ME1 squad. They are higher level, have more talents and can carry more loot since they actually have an inventory.

How exactly were Garus and Tali integrated into the plot after the Citadel? Or Wrex other than on Virmire?
Loyalty and recruiment missions like Garus', Thane's and Tali's had ten times more character building than anything offered by the party members in ME1.

That emboldened part? Yeah, thats nonsense. What the loyalty missions were were simply "problems" that needed solving, most of which by gunning down hordes of enemies.

They "elaborate" on what the problem is during the mission with a few scant dialogues, but once its finished, its packed up and gone.

It isnt just about having a plot sensitive role, like Mordin. Its the fact that the ME2 crew are mainly resources. They have an almost completely faceless role in the plot outside of their recruitment and loyalty missions.

Tali is Tali in ME1. In ME2, shes one of the interchangable "tech specialists". They took that weakness of ME1 making the characters interjections interchangeable based on a paragon and renegade perspective and applied it to their roles in the game.

But fundamentally, thats the difference. Its not just that Tali, Wrex or Liara have unique roles in the plot itself, but its also the fact that they just have unique roles full stop.

So many of the ME2 squad could be removed from the game and it not change in the least because of that its not even funny.

Well lets compare some positions:

ME1 .. Ash vs. ME 2 Jacob ... Jacob is NOT a priiiize ... Ash wins

ME1 Wrex vs. ME2 Grunt ... I like Grunt but comeon ... Wrex wins

ME1 Liara vs. ME2 Jack ... Yeah right ... Liara wins

ME1 Kaidan vs. ME2 Anyone but Jacob ... ok Anyone else wins

Garrus & Tali are in both crews so nothing there.

ME1 wins 3-1 :) ... Only ME2's size & Mordin make it an interesting choice

I'm going to respond to this as if it were a "What would your ideal ME3 squad look like?"

First, however, The whole ME1 squad vs ME2 squad is a hard debate for me. It's akin to the ME1 plot vs ME2 plot debate. I liked both for different reasons. The second part of a trilogy is usually the most "boring" of the three, with quite a bit more exposition on what's going on, character building, etc. Many new and beloved characters in trilogies are introduced in the second act, Lando Calrissian from Star Wars, for example. I loved the overall plot of ME1, with the overarching threat of the impending Reaper invasion looming over everything, and while I kinda missed that "punch" in ME2, the idea that the Reapers were using the Collectors as tools (like the geth from ME1) kept enough continuity for me to enjoy the story. Plus quite a few of the new characters are worth keeping around.

So, from the ME3 squad perspective, here's my 9:

Garrus

Tali

Wrex (Although it wouldn't really upset me if he stayed on Tuchanka. I just want to go visit him in ME3 at least. It's a reasonable and believable character progression for him, given his story from ME1) If not Wrex, I'll take Grunt. I'd love to see him progress as a character, given that he's mostly a blank slate in ME2.

Kaidan (I actually liked the guy, just not as a LI for my female Shep)

Liara (I like her better as a biotic than Samara)

Jack (I wish there were a way to Paragon Friendship her, without romancing her. I like her romance, but I prefer Tali's. I'd love to see the same character development without the romance)

Mordin (admit it, he's just pure awesome)

Miranda is ok, but I'd be just as fine with a replacement in ME3, a Sentinel squad leader type of character.

My last one is NewSquaddieSoldier. I want another heavy hitter. If I can have Wrex, I'll take Grunt here, but otherwise with just Grunt, I want a new squaddie from ME3.

These are my picks. I'd bring a couple more from ME2 if I could have Kasumi and Zaeed too (both with interesting stories, but dagnabit I want conversation wheels with 'em in ME3!) but if I have to stick to 9, I'd drop Kasumi and Zaeed too.
