I'd like the loot chests to provide more consistent rewards. how many times have we run across a chest we can't open yet because our sill isnt high enough, returned when it was maxed and opened the chest only to find a frost rock or something.. If its a high level chest, why not make it a decent reward?

Well said.

I don't want gobs of high value loot in every chest, but I like occasional nice random loot in a high skill chest.

The whole point of hack n slash games and MMOs is loot. BioWare focuses their budget on other things

Nope, the whole point of MMOs and Hack and Loot games are QUESTS/Battle.  The loot comes afterwards as a reward.

Risk - Reward Balance = good MMO/Hack and Slash

True reward of RPG is Never loot. its XP. Tougher battle = more XP

Fable is a great example of a game w/ crappy loot. Nothing is more deflating than spending 1 hour opening a demon door and the "reward" being a "funny hat" or "Mana potion"

Fable I and 2 are probably the worst balanced "RPGs" of this generation.

Granted I have both Fable games and the third on pre-order, I totally agree. There wasn't anything worthwhile behind those doors, outside if getting a spouse and putting them in the house behind one...

Loot was average on DA:O. I don't question the quantity but the quality of it. Less loot but more meaningfull loot, especially boss drops that were depressing in DA:O. I remember the delusion after killing the dragon in the sacred ashes quest. He has got only garbage. The dwarf in my camp has better items. I should have killed him instead of the Dragon :D.

I loved dragon age but the one thing that i felt it was always missing was loot variety. Seriously to me the most interesting thing in rpg's is getting that new magic item, you know like in diablo 2 for example loot galore and that kept it interesting. Or world of warcraft it's all about the loot !!! my father also played and beat the game he loved it as well but he also said he really did not like that. I love bioware they are my favorite game developer but i believe this is one thing they really need to look into!!!

Thanks for reading :)

I also like getting that new magical item. I like lots of loot, as well. I do wish they would make us 'go off the beaten path' and work hard to find the best items. For instance, I liked the amount of work required in Leliana's and Sten's personal quests to get their items.
As some have said that really good loot should be in those most difficult to open chests. I prefer that low level enemies give gold in place of insignificant items.
I seriously refuse to put flame runes on my weapons becasue it looked silly running around with flames shooting up my back.Posted Image The cold runes added a nice effect though.
And I know we're not talking Awakening here, but rune-crafting can die a slow and painful death as far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: I liked getting loot that had some special meaning like Adaia's boots, Family Sword, Duncan's shield, etc.

It is frustrating for me that some items are left out of the game, ie Ceremonial Gloves, Elven boots, Blackblade Armor. Sure if you have the PC version you can mod them in, but if you play on the console, you're out of luck.

The backpack limit totally invalidated the junk spam loot system of DAO.

Bioware's counter is that it "balanced" the game. But players counter that, you filled up the world w/ space eating junk loot. It doesn't balance anything, it just made looting annoying and time consuming.

Lot of rage regardless, not objective.

When i wrote this, i had no rage or whatever in mind. It's just what i would dislike if they change the current system to the mentioned level.
You can agree or disagree with me, it's just my opinion and opinions are rarely objective.

Haexpane, you should have played an IE game. Before you get a couple bags of holding BG was way worse than DAO

Well, i can't remember a single person that was moaning about too much *junk* loot back in the old days where Might and Magic, Ultima and Realms of Arkania were in the top of the charts. It was just a part of the game's micromanagement and still is in a lot of modern day RPG's.
On the other hand magical loot in Realms of Arkania was extremely rare, and only 1 magical weapon of every type existed in the first 2 games.

But i agree that locked chests loot and quest rewards could be bit a more *unique* than what you can find on the burglar's chieftain and his minions around the corner.
One funny thing about Awakening is, that you can finish it with Wade's Dragonbone Platemail without ever getting into trouble or the need of getting a better Armor. Ahh well, i guess it's all about the looks, shiny precious itemssssss...

There is a difference between magical and truly epic items and people are confusing the two. Magical items are superior to ordinary items given their craftsmanship and attributes and there may be some lore blurb behind them.

Epic items are in a sense, similar, but on a grander scale, though this does not necessarily mean that they are significantly better ingame. Seeing as balance and difficulty are all over the place, it is hardly a surprise. As far as I know, the only sword that deserves to be called "epic" is Vigilance, unlike other swords, it has its own epilogue entry. The rest of the weapons merely belonged to powerful/renowned individuals or were created by lost arts, but they are minor legends. An epic weapon would be the equivalent of Soul Edge in Soul Calibur, while the other magical weapons would simply be the weapons wielded by other SC heroes.

I thought the loot was decent in Dragon Age, I'd rather not see more than a few "epic" weapons and armor (Vigilance, Keening Blade, Fade Wall, Wade's armors and and weapons + a few more were just the appropiate amount).

I'd just like to see alot more types of armor and a bigger variety of skins of the armors, I mean light to plate armor had a total of like 7 skins combined, then they were just re-colored.

As long as they don't have "Spiked armor of the spike with +7 to spikeyness" then I'll be happy.

Edit: Well . . . if it's Porcupine armor then I guess I could make an exception.

gotta protect those achilles shoulders guys.

I lol'd... pretty hard.

I always wondered why the arms (mainly the part where our biceps would be) are sooo skinny. It always struck me as off, and how the hell would we slip into it anyway?

You don't "slip into" armor. It's strapped on. Like kneepads, elbowpads, helmets, ect.

Cailan does have some ridiculous shoulder-pads though.

Maybe it's just me, but when there are *too* many choices of uber armor or weapons it upsets me. I guess I'm just a perfectionist, but it drives me batty when it's not clear what the best item for a situation is. Like EQ in the beginning had a few different armor choices and it was pretty clear which was going to be best for your char. After a few years of just adding and adding different types of arms and armor the choices became overwhelming and un-fun. Yes, I am a weird perfectionist that way.

That said, I thought the variety of choices in DAO was very appropriate. There was a lot of flexibility in choosing among the armor weights, and the available weapons had enough variety among different stats to make different play throughs interesting to me.

Of course, more armor and staff textures would be nifty, and I am wholeheartedly in favor of making lock difficulty scale with reward quality. I can't believe I dragged Leliana all the way up the empty mage tower for a couple potions and a frostrock.

I liked the way nwn2 handled loot. There was so much loot, but the good things where always a couple of hours apart so you didn't end up finding a better weapon/armor around every corner. I thought both ME2 and Dragon age origins lacked good loot. ME2 had like (or 2) upgrades for each weapon class and in dragon age i stuck with pretty much the same weapons and the blood dragon armor through 70-85% of the campaign.
