Weekly prompt/contests

Zevran's First Night prompt by BloodsongVengeance

How the Prompts Work
  • The prompter sets the prompt topic, the time limit (if there is one; 3 hours is the usual), the acceptable format ("anything" is customary!), and the deadline. Specific deadlines -- a date and time, with the appropriate timezone -- are the most helpful.
  • The prompter may designate a prize of their choice, but this is definitely not a requirement!
  • Folks submit their entries by posting to the thread. Usually, stories are posted elsewhere (the BSN blogs are useful for that) and linked to from the thread, to keep post sizes reasonable. It often helps if you quote the original prompt in your post to capture the banner and the prompt itself.
  • Non-competitive entries are always welcome! These can include entries that exceed the time limit, late entries, previously created works that fit the theme, entries by the prompter, or other things that you don't want to enter into the actual competition.
  • Anyone who participates in the prompt, competitive or not, is eligible to pick the next prompt. Usually, the prompt will be chosen by someone who has chosen the least amount of prompts, so to help everyone figure out who that should be, you can list how many prompts you've given along with your entry.

Ok, here's the deal. Anyone/Everyone can copy and edit this list. Keep it snowballing.

Only rule: if the Zevthread in any way inspired the creation or continuation of a Zev-themed project, add it. (Mods made for Zevran but not inspired by this thread shouldn't be added, those go on Sresla's big list of Zev mods etc though!). =P

Can be... groups, mods, threads, fanfics, fanarts, blogs, whatever...this is what we will paste to the haters

This wasn't here when I started to port the thread over, I swear.  But this thread has a much cooler name.

They relocked ZevThread (because I didn't realize someone else was also copying over and I told Seagloom when I was done) but you can yank the BBCode for the contest entries off my thread.  If you use the quote function, turn the edit screen over to BBCode, copy it, then open a new reply here, set *it* to BBCode and paste, you shouldn't get the wonky line breaks.

Tenuvien strokes the small golden earring on her left ear with thumb and finger and a pensive wrinkle forms on the base of her nose.

"Zev," she whispers

"Hmmm"

"Oh, I thought you were asleep already ..."

Her lover lifts his head from the pillow in her direction and his sleepy look reveals that she was not entirely wrong. The elven woman blushes and tenderly strokes a lock of his blond hair out of his face.

"Sorry, I did not want to..."

Zevran chuckles softly and gives her a kiss on the tip of her nose.

"What did you want to ask me, tesoro. In the middle of the night…" he asks with a smile

"I ... you .. You have given me this earring. And told me the story about it…" 

Again she touches it with her hand.

"I thought ... Well, I thought you would like jewelry. That’s why I gave you the bracelet.  And the necklace.  And ... you gave me your thanks and you were very kind, but ...you did not seem to be very enthusiastic and you do not wear them. So I guess… you do not like them?  Am I right? "

The elf giggles again and kisses Tenuviens blushed cheeks.

"What shall I do with such a wise woman?"

He puts his right arm around her shoulders and she cuddles with her head on his chest, enjoying his warmth, the sweet, familiar scent, while he continues:

"It's not your fault, cara mia. It's just ... the goldsmiths of Ferelden simply have no finesse. Their jewelry is chunky, rough. And it is so sad, because the metallurgists of Ferelden, especially the dwarves of Orzammar are true masters of their trade. They produce the most precious alloys. Nowhere in the whole of Thedas you will find bars of purer gold. But the processing ... "

He sighs softly ...

"They should better leave it to others. I know a goldsmith in Antiva City, if he would get one of these bars of Fereldan gold in the hands ... What he could make of it... "

A dreamy look in his gold brown eyes aims at an indeterminate distance, while he holds the thumb and forefinger of his left hand up as if they would hold a treasure.

"Necklaces, rings, tiaras, all for you, amore. And, well, maybe a few ornaments for my belt and boots. No?”

