Hey everyone, I really wanted to start a SR character, but was unsure if  I should go infiltrator or soldier, as they both have their positives and negatives.

For Soldier: Adrenaline Rush is amazing, access to all weapons and different ammo powers could help in a variety of situations. Lots of health.

For Infiltrator: Cloak seems like it could be really useful, to either run away, reposition, or just sneak up on someone. Incinerate blast (aoe) is a good ability for stripping armor (when you encounter armor). When using the sniper you get an automatic time dilation.

So which did you all enjoy more for a SR character?

I've enjoyed both for the sniper rifle. I actually started a Soldier run specifically to use assault rifles, trying to break away from my addiction to the Widow. Unfortunately, I found the sniper rifle even easier to use with the Soldier and a bit more powerful as well. Haven't used the Assault Rifle much at all as a Soldier.

Still, I preferred Infiltrator more because I love my tech powers, love Incineration Blast. Also, Tactical Cloak became incredibly useful when I was doing mad dashes to pick up more ammo for my sniper rifle. Handy for the other reasons you listed as well. Also had the Locust to pick up the slack of not having the Assault Rifle.

I suspect you'll get people claiming superiority on both sides of the argument here. All comes down to your own personal preference here. My own? More fun with Infiltrator, easier with Soldier.

P.S. Check sig. Join the revolution.

For a "pure" sniper, I prefer the infiltrator. Tactical Cloak is a great power for a sniper, giving you a good damage boost, plus great tactical utility for setting up sniper shots without incoming bullets, as well as the ability to reposition for better sniping.

The soldier makes a great sniper, because it can have a larger damage boost, and AR gives a good slowdown for the SR, plus the soldier has access to more weapons and is useful in more situations.

The infiltrator is good at close range because the SMG is a good close-up weapon, especially the Tempest, but there's no beating the SG for in-your-face damage, plus the AR is a great short/medium range all purpose weapon, and can even be a great long range weapon if you use the Vindicator.

So, really, it's up to personal taste. I prefer the Infiltrator because of the tech powers and because Cloak just rocks, but the Soldier is just as viable as a sniper.

Soldiers can outdamage an Infiltrator, but that's about it. Infiltrator is basically the Sniper class while Soldiers are a "Jack of All Trades" when it comes to guns.

Yeah the personal taste is kind of the issue lol.

From a personal RP perspective, I would be drawn more to the infiltrator, not much of an "up-in-your-face" type of guy, and would prefer to be subtle.

But from a game perspective, I like the weapon variety and heightened adrenaline rush to use with all weapons.

That's why it's a difficult decision :( because I think they play rather similarly (once you have the widow) so don't think I could do both.

I played both and like infiltrator better. Sniping is sooooo much fun and I'm addicted to incinerate also.

Well, you can pick up the Assault Rifle or the Shotgun on the Collector Base, but that could be as far as 3/4ths into your game. As I'm not usually for close quarter combat, the Tactical Cloak is great for running away to snipe another day. :P

Also, the reason I couldn't play a Soldier in ME1 was that it just drove me crazy not to have tech powers available. Sure, armor piercing or disruptor does just as well for stripping defenses, but I like a good incineration blast or energy drain. Shooting all the time does get tiresome after awhile.

I personally preferred the soldier because the adrenaline rush can be used for more than just the sniper, and concussive shot knocks people away before they get close. The cloak is good for the damage increase but you can make up for that damage in multiple different ways. Plus althought the locust is pretty good, assault rifles are still better and are a useful alternative when you run out of sniper ammo.

Wonder if there's an assault rifle as good as a SMG for when you cloak right up behind an enemy, though. Aren't assault rifles really more effective at midrange? Though I suppose if you're pointing a gun right behind someone's head, realistically they should drop in one shot. Unless they're a krogan.

If you are using this for "against soldier" the answer would be shotgun.

But you are right, assault rifles are much better for medium range, because when you are right up against somebody an SMG will release a full spray right in the chest, which is a lot of damage. My Sentinel likes to do this sometimes, charge up with SMG and unload a full spray into people in between melee attacks.

I guess I should say that is another reason I was considering soldier instead of infiltrator, because my main class is a Sentinel so I already have the "casting" abilities.

But still undecided, watching youtube videos of both right now.

