Delete the characters from your local vault to solve this problem. In general this occurs if you play on a pw or played some module that uses modified 2da files thus creating your characters incompatible with the default ones. When you select "Select Character" it is missing the 2da entries and the game crashes. Your option for playing on different pw's or using all manners of modules is to create a new neverwinter nights 2 folder in your "My Documents" folder as a safe precaution. You would have to rename the old one to something like "Neverwinter Nights 2-" justso the folder names are different, hope this helps.

EDIT:  Your local vault folder is located in
C:\\Documents and Settings\\YOUR USER NAME\\My Documents\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\localvault

If you don't want to delete your characters, just move them elsewhere so this directory is empty.

BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) is uaually the result of a bad system RAM module, or one that is about to go bad. If you have multiple RAM chips, try removing them one at a time and check to see if it still doesn't work. If not, replace the one you just took out and take out the next. Rinse/Repeat.

Also, from the PC selection screen, the game will crash out if you have any PC characters in your Local Vault folder that require custom game assets such as 2DAs, haks, etc. and those files are no longer in your game folders.

Not always, _Knightmare_ software and hardware can cause a BSOD as well as malware, although the RAM cards are in perfectly good health.

The giggest problem here, is characters from PWs or other custom modules that make use of .haks to create non-standard characters will, in fact, crash the game or the computer, and can cause a BSOD as well.

The recomendation I have is if you are playing modules or playing on PWs that make use of such mods, should keep the characters for those game in a non NWN 2 folder and use them only when playing the the games making use of those mods.

The way to make sure your game isn't adversely being affected by any mods is to rename the Neverwinter Nights 2 folder in your (My) Documents folder to NWN 2 mods and start the game. Starting the game without the correctly named Neverwinter Nights 2 will cause the game to make a new one automatically that is pristine and unaffected by any mods.

You can then copy over characters into the new folder (one at a time and keep trying until you get a crash, then you will know which character is affected.

Okay now I can select the characters but midgame it still will give me bluescreen. Randomly. Played story online with a buddy and just randomly POOF. I doubt its my ram as NWN2 the only thing giving me problems out of all my other games that require more or less computing power. I cleared my WHOLE vault and started from scratch. So thanks for that part. (Not sarcasm am actually grateful that I can play again). Now if only I could play for longer than a few minutes without getting a blue screen I will be overjoyed.

Are you monitoring your GPU temperature? Most commonly, crashes over a period of time, especially when playing NWN 2, may indicate an over-heating issue with your graphics card. However, I will say that you cannot discount your RAM completely if the GPU temps aren't exceeding 80C. The maximum temp on NVIDIA cards is 105C, according to NVIDIA, and some cards can actually get a liottle wonky if temps exceed 80C.

Yeah, sounds like a hardware overheating issue somewhere.

Forgive my ignorance but is the op talking about selecting/changing char while in combat or selecting a char to play a new game?
My current game (playing the original NWN2 campaign) continually crashes while selecting chars while in combat. Going to try the above fix on the off chance were not talking about selecting a char for a new game :D
