Warrior, Rogue or Mage if you ask me. Take your pick.

Hardly helpful.

It's a matter of some debate. Some swear by dual weapon warriors, others will tell you that dual dagger assassin spec rogues are the best.

I suppose it's a question of what you want to do. Do you like being in the center of the melee? Consider a dual wield or two hand warrior. Prefer being on the side of the combat and exploiting vulnerable enemies? Grab a dual wield rogue with the assassin specialization. Want to stay away from the mess of bodies? An archer of either rogue or warrior can be solid, if tough to build correctly (check the wiki for tips). Mages... mages tend to blast things to bits rather than keep up a constant stream of damage, really.

I'm going to assume you are using the term "DPS" as a misnomer, because actual damage per second does not matter in this game; even on longer boss encounters, you are knocked to hell and back as melee anyway.

Thus, the more effective value is instant or burst damage, since most encounters are very short. In this case, dual wield with Dual-Weapon Sweep and Whirlwind is probably the best.

I'm currently playing a Strength based Rogue, dual wielding two longswords, and Dual Weapon Sweep and Whirlwind just about kills all regular enemies on its own.

I have not played a more traditional Rogue (e.g. Dex or Cunning), but regardless the Dual Weapon tree is present in both, allowing us to say that it is the tree and not the class that is responsible for the damage.

While Mage AoE would do more damage, it is much more unwieldy.

Mage IMO. Although I prefer to play a melee type character. I will say that one of my play through`s was a warrior archer and when I started awakening he was too powerful and very boring..

I think someone already said it though mage warrior rogue. Take your pick, they all can seem to become to overpowered.

That reminds me maybe I should get that mod that make nightmare harder...

2h warrior has the most consistent dps in the game due to indomitable, they also have very good burst damage in the form of mighty blow -> sunder. When not facing knockdowns / stuns, dual wield warriors pull ahead when engaging the enemy head on, and rogues are better with a little micro. Mages are best at burst damage, but have fairly lackluster sustained damage unless you chug mana pots and choose overlapping spells so as to always be casting something.

Play style affects the results as well.

In my experience the Mage has the highest burst damage and exhalent CC (crowd control) but this is offset by requiring a lot of micro management… same with the two handed warrior. An archer is more forgiving of being set and forgotten about, so be aware that a group made up of mages can drive you insane very quickly.

Right now I'm pretty impressed with my rogue archer. She started off slow but was a real terror by lvl 12. I picked up leathality as soon as possible, stealth and melée archery. Worked on the rest of the achery tree as needed and dropped points 2:1 dex/cun. I also picked up Felons Coat, Bards Dancing shoes, and other items that upped attack and ranged crit chance. I chose Duelist for the +10 to Attack and use Mages Eye. I'm not looking to tank my party, just mess with enemy as much as possible. Righ now I'm responsible for 47% of my party's damage, outranking my husbands warrior or any one of son's characters. :)

the best dps for Origins for me is Dual Wield Warrior and Dual Wield Rogue.

For Awakening dual wield warriors seems to suck because other builds get a significant buff. From what i've read in awakening 2h warriors and archers seem to kick the most butt. Dual wield rogues seem to do pretty good as well.

It is a tough call. I don't think any one class is the King of the Hill in DPS. Str 2 Hand, Str Dual Weld Warrior, Any Dual Weld Rogue, a hexing Primal Mage are probably the tops.

But the game is not about sustained DPS. Burst DPS and Crowd Control are much more effective.

You're kidding right? Dual wield (spirit) warriors in Awakening have the highest single target DPS by a large margin, and even their AoE dmg can be pretty stellar (Can't really do sustained AoE DPS, but have insane AoE burst with massacre).
Spirit warrior Dual wield DPS is amazing to start with, about on par with a DW rogue. BUT if you can get + 50% spirit damage (+ 10% from Dreamsever, 5% from spiral band, 15% from the spirit warrior talents, 15% from 3 amplification runes and 5% from bugged find vitals) and a pet mage casting vulnerability/affliction hexes, the damage gets ridiculous, practically double that of a DW rogue.

Spirit warrior can get up to around 80% crit rate (more if you have 2 bards both with song of courage - yes, 2 SoC will stack), and are the only class AFAIK that can hit 350% bonus crit damage. Momentum + Beyond the Veil also takes spirit warriors to exactly the attack speed cap (+50%)
Spirit Warriors can hit in excess of 1000 DPS single target. And I do mean DPS, not damage per hit.
They are insane and to be perfectly honest, grossly overpowered if built right. For instance, I soloed The Baroness on Nightmare in about 30 seconds. And that was without hexes or SoC/Mark of Death/Weak Points.

Some good theorycrafting about why they kick arse in this thread on gameFAQ's
http://www.gamefaqs....kening/54076408

However, all that being said, there's really no need to completely min/max in Awakening, it's stupid easy anyway. There's more to the game than DPS, utility is arguably as important. If you want a good mix of damage and utility then mage may be a better way to go. Arcane warrior for instance can get absolutely ridiculous defence stats happening and have a much easier time if you want to try soloing Nightmare. I doubt my spirit warrior could solo queen of the blackmarsh (not without using poultices anyway), an Arcane warrior can though.
