragon/renegade paths and then try the transfer. At least I would have something to fall back on.

You can transfer the hidden save file from HDD to USB and back. You need to do the Transfer option (not copy) in order to see it. If the hidden save file is on your USB drive, it will be under the Publisher Data category.

1) Go into the Memory section of system info
2) Locate your flash drive, highlight it, hit Y for options, and select Transfer.
3) Select the hard drive as your destination drive.
4) You will get a list of categories (Games, profiles, music, etc). You're looking for the category Publisher Data. That's where the "hidden" end-game save files reside.

I made a post about this about a month ago, but no one seemed to care. Go over that and you should get an idea of what to look for.

It's a good guide, should be stickied imo. But you might want to change the title to include that it can help people transfer hidden saves to a new xbox as well. That was what I had trouble with. I was incredibly lucky when I transferred content from my old xbox to my new slim. I was just lucky to find out on my own when I was close to giving up and let my old ME save files die.

So I can confirm that this is information is correct and it works fine. :)

No, I transfered a hidden save file from my HDD to a USB drive with another hidden save file on it and it combined them no problem rather than over write them.

It worked! That hidden file is selectable in the Publisher data folder. It was actually the only thing there so this 'feature' must not be used by most games.

Awesome! Glad you didn't lose your save data. That would have sucked.

Quick question: How many different careers did you have? I'm still looking for someone to answer my question from my guide. (Reproduced below for someone that is happening to read)

Are ALL your end-game saves grouped to one file or does it group them into files by character? All four of my saves were from the same Shepard that I kept New Game plussing.

For example, let’s say you beat ME1 first as a soldier. Then you later beat the game as an adept. When you start a transfer and go into Publisher Data do you just see...
____ Shepard - Lvl 50 Soldier
...or do you see...
____ Shepard - Lvl 50 Soldier
____ Shepard - Lvl 58 Adept.

Oh, so there was a question. Yes, all saves are shown as a single file. I've played three or four different Shepards (over 10 playthroughs) and only one of them is visible when transferring the publisher data. I don't remember which one I could see though.

All my saves were in one file as well. It appears to be named after the last completed game. I ended up with multiple soldier saves because I replayed the ending to see the different outcomes. I should have changed the name or appearance to indicate paragon or renegade because a couple play throughs I didn't focus on either path.
