Yeah, my bad. I thought steam unlock was a pirate crack. I first locked the other thread, then unlocked it. Apparently, however, I also managed to delete the old thread by accident. My apologies.

That's probably because it's terribly optimised, and not even the "optimisation" patch they released before the Episodes does anything for it.

1GB demo, though? Wow. That's much smaller than I expected. Downloading now.

Just went through the demo...

1. Fist fighting is terrible. I nearly got flattened by some guy because it's... Well, rubbish.
2. Wanted Level needs to be clearer. It's too small, IMHO. I think it should have placed it in the top corner like GTA does, but on a bigger "scale".
3. Shotgun = Wowzer.
4. The graphics are nothing short of amazing. It looks great, even on my 9800GT. And it performs pretty well, too.
5. Cars drive like drunken elephants with no legs. Really wasn't a fan of the limited driving you could do.
6. 10 minutes outside of a mission? Come on, that's ridiculous, even for a demo. The time ends with the end of the mission
7. Combat is... unforgiving. Even though your health refills itself, it only fills to around 75%. Makes a good bit of sense, IMHO. But you're really no tougher than the enemies.
7.5. On top of that, you're not accurate, at least in the demo. It makes shooting that little bit more realistic.
7.5.5. Cover system is good, but it's a bit finnicky. I would rather W or S broke you out of it instead of Left Ctrl.
8. Gah, mouse sensitivity! "Very low", for me at least, was still quite sensitive.

If I end up with £25 spare at some point, I can see myself buying this. It looks like it could be damn good. I don't know if I'd recommend it over GTA IV, going by that demo. I'd need more time to work it out.

Not GTA sandbox game, linear story-based, play like Max Payne with driving.

Antiva has a Queen?

Yes, it does. The Steel Age is proof Antiva has, or had, a monarchy.

There is a legal hex change that gets rid of the game timer.

forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php

Most of the map is still blocked off, so you can still only explore a small portion.

wait... well-optimised? Rubbish, what kind of hardware are you running? not to pry, but I'm using a 2.66GHz Dual Core, 4GB of DDR3 and a GeForce 9800M GT. Got GTAIV last week (bit late), and spent five days optimising it, I get 23fps with high textures, med everything else, low shadows and 0 view distance (with farclp).

I was referring to Mafia 2 well optimized, it runs 40-50fps with physX off.

Grand Theft Auto 4 only runs 20-30fps with no AA and it looks much worse.

I know, I was wondering what your hardware setup was if you can get 40-50 FPS out of a game as good-looking as Mafia. Because, as you can see, mine's hardly a gaming laptop.

9800GT, 2.75GHz dual core (Core 2 Duo) and 2GB RAM (Win XP). I was even on unsupported drivers (game "requires" 196, I think. I'm on 186) and it was pretty smooth for me at 1600x900.

I think I left the settings on default, too.

Demo impressions: Gears of War with some driving.

That it runs better than Grand Theft Auto 4 isn't particularly impressive. 40 to 50 fps is what I get in Mass Effect 2 with 4x super-sampling anti-aliasing on an HD 5770. Game looks no different from the usual console port, with the exception of Nvidia's purposely handicapped on anything but Nvidia PhysX technology.

Actually, the pc was the lead platform. The game also uses a large  SANDBOX environment, not a linear less demanding map, no console game on the market that takes place in such a large enviroment looks as good.  The game runs sub HD on the console, the Playstation 3 version doesn't render grass and the game barely struggles 30fps with tons of screen tearing. The texture filtering is also extremely low. The console  version also doesn't use ambient occlusion.

For comparison, here is supposedly the best looking console game, a linear (not a sandbox) one at that, unlike Mafia 2, depending if you are watching a cut-scene, playing Multiplayer or single player, the image quality changes due to resource usage. This does not happen with Mafia 2.

This is a Mass Effect 2 screenshot, this was built with the console in mind and indeed is a port, note the wishy washy texture (enlarge) on the model and many others, this is due to console resources, it barely runs 30fps on console.

Posted Image

The fact Mafia 2 can be compared to these linear less resource heavy games shows how well optmised it is on the pc, as well as that it was built with the pc in mind. Without modding Grand Theft Auto

Just Cause 2 is a sandbox environment game ported game taking advantage of pc tech, including physX I believe.

Posted Image

Grand Theft Auto is a sandbox enviroment game, just lazily ported over.

Posted Image

The difference in visual quality should be pretty obvious, if it isn't, enlarge the image stamps to full size.

PhysX isn't "PC Tech" as the SDK allows for all major platforms. The PC is the only one with "specialised" hardware for it, however.

But still, GTA IV is a poor port. Just Cause 2 cannot be considered as it's DX10 (and above) only, whereas GTA IV, Mass Effect 2 and Mafia 2 work with DirectX 9.

Which makes it "pc tech".

No more than the Wii's motion control capabilities make it "console tech" or "Nintendo tech".

I just finished Mafia again about 20 minutes ago,  great climatic
ending. I recorded it with fraps upload to youtube for posterity sake, nostalgia goodness.

PhysX is PC tech? No its not. Its available and has been used for games on the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3. Maybe the specific hardware that the pc can use to make advantage of PhysX you could call

"pc tech" (whatever thats supposed to mean) but not physx itself.

The Wii controller is "pc tech"? Care to elaborate a little on that.