Tenuvien watched her lover for a while with amusement. The thought that she would have all these Antivian jewels on her person made her snort in laughter. She -a girl from the Alienage of Denerim- with precious jewels like a queen, all delicate golds and spun silver.

Torn out of his thoughts by her reaction Zevran aims a well placed kiss at her throat, Tenuvien still laughing. This night was much too precious for sleeping, like the delicate coils of gold he dreamt his lover would wear.

This probably could have been longer if I hadn't gotten distracted halfway through and used up time doing stupid things but, well...such is life.


Zevran looked down at the small gold bar in one hand and the medium silver bar in the other with a slight smile on his face. He was pleasantly surprised when the brave and beautiful Warden who had chosen to, against all odds, spare his life had not only noticed his fascination with these precious metal bars but had chosen to indulge him by letting him claim them whenever they stumbled across any.
 
Yes, it was certainly very good of her though he got the impression that she didn’t really understand. That was fine, though; let her think he was just drawn to symbols of wealth. In some ways, it was even true. There was always going to be something powerfully alluring about such an obvious status symbol to a boy born in a ****house and sold for three sovereign. These bars served as a tangible reminder that he wasn’t that boy anymore. Three sovereign? With a few of these he could have bought his own freedom and more. Not that he was naïve enough to think that, were he to be able to magically send his present wealth to his seven-year-old self, that he could have such precious treasures without them being taken but the point remained the same. He wasn’t that boy anymore. He had known that for quite some time – they really had very little in common besides the name – but the bars made the disparity all the more striking. How could he be anything like his past self when he could afford to be so casual about the same amount that had decided his fate and had taken him from the path of ‘future ****’ and placed him on that of ‘future assassin.’
 
That was another reason, of course. He hadn’t had any say in either of those futures although he did vastly prefer that of an assassin. Had he not been chosen by the Crows after all or the deal had fallen through would he have not been able to imagine any life but that of a ****? Probably. He had a feeling he’d even be content there. That was how you survived, after all, by not wallowing in your misery. Still, though his current path was also chosen for him until this pesky Blight was over with, he had been promised his freedom once that was over with. Even better, he was told he could leave at any time but as long as Taliesin was still out there, that was simply not a realistic option.
 
It was all well and good to be content in your confinement and he was content here, with the Warden, journeying to end the Blight. He had been content in Antiva living the life of an assassin, particularly after he’d survived his training. The bars, however…that had been romantic sentiment on his part and not something he would ever willingly admit to. Small, unmarked bars of silver and gold…that was quick, easy currency. If he were to ever just leave it all – well, leave it all again after that ill-fated trip to see the Dalish – then those bars would be his means to achieve it. He had long suspected that this was exactly the reason that the Crows, while they had easy access to whatever material comforts they could ever desire, were never given much coin. A gilded cage was still a cage, after all, and there was to be no means of escape save death. If there had been, he probably wouldn’t have chased his own destruction quite so single-mindedly.  
 
He’d had to leave most of his collection behind when he’d gone off chasing the Warden and his end – and it wasn’t like he was liable to need them anyway – but he’d since started amassing them again. Logically, he knew that he probably wouldn’t need an escape plan from the Warden since it was more his own enemies keeping him here rather than any compulsion on the Warden’s part. Still, even though he had much readier access to actual currency than he’d ever had before old habits died hard.
 
It was easier to stockpile little bars than gold sovereign anyway.

I'm posting this clarification by request. With the two thread locks and rash of warnings, it may not be entirely clear what is okay and what isn't.



Try to keep the topic focused on Zevran. Fanart, stories, and screenshots are okay. Some off topic diversion is expected as conversations do evolve and it would be unrealistic for me to expect every post rigidly stay on point. If the conversation extends to LGBT topics and how they pertain to Dragon Age, that is okay too. Just try not to delve into the latest political news and such, as politics are verboten on these forums.



