@herr uhl: Well..good point.

I want to ask a question as well: What do qunari do if a mage runs away?

How are "qunari mages" treated on a regular basis? I understand that they are leashed and have their tongues removed, but is this something done more or less out of "malice" or is there perhaps a deeper, profound explanation that better justifies the practice?

..... Send Qunari templars after them? I would be suprised if QUnari don't have something similar for mage pwnage.

How would they find them? Do they use the same phylcacteracy as the Chantry? Or do they use a different system?

1) I thought Qunari mages only get their tongues cut out if they practice "forbidden magic" (the Qunari definition of which is currently unknown)
2) I think their opposition of magic stems from their constant conflicts with the Tevinter Imperium. 'Nuff said?

i guess the qun'ari realize that for mages, words are power in which their spells are greatly heightned when accompanied by a chant, removing the tongue might be a pratical way to ensure that mages can't use magic too powerful for their own good. but i also might be completely wrong.

The Qunari scare me sometimes :(

Only sometimes? That is insufficient. You will report to a re-education center immediately for questioning by the Ben-Hassrath.

Darth Gaider has spoken.
Etc. to all of the above.

This has been more or less what I had expected. Good stuff, and glad to hear it from the idea man himself.

I'm wondering why mages have their tongues cut out. DA mages don't seem to require incantations to work spells, so not being able to speak wouldn't seem to be a deterrent to rogue magic.

Some of them might... I seem to recall Avernus chanting some gibberish while summoning demons.

It doesn't stop them from doing magic. It stops a mage who has been possessed by a demon from communicating and possibly corrupting someone else, as Uldred did.

@ 1. I should have specified, but I wasn't speaking in general terms. In any case, I am looking for some insight into the "forbidden" aspect of their magic.

@ 2. I wasn't aware that the qunari outright oppose magic. I'll have to admit that I'm not as "aware" of qunari lore as I probably should be at this point.

Edit: (cough) It's probably about time that I replay the game. Again.

Yeah but Templars keep them on leashes as well, what's the difference between both?

The qunari mages are literally kept on leashes, held by an arvaarad (their "handler", if you will). The templars only keep mages on figurative leashes.

Do the Qunari allow the Mages to practice and hone their abilities and give them positions where their powers will be useful, or shun the use of magic and just give them simple menial tasks like chef / bard?

I think it would be better to think of qunari mages as trained attack dogs.

And if they DO use magic, do they allow it for fighting purposes and allow the Female Qunari to fight with their talents (If they can be mages)?

A female qunari who is a mage is no longer female. She is saarebas-- a "dangerous thing", not even a person really. So, yes, female qunari do fight with their magic, but they're considered part of the arvaarad the same way a sword would be part of the warrior.

I've been wondering for a while, what kind of magic is considered forbidden?

Gonna go out on a limb and guess forbidden magic is anything you do without being commanded to by your handler.

I would think blood magic since it is from demons.

But they do put mages on leashes, right?

This would be the correct answer. The Qunari view saarebas as if they were poisonous snakes. They keep them around: You need a snake's venom to make antivenom, and you need mages to fight magic. But they never believe for a second that the saarebas are anything but a threat to themselves and to innocent people.

also out of curiosity, what is a qun'ari city like? is it much like a human city or more like fortresses or settlements, do they have a preference on location?

Forbidden magic example:

Qunari Mage Handler: (Throws a stick into the bushes 2 km away) Moi'slaven Fetch!

Moi'slaven the Mage: (Tries to use Telikinesis)

Qunari Mage Handler: BAD DOG! BAD DOG! (Beats him up, cuts his tongue off). Now try again! I will give you that piece of steak we specially allowed to go bad for you, if you do better!

Moi'slaven the Mage: (Runs off and returns in 2 hours with the stick).

Qunari Mage Handler: Good boy! What a good boy you are! Here, Gnaw on this!

But what happens if the mage gets tired of being a slave, rebels and kills the handler and flees? Do the Qunari have something similar to phylactery for tracking them down?
