Blizz's patching has always been fine imo, also WoW beta stability was a good as release quality for 99% of games out there. Yes, it has evolved and now it's even better than before, but back then, it was miles ahead of anything else out there.
The patcher and I just never worked together. It always seemed like it to so long to transfer, download and install. Maybe it was my patience when the game first game out but I don't have fond memories of it. As long as they continue to work with what they have in place now for their other games, I'm happy.
When the game first game out, most people -I know I did- had slower connections. Minor patches are usually small but major patches could be a bit of a pain. Also if it weren't a major patch you could always login to play, patch download was taking place on the background and when you exited the game patch installed, it was an option in the game setting somewhere.
These days (I've quit WoW) I installed WC III+Frozen Throne+patches, it took like ~40 min total, which imho is not too bad.
