Maybe this topic has been posted before but I had to say it for myself. While I enjoyed playing Mass Effect 2 and applaud Bioware for making it, the best thing I can say about it compared to the original  are the graphics.  The story,  the acting ,the music, the battles, the weapons and the exploration of planets were better and more fun in Mass Effect 1.  Even after playing ME1 for the fourth or fifth time listening to Vigil talk about the extinction of the Prothean race, dealing with Saren and Liara's mother and deciding to save the council still strike a deep emotional chord about the depth of the story and the characters.   ME1 was more like a game turned into a great movie you take part in while ME2 is more like a movie turned into a game(if that makes any sense).    There were more weapons, ammo types and unlimited ammo in ME1 and being a Vanguard was more fun. In ME2 when you finally get the choice to upgrade 1 weapon you can only upgrade the power and ammo count and after that its accuracy goes to hell(some upgrade). In ME1 exploring the planets was more fun and felt more like an open world to explore. In ME2  the battles and exploring planets felt more linear, like just following a path.  In ME2  Liara  (a major character and romance in ME1) was practically ignored almost cast aside(her new persona being a business woman). I know it's a game and I like Mass Effect 2 but I love Mass Effect 1.   I Hope Mass Effect 3 is more like the original with a really solid story and makes you feel great at the end just like ME1. I also hope I'm not the ony one who feels this way........

The guy who coded the search function on these boards must cry himself to sleep every night at the futility of having created it...

On topic, I happen to find both games complement the other. I understand what the creators were trying to do with ME2 and I enjoyed the character driven story. ME1 made you feel like there were options where there weren't (which if you played enough RPGs becomes really obvious and slightly maddening) and ME2 probably took the polishing of options a little too far creating a slightly linear feel if you're playing solely for the plot missions (if you're really into the character missions then it feels far less linear than ME1, which didn't feel very linear). A few criticisms aside, both are awesome games, I can't wait for ME3.

Watch the spoilers (I know, but still). Anyway I felt ME2 was a better game, and Vanguard was MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better in ME2. ;)

Story, Immersion, RPG Elements, exploring were better in ME1. "GUN"play, GFX were better in ME2. Why not put both togethe for ME3 and add more maybe?

Yeah ME1 was not at all linear.

Land on Therum, follow a track, find Liara, leave. oh wait...

Land on Noveria, follow a track, fight benezia, leave. oh wait...

Land on Feros, follow a track (twice), fight thorian, leave. oh wait...

Land on Virmire, follow a track, fight Saren, leave. oh wait...

Land on Ilos, follow a track, find the conduit, leave. oh wait...

Arrive on the Citadel, follow a track, fight Saren, leave. oh wait...

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I personally liked ME2 much more than ME1 but I'm hopeful that we'll see some things in ME3 we can all appreciate. Being the finale, we'll undoubtedly get a more epic central story. And with the success and praise lavished on overlord, I'm hopeful we'll see more level design like that, which should go some ways to satisfying your craving for exploration and openness.

My wish list is a little different than yours, though, so I think neither of us will get all of what we want but it should still be an awesome game.

ONE thing to do, was to make what you see on your workstations, consoles a bit more interesting, not so schematic as in TWO and dipped in orange-brown color. That would help a LOT.

Mass Effect 2 is superior to Mass Effect 1 in every way apart from the story.

I'll usually give a game a pass on the linearity if either the mission sequence selection or the mission contents are non-linear (it'd be awesome for both to be non-linear, but that can present issues if the game isn't purely sandbox).  Although, in the strictest sense both games are linear no matter how you look at it.  For example, "beating" ME1 means you have to kill red glowing frog Saren one on one (why can't I just blow up the whole Citadel to take out Sovereign...now THAT is a renegade option).  I'd throw something out there for ME2 non-linearity but this is the no spoiler forum.

While ME did have some good aspects, I enjoyed ME2 alot more, and this is a poor troll attempt.

The real experience is not at all bare as your post implies. The way you went about that would make any game sound boring.
