This Rankings list started from Obsidian's readme, found on NWN2's DVD (I've had to add a couple of cards that they had skipped right over, or that have appeared since then, that otherwise qualify), and I've reordered the sequence, ranked to suit NWN-2, at least, IMO, on shader 2.0 speed.  The sorting order remained "temporary" from March, '07 (awaiting more actual in-game benches -- so far, only Gamespot has had anything to consider) .  Note: this ranking list is my own replacement of Graphics Rankings "FAQ" #2: http://nwn2forums.bi...12861&forum=116, although I do not expect it to also be stickied at the top.

Suffixes, from Good to Awful

ATI Suffixes: XTX > XT > XL > Pro > GTO > Vanilla > GT > SE > Hyper Anything

nVidia: Ultra > GTX > GT > GS > Vanilla > LE = XT  > VE > TC (Turbocache, any variety)

To the total noobs to PC Gaming, wanting to ask about low quality semi-garbage video cards.  Here's the lineup of those "No-Go" parts {ranked in reverse order of ineptitude - best is first, worst is last, and Intel, naturally, isn't in the running at all}):

HD 3470 > 9400 GT > 8500 GT > HD 2400XT > X1300 Pro > X1550 > 7300 GT > 6600 Vanilla > HD 3450 > 9300 GS > 8400 GS > 7300 GS > HD 2400Pro > 8300 GS > X1300 > 7300 LE > X550 > 7200 GS > X300 > 9550 > X1050 > X300 SE > Xpress200 (IGP) > 7100 GS > 6200A.

Incidentally, save yourself some money if you think a "lot" of RAM is so wonderful!  512 MB VRAM Scam:

P. S.  This is now over three years out of date, but there are similar lists in the archives of the DA and ME-2 tech forums that are up to date.  NWN2 is so old that the current High End is all above the recommended Level.  When this was a new game, and during the runup to its release, I was a regular on the Legacy NWN2 forums, until I just couldn't handle Stanley Woo's ignorance any longer.

There is a newer rankings list somewhere in the old Legacy Forum Archives that included the Geforce 8n00 and the Radeon HD 2n00 Mainline and High End, but I don't seem to have a copy in my own archives.

You missed one, the 9800 GTX+ out-performs the 8800 series cards in NWN 2 ;)

Here's the top end of the DA: O rankings, not including the GFX 460 yet.

(Starting from Fastest, through Minimum Capability)

- ATI Radeon HD 5900 series
- nVIDIA Geforce GTX 480
- ATI Radeon HD 5800 series
- nVIDIA Geforce GTX 470
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX275 - 280 - 285 - 295 and 465
- ATI Radeon HD 5700 series
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX260
- ATI Radeon HD 4800 series
- NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
- NVIDIA GeForce 9800 series
- NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series
- ATI Radeon HD 5600 series
- ATI Radeon HD 4700 series
- NVIDIA GeForce 9600 series
- ATI Radeon HD 3800 series
- ATI Radeon HD 4600 series
- ATI Radeon HD 2900 series
- ATI Radeon X1950 series
- ATI Radeon X1900 series
- NVIDIA GeForce 7900 series

You needed to see the rankings list in the DA: Origins & ME-2 forums for the up to date lists, since they are relatively current, while NWN2 is not.

Performance for the 9800 GTX ranks about equal with the GTS 250, and both out-perform the lesser versions of the 9800 series. The above information could be confusing to non-tech players who may opt for the less expensive version of a series only to be disappointed. For example, the perfaormance of a 9800 GTX+ vs an 8800 GT is rather stark, and nearly as much of an improvement as an 8800 GT is over a 7600 GT, and I have all three of the cards I mentioned.

Because developers have opted to begin naming entire card series as supported, and trying to ignore the individual differences within the series, my own rankings at the extremes follow that bare bones pattern, although if you have followed the link, you saw that in the range level at which official System video card names are referenced, I do break out the individual cards' own positions.

So, in theory... how would the DDR 5 version, 512 Mb of video ram, Geforce 240 GT perform on the newer card list? Sure, it's too new to be supported... but I'm just curious... is it because I'm running this on 1600 x 1050 and highest settings why it CTD's every time I exit a building in win 7 64 bit?

As always (at least ever since the release of the Geforce 8800s), you must pick and choose carefully among nVIDIA's drivers to suit the game(s) you want to run -- the percentage of the drivers that are actually usable for a particular matchup of card and game varies by the cards, with the 8600 GTS having the most frequent incompatibilities, the 8400 GS right there with it, and the 8800 GTX running a close third place.

The newer your card, the fewer problems, except where PhysX is involved, & that is giving newer Geforces some trouble now.  AFAIK, both the GDDR3 GT240 and the GDDR5 version have the same firmware, so they should both relate the same way to the various nVIDIA drivers.

http://www.gpureview...1=620&card2=619

As you can see from the comparison, the main thing affected by the change is the bandwidth, which means that the GDDR5 version is able to pass its full 512 MBs of VRAM to games far more frequently than for the one with a narrower bandwidth (the GDDR5 card may even, theoretically, be able to access more VRAM than 512).  .

well I know WHY I got the DDR 5 version... just was wondering if I should perhaps choose lower settings? Maybe I'm choosing something the card doesn't support?? Don't see how though...

What would you recommend the settings be on a monitor that has a native resolution at 1680 x 1050 for that card? It definitely doesn't bat an eye at newer games running on max settings, that's for sure... totally great FPS on dragon age: origins, for example...
