First off. After reading through related posts I cant seem to find a solution to my problem.
Game Version: 1.23.1765
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital:
NWN2: Retail CD
MOTB: Atari DL
SOZ: Atari DL
Processor Manufacturer: AMD
Processor Type: AthlonXP
Processor Speed: 2500+
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP3
System RAM: 1 gigs
Video Card Manufacturer: ATI
Video Card Model: Radeon x1550
Video Card RAM: 256 megs
Video Card Driver Version: Latest
Sound Card Manufacturer: Unknown
Sound Card Model: Unknown
Sound Card Driver Version: Unknown
Problem
Description: I can install and run NWN2 fine so I dont think it is a
driver issue. I can install and run MOTB fine also.At this point the updater seems to work fine. I can also install and run SOZ fine. However, the updater no longer works. I have to update manually. After updating to the most recent patch the game itself fails to load.
The following error comes up:
'This
application has failed to load because the application configuration is
incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.'
I have reinstalled the game and expansions several times.
Still with the same result: Working fine in NWN2,MOTB, and SOZ. It only stops working after the manual updates.
I would like to know why the automatic update doesnt work, as I have a 2nd machine (vista) in which the auto updater works fine. I have narrowed down the manual update problem to version 1.22.1586 and beyond. I can still run the game under version 1.21.1549

Your old and weak video card was NEVER supported for this game, and thus, it's not SUPPOSED to do much of anything correctly, it's just a modified X1300, after all.
FYI, here is a recycled copy of a March, 2007 performance list that was Pinned on the Top of the Legacy NWN Forum after it replaced a prior version. It's out of date, but is newer than an X1550, by over a year:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/158/index/4396251
Here it is next to a card that does work adequately well, and is two years older, but was a fast card:
www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php
The official minimum Radeon is slower than that, and doesn't really handle the "usual" definition for what a minimum card should do:
www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php
As you can see, the poor junker card you have can't even do what it is able to do. The X1550 can only perform at the 80% level compared to the official named minimum Radeon. (And only has 60% od the memory bandwidth, so it can only pass 128 MBs of VRAM over for games to use).
Since NWN2 only uses SM-2, the existence / omission of the full range of Dx9.0c is inconsequrntial.

First off thankyou for taking the time to reply to my post...
However, those reports you linked to seem inaccurate. From what I can read it is only showing that the card is only pixel shader 2. I know for a fact that the card I have, which is AGP not PCI by the way, is in fact pixel shader 3. I also ran an online system requirements test to which my gfx card passed minimum requirements for SOZ.

If you were (pick a word for being sucker bait) enough to rely on SR Labs' typically inaccurate results, they have no idea at all that your poor old POS card is just a renamed X1300, they are more ignorant about video cards there than the average twelve year old is.
Pixel shader 3 has no relationship with IMPROVEMENTS in raw speed, on the contrary, it adds to the burden on a Low End $30 business card such as that one is (if you paid more for it, you were ripped off).

I'll open up my questions to anyone else that can explain it to me.
1: What could be causing the automatic updater NOT to work. I know the servers
are up because I can update NWN2 on my other machine no problems.
2: Why does SOZ work fine on an earlier version and not after applying manual updates.
My reasons for seriously doubting it being my gfx card are because I can run NWN2 fine with the SOZ expansion. The problem seems to lie with updating beyond a certain point. Rather than fork out for a new GFX card (on an old) machine). I would first like to rule out any other possabilities.

Why it is all true what Gorath says about the video card being a bit too weak for the game, it has nothing to do with the updater problem at all. While the video card won't give you any good performance, it'll still output a picture and the game will run on it. This is totally unrelated.
The updater problem is a known one, people ran into it regulary, I was hit by it myself. Try to find the standalone patches at the nwvault and the standalone patcher program, that's a pain in the rearside, but should work if you keep the correct order of patches.

Thanks casadechrisso. Ill give that a try and let you know. I did try the standalone patches via the built in update prog but to no avail. does the standalone patcher do something different ?

Your video card is inadequate, but, try uninstalling completely. See Selen's post here http://social.biowar...8/index/3116296 about uninstalling and installing. Also make sure you have at least .NET version 3.5 installed. Run as administrator if able, turn off antivirus, etc, etc.

Finally got it working folks. I think it was combination of the Patcher prog, and .Net needing a minor update.
Thanks for all your input. Much appreciated.
