Jacob's the squad member who benefits most from Firepower DLC, IMHO

Jacob is probably my most used squadmate, and although the Geth SG works very well, I prefer the Eviserator as it packs more of a punch and has almost as good range. But the M5 pistol has become the weapon of choice, for when I want Jacob to shoot from a safer distance.

Personally I think TALI benefits the most from the Firepower DLC's Geth Shotgun. I've checked up on how the weapons are set up on the wikia. the Unshotgun compensates for Tali's squishiness at close-range by being a long-range buckshot. She can snipe with a shotgun again! =D

Also if any of you haven't before, recruit Grunt first sometime and bring him to recruit Mordin. He has a couple funny remarks.

Plus it is different depending on who you take (Zaeed or Jacob); same for the IFF run take Jacob and you get additional conversation @ the spiked altar. Grunts lines are just a hoot most of the time + he gets really excited killing enemies for you.
My recruitment order is; Zaeed, Kusumi (no effort), Kasumi's Loyality; Zaeed & Jacob to get Grunt; Grunt & Zaeed's Loyality; Grunt & Zaeed or Jacob to get Mordin, Garrus, Jack ...

I find Jacob useless to me.

As a Vanguard, I don't need his pull, I don't need his Incendiary Ammo(I have Inferno), I don't need his shotgun expertise, and I don't need his Barrier(since it only helps him).

The only squadmate I find more useless to me is Jack.

I pretty much only ever use Garrus, Tali, and Miranda. I branch out during the suicide mission, but that's due to circumstance.

Grunt and Legion for the Oculus, but only for the Widow/Claymore combination.

Jack is pretty much ignored all the way through, and Jacob is always assigned as the crew escort.

True, but various classes can make certain squadmates useless. On both an Adept and Sentinel, I find Jacob to be far more useful than say Grunt.

Shoot, Grunt is way better than Jacob to an adept. But if you want killing teams then take either Miranda and Kasumi or Miranda and Thane for an adept. Miranda/Kasumi do shield stripping well, and Thane/Miranda do unstable warp explosions galore. For collector missions take an adept add Miranda and Thane and warp bomb through the mission, doing warp explosions up to 3 every 10 seconds or so.

Grunt survives much better than Jacob, and you don't look for a pull to find it not there. Use area pull for 3 second cool downs and have your companions do the warp explosions using unstable for 9 second base cool downs before upgrades, which means by the time you rotate through all the explosions using area pull, then your companions are ready again.
