The whole point of hack n slash games and MMOs is loot. BioWare focuses their budget on other things

Nope, the whole point of MMOs and Hack and Loot games are QUESTS/Battle.  The loot comes afterwards as a reward.

Risk - Reward Balance = good MMO/Hack and Slash

True reward of RPG is Never loot. its XP. Tougher battle = more XP

The fun of an RPG lies in the roleplaying. Loot is only needed if it is in some way important to the character.

For example, if you happen to play as a treasure-hunter, you obviously need lots of loot.

If you play as a Warden, not so much....

Loot can be made more meaningful with the concept of item or weapon crafting, or special armor sets. Providing lots of loot, without making looting a requirement, is a nice option.

Are you serious? There's too many overpowered items in DA:O, it got even more ridiculous in Awakening. Bring back the days of BG1, where having a +1 sword was something that could last you until the end.

my only problem with the loot was opening a locked chest to find a grey iron dagger in it, which was less valuable than the grey iron greatsword I just got off the weapons rack. Locked chests I think should have some sort of monetary items, potions, or the like.

I would like to throw out the trash items like blank scrolls and pelts unless they can be used in something.  Leave gold and gems in chest or a quest item for thieves.

Boss and up creatures should have something on them beside some bland chainmail boots.  Why spend so long killing the darn thing for something i can buy for 30 silver at the store?

Loots shouldn't be random, there shouldn't be multiple copies of unique items that are obtainable from different places/people. Im looking at you, Frenzy.

 Doesn't that lead to redundency?

Not entirely true (but true nonetheless). Yusaris, juggernaut.

I loved Ageless, but it was due to its description. Its a placebo weapon, to frighten the opponent, but in principle useless.

sorryerwise it wasn't the best weapon. but if im playing warrior i often have 2 2H warriors with me and in that case its better for the other warrior to use the weapon (yusaris) with runes, because i almost only use abbilitys with my main char, rarely using normal strikes...

The best thing to do would be like in Fallout 3 where you must embark on long quests for the best armor

People can't even agree on what makes an RPG, much less where the fun lies.

I don't pretend I'm Hawke or Shepard, just like I don't pretend I'm Don Draper when I watch Mad Men.  And I get a lot of fun out of Mad Men and Mass Effect/DAO.

The fun for me is in the gameplay + story + art, not in strict role playing.  I would argue 99% of the people who bought those games are also in it for the gameplay.

Well DAO isn't balanced very well, so it's not that the weapons are over powered, the scaling is broken.

You are almost as powerful even when you have to wear Darkspawn/ or Chainmail in the Jail section in Awakenings.  This is a great spot that demonstrates how the balance is broken, even w/ crap weapons you are never really in much danger.

Not only can you, but you HAVE NO CHOICE sometimes.  Bioware did it for their version of balance.  You have to choose how to spend your gold wiseley.  But IMO that takes away from the game as the pressure of collecting trash loot to sell to the vendor is anti-fun.

I'd rather kill stuff for loot.  Killing stuff for inventory space hogging items that I have to trudge back to a vendor and dump for a few sheckles IMO Is not good balance.  It just makes me want to forget doing it.

So I am forced to make a decision, penny pinch and spend a ton of time looking at loading screens and vendor inventory in order to buy a nice item?  Or just plow through the game w/ mediocre gear.

I prefer a system that rewards exploration, combat, and quests.  Not junk resale.

Or any decent MMO for that matter, yes.  Want the best armor?  Work for it.

In DAO or DAO Awakenings, the best armor is either 1 hour long DLC or bought off a vendor... not exciting.

tell this to the guy who locked his favorite dagger he got from his parents away because it was more important to him than a huge sword

seriously people, just because something is in a chest it doesnt have to be better, what the game lacks is not loot but mimics

or just give some china farmer 15€ so he gives you money with which you can also buy great gear. and working for an armor is actually also getting the money to buy it.

I could do with less loot as well, especially trash loot. That rusty old darkspawn dagger that is completely useless for example. Many games nowadays go the way to replace this trash collector loot with money loot, which is a good thing.

I think BioWare got armor drops correctly: Juggernaut, Legion of the Dead, Cailan's Armor, etc. were all laid out in their own respective dungeons. While Legion of the Dead wasn't so great, the other two are among the best Massive Armors in the game.

Just about everything else is purchased, though. As long as they fix that, then everything will be fine.

so Bioware got the "armor drops" correcly because circa half the useful ones were in DLC?

I always thought that if my dwarf wore any massive armour other than dwarven armour it would look ridiculous, the shoulder things were bigger than his head. Also chests annoying, i was forced to bring a rouge around with me for every mission just so i could get a cheap weapon or a spirit balm