The reason I asked no one to post rainbow themed photos is not because I have anything against showing pride. Rather, photos of real life individuals in the frequency they were posted strayed a bit too far off topic. An occasionally one to emphasize a point in your text or the like is fine, but whole posts of them is too much. That aside, I do not want anyone to feel uncomfortable discussing sexual preferences and related issues. Zevran is a bisexual character, so it is only natural the conversation go in that direction sooner or later.



If anyone comes in here trolling with hate speech, please report to me and it will be dealt with accordingly. Apparently that was an issue before and I was unaware of this when locking the previous thread. That is not tolerated here. Period.



If anyone has any questions, feel free to send me a message. I know it might feel a bit weird starting over after settling into a comfortable routine in the previous thread. Hopefully everyone will adjust given time. So um... that's it. Please excuse my interruption and carry on.

How come Zev makes fun of Harrowmont for not daring to meet potential supporters and not Bhelen for doing the same? (Granted, he does cite that Harrowmont's Proving fighters are running off...)

Yes, I think it's because of the Proving fighters. And Bhelen is more corrupt, and Zevran seems to like corrupt politicians. ;)

And at least - he is totally right about Harrowmont (as we all know from the epilog ;))

Same here, actually. I only popped in around page... 1390 or so Posted Image

My first playthrough was an Alistairmancing f!Tabris. I made it a point to avoid anythign DA-related on the internetz because I have had way too many things spoiler'd for me in the past. f!Tabris did the zevromancing on the side until the "choose between us!" thing and I made her go with Alistair because of twooo wub I thought Zevran wasn't really LTR material (oh my ignorance!) At the time my friend who was watching me play (and had gotten some spoilers elsewhere) warned me that I should have stuck with Zev, but little did I heed her until I got f!Tabris's ass dumped and her ex fed to the archdemon. (Of course I fired up a reload after that, but that's off-topic).

Anyway, after I was done with 1st playthrough I hit the internetz and was shocked to find out that you can actually romance Zev as a male, and that it's a real romance. So I fired up an m!Surana and haven't looked back since! (Not to mention Zevran has completely eaten my artistic muse alive and taken its place. Posted Image)

What's the (Romantic) Appeal of Zevran?


I did not answer the question yet. I could not read the whole thread (I’ve already read too much of it, that’s crazy enough.) Somebody wrote (was it Ejoslin?) that everybody seems to have his or her “own Zevran” or at least own Zevran-story. So – here is mine…

For me Zevran was “love at first sight”. I saw this short video after leaving the circle… The way he said his sentence, his moves – smooth like a cat, his whole appearance… I just thought: When will I meet him? Where will I meet him?

But I already had a romance with Alistair in this first play through. I was flirting with Zevran, enjoying his compliments (did not “bed” him), but when it came to the “jealousy-talk”, I decided for Alistair. Zevran made it easy for me, because his it was fun, but Alistair thinks in a different way  was exactly what I thought – my impressions were that Alistairs feelings for my Warden were strong  and honest, whereas for Zevran it was only a kind of capture-game.

In my second play through I wanted to romance Zevran, and I did until the “massage”.  I found the massage itself – or the talk before –funny and sensual. But I was hurt and disappointed by the talk thereafter. I felt dirty and exploited and finished the romance (and the play through…). Then I started a human noble to become queen. I didn’t romance Zevran, but after Taliesen I chose “more than friends”. And then… I was deeply touched by everything what happened… the sudden warmth in his voice, the earring, his difficulties to speak about feelings. This was a completely unexpected change. But afterwards the bedding-scene was the same as before and I only thought – that can’t be right, that must be a bug! :crying:

And so… I found the way to the forums, I was looking for mods which would correct the bugs, I found Dialogue Tweaks, Ejoslins Zevran Dialog Fix, Charsens ZevranASAP, Gatekisses… and all these mods I could only use with the English version. So I worked out how to play the game in English (that was not as easy as it sounds /images/forum/emoticons/angry.png). And finally I could romance Zevran the way I like it. And I can’t get enough of it.  And I can’t say it often enough – THANK YOU FOR ALL THESE WONDERFUL MODS! :wub:

Summary – What's the (Romantic) Appeal of Zevran – for me?

