So I'm wondering something, I know that you cant be a Dwarf Mage when playing DA:O, but in the cutscene at the start, you do see several Dwarf Mages (presumably Grey Wardens). However, when you're in Orzammar, you speak to a girl named Dagna, and during the conversation she explains that Dwarves cant be Mages, that they are unable to "perform any level of spell casting, regardless of lyrium exposure or time on the surface".

This has me a little confused, so I'm just wondering if anyone knows for sure, is it unheard of, for Dwarfs to be Mages, or is it just extremely rare. Because what Dagna said, seems to contradict the intro cutscene to the game.

I don't remember the cutscene with the dwarven mages. As far as I know dwarves in the DA universe can't be mages, but I think Dagna is working hard to change that.

I don't remember seeing any Dwarven mages, either. One of the theories I heard in-game, or at least I'm sure I did, was that enough time on the surface would, over the course of generations, allow the Dwarves to cast magic.

It is hinted that dwarves may not be absolutely barred from magic. The fact that dwarves may be forced into the Fade (via Sloth Demon or the First's spell) and that surface dwarves lose resistance to lyrium may be evidence that dwarves may be able to do magic. Dwarves can also learn the Templar and Spirit Warrior specializations, which tap into what are arguably magical powers. Despite this, no dwarf mages are known and it is yet to be seen if they actually do exist.

That's from DA Wiki's Dwarf page, although I suspect Templar/Spirit Warrior are oversights or gameplay mechanics taking priority over story.

Hm, well they weren't actually using magic in the cutscene so perhaps they weren't mages then. I kind of assumed they were though, since they appeared to be dressed in robes, and holding mage staffs. But after seeing that the Assembly in Orzammar also dress this way, and have Staffs, I guess it's perhaps for show rather than actually being for spell casting. Cheers for the replies. :)

Sorry, no dwarf mages. Yes Dagna has a very strong interest in magic, but that doesn't make her a mage anymore than my interest in ballet would make me a ballerina.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that they could eventually be mages I reckon. After all, aren't genlock's basically darkspawn descended from dwarves? And they can use magic just fine.

That's been covered. Genlocks are not dwarves, and darkspawn magic is not the same as human or elf mage magic.

In Darkspawn Chronicles, the Genlock Emissary's magic is identical to elven/human. Why is an official Bioware DLC false in terms of lore?

That's a gameplay mechanic. I mean.. the spells and stuff would work the same, but the darkspawn do not draw their power from the Fade. The codex says it is "akin to blood magic," which most likely means it is drawn from the taint, like Avernus' potion abilities.  In fact, I'm fairly sure that the 'magic from the taint' idea is confirmed in Dragon Age: The Calling.

Well, there's always the "Rune Magic" route. Dwarves can't cast spells, but they can manipulate acrane energies using specially crafted objects. DA:O doesn't touch on the concept very much, but it's one I'd love to see expanded on.

Doesn't that mean Dwarves shouldn't be able to do enchanting? How does Sandal do it?

Enchanting and using runes involves folding processed lyrium into weapons. This is done, primarily, by dwarves and the tranquil, meaning it does not require a connection to the fade. Lyrium is a natural substance, a mineral, found in the environment. Anybody can find it, touch it, mess with it, though its raw form would most likely cause debilitating side effects, if not death, to anyone but dwarves. In fact, Sandal's prolonged experience to lyrium may account for his perceived lack of mental development.

According to Awakening, anybody can create runes, as they introduced the openly available skill rune crafting. The runes are simply symbols, usually ancient, that represent certain things and are believed to direct power. A dwarf, such as Sandal, would presumably carve these runes onto the weapon and fold lyrium into the carvings, or something to that extent. In short, no magical aptitude is required for enchanting; in fact, the opposite is true-- only those without magical aptitude can fold lyrium.

So for a Dwarf to work with the arcane/enchantment - you have to drop it on its head multiple times as a baby? :o

Tranquil mages are able to do rune enchantment, but not magic.

Mages are able to do magic, but not rune enchantment.

Dwarves are able to do rune enchantment, but not magic.

Dwarves lose their ability to do rune enchantment or better said their immunity towards lyrium poisoning when they live on the surface.

So in theory it would not be strange to think that in time surface dwarves who are unable to work with lyrium anymore would be able to learn magic and get a connection with the fade.

I think you're absolutely correct.  Thanks.  I hate to say it, but a butterfly is not really the brightest bug in the bunch, and sometimes it takes awhile for things to register.

Cheers.
