I've been having this exact problem off and on for the past 3 or 4 days. As GreyWarden36 says, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I keep thinking some action *I* have taken has resolved it (fiddling with Port Forwards, DMZ, etc.) but just when I think it's fixed, it quits working again.

Given the sort of set up the 360 has with the internet I assume once all is set up we as the end user won't have to fiddle with settings much (if at all); the whole idea of ease of use with consoles and all that.
I still think it's likely to be an intermittent thing. It could just be a connection problem due to your service provider for example, as well as an actual problem with EA servers.
Truthfully if it really is an issue with the EA servers the 'best' thing to do would be contacting EA support to see if they know anything about it; possible down times, maintenance and other such things. At least you would know and know what to expect.

I've been experiencing this quite a bit for the last few days, as well. If I keep trying, it eventually lets me in (though that gets quite tedious after a while <_<). The time fix mentioned on the first page doesn't work for me, nor does anything else I try to do to fix it.
I guess you can only really keep going at it until it finally lets you in. It works well enough for me, for now.

EA_AgentX has directed others to this page for further suggestions with regards to a fix.
Some have laid the problem squarely at EA, and given the frequency it seems to be cropping up that may well be true. I have had the occasional game where the connection has dropped or not been able to connect though that was on PC; plus gaming offline almost exclusively on the 360 means I am blissfully unaware of the problem (and I do have access to all my dlc as well).

Just to verify, this issue happened to me this morning and I cleared the system cache first, and it corrected the problem. Thank you!

I'm fairly certain clearing your Xbox's cache can corrupt particular save files. So I'm not going to be going that route.
But this issue is also happening to me, and it's frustrating as hell.

Clearing the cache shouldn't corrupt particular save files; it should only remove temporary files and usually game updates. So if you patched the game to patch 1.04, play Awakening, clear cache and then try to play Awakening I suspect you can't. (Awakening requires patch 1.03 to work.) That's speculation on my part, and actual cases can be strange.

I am having the same issue right now.
I was happy seeing there is a whole thread about this problem thinking it would be probably fixed soon ... then I saw the dates of those posts.
Not only is the game (occasionally?) made unplayable due to some *** up on EA side, but they were unable to fix it for over a year? Hell, it seems its actually getting worse.

If, as some speculate, the servers are now being limited due to DAO being an 'old' game, then pragmatically I wouldn't expect there to be any real improvement concerning the issue if it's a matter to do with server capacity.
I would suggest gaming offline to avoid those particular connection issues (dlcs can be used offline so you'll have full access to the game). Of course, if the whole updating your characters on the forum here is paramount that's not going to be the solution (you could just connect every now and then).

Is Dragon Age: Origins on other platforms affected as well? and how about Dragon Age 2 on Xbox 360?

Short answer: yes, and yes.
Waffles with cream to follow.
Connection issues have cropped up with alarming frequency over the last couple of months or so across most titles and formats that I am aware of. So it would seem to indicate a general server issue (assuming that everyone who is bringing up this issue has eliminated all possibilities from their end, and some times that isn't the case), though I would still expect the DAO servers to be harder hit.
I would expect EA to prioritize certain games over others. For example, when their new sports games are released and there's online matches and stuff, I would guess they'd want to give those more attention; basically any game that has proper online play modes. A game like DAO doesn't really need the servers (aside from those story/character updates regarding your game and to me that is largely superfluous though some do like it) aside from the authentication of the dlc (for PC).

It seemed to be fine for few days, but its broken again.
Its pretty annoying for me, but at least I have all the DLCs on the HDD - it has to be much more annoying for people who need some DLCs activated using BioWare/EA servers.
It would be a non-issue, if they used vanilla Microsoft / Sony infrastructure, but since they invaded consoles with their ****ty online services, even console gamers are going to have issues.

I'm starting to believe this is just unfix-able. I been testing it for the past hour or two. I was able to log in DAO, DA2, and ME2 for a little bit. I switched games to test if I was able to and I was. Than I switched to ME2 and suddenly I can't again. I than went to Dead Space 2, I wasn't able to right away, but I waited 5ish minutes and I was able to log into Multiplayer. I decided to test it now and went to Crysis 2 and I was able to log into Multiplayer on my first try.
It has been happening a lot recently, with "old" games. When we all got the game as it came out, it wasn't an issue. Now that time has passed, it got progressively worse and worse. This is DEFINITELY on EA. If we were able to before, than all of a sudden got problems, it should not be on our end. I'm glad I CoD and stuff cuz this is getting beyond frustrating to me. Not be able to log in when I play ME2, DA2 and DAO.
Maybe their servers after some time. just prioritize there games or something. I don't see they seem to care at all about this. I have seen nothing from EA regards to people having issues. None. This is exactly why I hesitate to play any EA games.