It’s his charm, his wit, the moves, the appearance and the surprising depth of his “love story”. It is not the accent, because Zevran does not have an accent in the German version. As I played the English version for the first time I was initially irritated by his accent, meanwhile I like it, but I was interested in Zevran long before I knew his accent. ;)

Well, both won't meet with you but the reasons seem to be different. Vartag makes it seem like Bhelen's too busy and important to just meet with anyone and so if you want his support you'll have to prove that you won't be dead weight (and if you're the DN he's screwed over then it's a doubly good idea to do this). Dulin, on the ohter hand, talks about how spies keep sneaking in and they can't trust anyone (he actually uses the words "then Harrowmont would have no fear of meeting with you" if you win the Proving which don't sound very strong to me). It's not like Harrowmont's too good for you and normally he'd love to: he's afraid. He can't meet with others because Bhelen's got him terrified and is controlling his freedom of movement. Additionally, Bhelen's quest is basically serving as a messenger as Vartag has some very inflammatory - and false - papers to deliver to Dace and Helmi. Had Vartag delivered them, I doubt they would have rejected the papers outright but, unlike when you do, they would have had them checked at the Shaperate and found out that they were forgeries. Vartag could have found someone else to do it, perhaps, but it wasn't portrayed as necessary for Bhelen to win and you were just convenient. Harrowmont, however, can't make his own men even fight a tournament in his name.

From this, Zevran can deduce  that not only does Harrowmont have problems getting his own people to listen to him when there are altercations but that Bhelen is clearly stronger than Harrowmont. He doesn't even have to care about what happens to Orzammar once he leaves to know it will be easier to stick Bhelen on the throne (not game mechanices-wise unless you count the coup but...) and he'll be more likelyl to be able to supply troops.

For some reason I really wanted to write this script style like you'd see in the toolset, but decided not to. Also, I apparently write really slowly, because this is all I could get out in 45 minutes. Oh well.

“I have a question, Zevran, if I may.”

“And what is that, my good friend Alistair?” Zevran asked.

“Why does Keiran keep giving you those gold and silver bars?”

Zevran pointed towards the Warden, who was walking at the head of the group. “Why not ask him yourself? He is right over there.”

“It's just... I see you polishing them all the time, and I was curious. Why do you like them so much?”

“Ah, I am so glad you asked.” Zevran cleared his throat. “You see, they represent potential.”

“Potential?”

In his most serious voice, Zevran said, “Yes. Right now they are simply slabs of metal, but under a craftsman's hammer they could become anything. Perhaps a piece of jewelry? A pair of rings for lovers, or a fine gold necklace. Or some protective armor? A silver inlay on a breastplate, or a gold helmet for a noble-”

Sarcastically, Alistair said, “That noble must have too much money and no sense if he has a pure gold helmet.”

Zevran chuckled. “Indeed. But my point is that all these lovely things are hiding inside the bars, waiting for someone to bring them out. Once the bar is crafted it is only that one thing, but at this moment an uncountable number of things are hiding inside it.”

Alistair was shocked. “That... is surprisingly deep coming from you.”

“Why, thank you,” Zevran said smugly.

Oghren jogged up beside them. “Don't tell me you bought that load of nug droppings! I bet he just likes them because he can sell them for a lot of money!”

Zevran gasped and clutched at his chest. “You wound me!” he said with mock hurt. “Why would I sell such fine gifts given to me by our handsome leader?”

“Is that true, Zevran?” Alistair said quietly. “Do you really only like them for the money?”

Zevran laughed. “Well, that will just have to be my little secret, yes?” he said slyly.

“Hey! Which explanation is true?” Alistair asked, but Zevran just laughed again and ran up to the head of the column.

Just a few months ago, Alistair would have been certain the assassin was only in it for the money. But now? He didn't know what to believe.
