So, I have a level 6 Rogue and I just entered the village of Lothering. Up to this point I have pick-pocketed without any failures. I notice that there are a couple of NPC's that have "!" above their heads which I assume indicate they have a quest. I go and talk to them but they won't talk to me because they heard I was a troublemaker and to stay
away. I assume this is the penalty for stealing? I will be unable to do quests that npc's offer throughout the game because the number of times I've successfully pick-pocketed npc's?

I don't know if its the stealing or if you just pissed some NPC's off. My rogue stole from everyone and never had a problem getting quests from people.

Spoiler:

If you did fail even a single pick-pocket on anyone in towns or cities, you will run into a random event in Denerim, where a small army of 20 soldiers will zerg you for stealing. If you can manage to live through that, you will not face any other problem.

Well, I haven't done anything that would cause a negative reaction in Lothering....I even kicked the Bandits on the highway out of town. I went back and re-loaded a prior save, where I just entered the village and then went to talk to these same NPC's. Both of them gave me their quests. So, I reloaded again and this time got my number of steals up to 100 and then went to talk to them.....they both told me I was a trouble maker and to stay away.

Wrong. If you keep the bad luck charm you get from stealing, then that happens. You will keep meeting those soldiers if you keep the charm, so sell it to a merchant that you can retrieve it from later when you are feeling bloodlust.

There are certain places where people will call you a troublemaker simply by virtue of being a Grey Warden. Never had it prevent questing, though.

I was just wondering what the penalties for stealing were myself, as it seems like it doesn't seem to have any effects whatsoever but I'll keep an eye out in Denerim for that. Did anyone steal from the merchant in Lothering? I stole this amazing Uber Crossbow that my characters wont be able to use for another 10 levels.... hahahaha!

How do you get the Unlucky Charm? Sounds like it'd be useful for grinding my level up.

I've had the unlucky charm for 12 levels now, and have never run into a bunch of gaurds.

Don't level up to fast, Game is designed to Level with you.

I... what?

I'm not sure how you could level up too fast after getting the charm. And given that the game levels with you, I don't think it's possible to level too fast.

Charm only gives you +1 % if you are speaking of the Memory band.

Also, if you level to fast, hit level cap and then have 1/2 to 1/4 game left, I do not know about everyone else, but that would make the game very boring...

In Lothering at least, if you pick pocket too many folks you can lose out on at least one quest; the one from the woman wanting you to make spring traps for her farm. I didn't fail any, but I did pick pocket everyone in town :)

Its sort of disappointing in a way, though probably more realistic.

Stupid question. But is there a level cap? It says very specificaly in the game guide that character levels are not hard capped. In essence they are soft capped though, since every level is naturaly harder then the last to achieve.

The manual lies. The game caps at 25. Seriously, how do they just outright lie to us this entire time? Not only does it do so in the manual but the developers did as well.

I once had a lecture by Duncan for failing a pickpocket on a knight at Ostagar... I felt like I was in the headmaster's office... *shivers*

No, we're not talking about the memory band. There's an unlucky charm you can pickpocket off someone.

There is no level cap.

Seriously? If that's true, it makes me unhappy.

I can't confirm it myself but several people who've glitched up to 25 have said as much plus the levels only go up to 25 on Georg's site.

It really pisses me off it's true. Makes me wonder what else they've lied about? I can think of more than a few things that I always thought were suspiciously close to dev-speak for "It's like this because we say so and because we're right. Questioning is not allowed."

I gave Bioware the benefit of the doubt because, in my experience, they've always been rather open and friendly with their fanbase. If true, this makes me question that.

Did they actually say GAME had no level cap or were they reffering to the Tool Set and what community could later create.

As far as I remember I never seen anything about a no Level cap?

They were continuously asked "Is there a level cap?" The answer was always "There's no hard cap but most will be around 18-21 at the end of the game," or something similar with mention of a soft cap.

If you check your manual, it even states that there's no hard cap and specifically uses the "soft cap" terminology. After asking on the other forum, I was told this is true and procceeded to have a few people tell me I was crying or "QQ"ing for being ticked that they lied about something so simple.

I'm hoping a developer will see the post and give me an actual reason it had to be done.

Did you by any chance get attacked by a group of refugee's after the bounty on your head & kill them ?

if so this is the reason they say you are a troublemaker and to stay

away

I'll have to check if I have this unlucky charm. I got 2 random encounters in Denerim with lots of soldiers. Annoying battles those were. I did similar to the thugs and retreated to separate the groups a little, but still a rough battle.

And I killed the refugees too, but it seemed I was able to do most of the quests.

I have pickpocketed everyone I come across. If I failed (which lead to bad remarks), I reloaded and skipped that person. So per the stats in the codex, my character has 0 fails and all successes. Have not been hampered once on a quest or received any negative remarks from anyone.

Now as to the zurg encounter in the world map. That only happens if you have Lilliam in your traveling party. Don't forget, she is running from her past, and that is just part of her past catching up to her. When I travel with anyone else, I don't get attacked. But if Lilliam is my party, I get attacked. So it is not a consequence of stealing.

Now it hasn't happened yet, but from a cutscene I just saw, I'm guessing that I'm about to be attacked by assassins, but that is part of the story line.

First off, her name is Leliana, and the encounter is Denerim specific not world map and has nothing to do with Leliana.

This happens if you take up Slim Couldry's thieving quest