I agree with the thought that EA servers prioritize certain games, which is something I suggested previously. It is doubtful that there is anything an end user can do to solve the connection problem a lot of you have encountered.
However, on console the connection for some of these games is unnecessary to actually play the game and access the associated dlc. I ask the question (again but in a different form): can you not play offline? That would avoid the connection problem.

It is true you don't need to log in to play. I'm a perfectionist. Little things that don't work properly bug the hell out of me and this happens to be one. I was able to connect to ME2 just right now. (I hope I didn't curse myself.) Maybe it does have to do with the times? I don't know.
I never had issues until about a week or more so. Before Gears 3 released I had 0 issues with the above games I have mentioned. After Gears 3 it seems spotty. However I tend to play in the early morning (12am +) If it has to do with time, than that's just massively stupid.
Edited: Welp said that too soon. Now I can't again. Maybe the games that do not have multiplayer isn't the issue. Maybe they have limited the log ins on the old games? I should probably stop trying to care because I can't seem to figure it out. I know I can get on in Crysis 2 (tried it still works.) Hell I even downloaded the beta for Battlefield 3 and I have no trouble getting into online play. Just the single player games (now month or so) I have on and off issues.

If connection to the server is mandatory in order to play games like DAO, DA2 and ME2 then I wouldn't be able to play them offline. But I can play offline so the connection isn't necessary.
If all your accounts are correctly associated then you can play offline regardless of your server connection status. (At least that is how it is supposed to work, though there has been an exception discussed here before.)
See if you can play offline; if not post again and I'll run through standard procedure with you.

I can play offline. I don't think it's really an issue. I just don't like not being able to connect to a server. I'm almost certain I'm not the only one with the problem but I guess most people stopped really caring at this point. I can understand that not a lot of people are connecting to DA2 anymore, probably.
However it should be EA's damn job to make sure everything is working properly. Not just multiplayer but single player games that connects to servers as well. If we can't, what is the point? I should note again I never had any issues with the servers until late August of this year. So, I have no clue what is the deal, I'm starting to be pretty angry with EA.
Like I have said. When we all got it regardless of what platform (I'm on 360.) I have had 0 issues, unless I have internet trouble. Than around August, some people earlier, started having issues with DAO, DA2 and ME2 with connection to the server. I have been testing for the past week or so. I try daily to connect to Crysis 2 and I have 0 issues getting into multiplayer. I try ME2, DA2 and DAO. I usually won't be able to connect to the server. (It doesn't stop me playing offline but I usually don't now at this point. Again, since this past August of 2011. For me it usually says Dragon Age servers temporarily unavaliable.) Honestly, I am a bit tired of this and even though I have some stuff left to do in both ME2 and DA2. I'm not playing anymore due to the crap listed above.
If this is truly they prioritize the games to multiplayer than fine. If it matters any at all, I'm on the West Coast w/ Road Runer net. I don't have internet issues, I'm online very often and watch streams constantly. It is NOT my net. If EA believes it is, they are dumb as hell.

The requirement for internet connection with single player games are silly at best I feel; there isn't really much of a need for it aside from the...usual excuses. For those games that are multiplayer online that's a different story and understandable that a connection is required.
Part of the thing with the Dragon Age games are the more peripheral things attached to it, like character updates and stuff. Loss of the server will take that away from the player; even more so if said player views that as integral to the overall experience.
The connection problem would have always come up when EA wanted control over their own games, and it basically runs the danger that we can't connect for older games. A problem that may not have been so prevalent if Microsoft had total control, or so I would like to think.

The problem for me was that it prevented me from playing altogether. After the server message, it just left me with a blank screen. I had no options and no matter how many buttons I mashed, I couldn't get the game to start. I have spent quite a lot of money on Origins, Awakening and all the other DLC, so was a bit annoyed. Like I say though, prob solved for me. Just hope it stays that way!

Game offline if you can. Avoids the hassle. That's my preference though as I need my connection for the internet; only plug into XBox Live if I want to purchase something.

I think i may have found a temp quick fix for the xbox 360 version. I first tried with dragon age 2 and now it works with dragon age unlimited edition. If you register your version of the game with the site here it seems to connect but only for a few days sometimes more. When it stops working you just need to unregister and re register it. Can not say if this works with the pc, ps3 or other versions of the game I did not list.

It can not be that annoying for a fix. This is obviously a problem Bioware just doesn't seem to care for those of us whom has off and on issues since September of 2011.
If there idea of, if you can connect, you're fine. That's hell of a way to treat your customers.

Haven't had this issue with Origins for a while now. DA2, on the other hand, almost never wants to connect to the EA servers. Seems I crawled out of one hole and into another. Lucky me.