I don't think there is really going to be much of a difference. You're going to be doing massive damage with the widow with either class.

But I would probably go with infiltrator because I find it a lot more fun than I did the soldier.

If you are actually good at sniping in videogames and can consistently get headshots without any time dilation effects, I suggest Soldier.

If you do kinda need the time dilation, go with Infiltrator.

I'm starting to love the soldier and infiltrator classes...but I'm running an infiltrator and going to take the mantis/assassin cloak/assassin spec...... and it feels more natural to me....

Soldier. Tactical cloak is nice, but AR is better. The soldier can hold is ground. He doesn't need to escape and hide like the infiltrator. Has access to all the guns and all the ammo powers.

A really tough decision :(

You know you have made good classes when it's hard to decide which to play haha

Infiltrators can do it from behind. Take that, Soldiers.

Soldier, adrenaline rush is a combination of the Sniper time dilation and damage bonus without repercussions to your shields. After you finish your 10-12 rounds which happens quickly, you have Assault rifles and shotguns to toy with. Adrenaline rush can also be used to tactical positioning. And inferno ammo is as useful as incineration. :D

Oh and they're badass space cowboys.

It depends(to me) on how patient you are and how reliant on time dilation when sniping. If you're a very patient sniper, go soldier. You can use AR every 8 seconds(3 sec cooldown/5 sec power duration) and that one shot you fire during AR will be extremely powerful. I would also choose soldier if you're not very dependent on time dilation when sniping, and often shoot without it.

On the other hand if you're like me, shooting once every 8 seconds can get very boring.(my infiltrator playthroughs have gotten me too used to time dilation when sniping, I could get used to sniping without it, but I don't desire to) With the infiltrator, you can shoot immediately after reload and have a nice time dilation with every shot. I found that, when soley sniping, I clear out rooms faster when I'm playing an infiltrator becuase I dont have to wait for a cooldown to shoot. You can one-shot all standard mooks with the infiltrator, and when you encounter a heavy enemy, cloak is right there to give you a huge damage boost. Cloak's damage boost is nowhere near that of AR, but I have found it to be adequate enough to get the job done. And Cloak is a more fun power to use than AR, IMO. But I'm not trying to doubt how much of a monster of a power AR is.

All in all, it all boils down to the individual player. That's probably not the answer you wanted, but I tried to break it down as best I could. But if you can't make a decision from what you've read here, just create a soldier and an infiltrator and do some experimenting to figure out which you like best. This is how I ended up finding out why I prefer the infiltrator.

Edited for add-ins

I know I posted once before in this thread but thought of something else to add:

The main difference, in my opinion, lies in the skills Adrenaline Rush and Tactical Cloak.

Adrenaline Rush is a great skill, gives a great slowdown in or out of sniper zoom, but you still move at normal speed, giving a soldier a great "rushing" capability second only to the Vanguard's Charge. It's also great for lessening incoming damage if you take the right spec.

Tactical Cloak has, in my opinion, more tactical uses, including flanking, advancing to close range for up close combat, retreating if being rushed, not to mention the damage bonus. However, it does have the drawback of delaying health/shield regeneration until cloak is over, leaving you vulnerable after Cloak ends.

Adrenaline Rush doesn't have that drawback with health/shield regeneration. It doesn't work as often as the Infiltrator's sniper zoom slowdown, but that's easily worked around by switching to Assault Rifle after each sniper shot, then back to the SR for adrenaline rush/headshot.

The other abilities, like Incinerate, AI Hacking, Concussive Shot, are all nice, but don't really highlight the differences between the two classes like AR and TC do.

I say soldier because the real Commander Shepard doesn't need any fancy tricks like turnin invisible.... He just needs a wide selection of asskickery.

Lol.

I'm gonna try out infiltrator for a bit, I've gotten a soldier through most of the game but ended up deleting him because I was having a rough time playing full renegade (which is one reason for this thread, wanted a sniper, and enjoyed soldier, but wasn't sure if infiltrator would be better at it).

Oh, what would be a preferred infiltrator build?

Maybe:

XXXX Assassin's Cloak

XXXX Assassin/Agent (not sure which)

XXXX Incinerate

XXXX Warp Ammo(heavy or squad)

XXXX Disruptor Ammo (heavy or squad)

X AI Hacking

?
