Once upon a time, someone posted an epic prompt to the kink meme that immediately sparked ideas in my head, and I charged on in. Relevance to this thread is that it's an AU (alternate universe) prompt where Zevran ran away to the Dalish... and stayed there, and met the hard working, put-upon Warden after the Blight. 

A gazillion* words later, I'm finally finished.  The prologue is here (along with the prompt itself), and the rest is linked from there.   A couple of chapters (3 and 4) are NSFW, just sayin'.

doo eeeeet! I must learn how to use this program before my demo version expires... and work up the courage to use something other than the paint tube squeeze tool, palette knife, and square headed brush. Unfortunately the watercolor brush, though it is cool, lags horribly on my crap computer.  (It's a wonder I can run DA at med. textures/graphics...)

aww, I really like this! I could totally see this printed on a nice bristol vellum, in one of those cool little poetry/art anthology pamphlet-books. I am feeling that typewriter-esque font too (has slight typography fetish).

I'm putting my feedback for the challenge submissions in one post so I don't clutter things up

Sarah1281 – that was fun! I enjoyed the whole meta discussion regarding how everyone you meet in the game has one of a handful of styles.  Very clever – I like!
Corker  - heeee! I loved the double-entendre conversation w/ Leliana. Very nice

Hilde  - I loved your story – very sweet interlude.  And I totally agree with you about Zevran being nearly irresistible.  I managed to keep my F!Cousland with Alistair, but it was mostly because of her personality and things that happened before Zevran joined the team.  Alistair was the only bit of stability and security she had after Ostagar, so she had too many stars in her eyes to even see Zevran… silly girl

soignee – Love the poster.  That is hysterical and cute beyond words.

maradeux  - great analogy for Zevran’s “deadly charm”.  At least one of my warden’s can commiserate with your Tenuvien’s "I'm afraid so" thought

payroo – ooohhh… pretty! You got Zevran’s “twinkle of mischief” just right.

Halae Dral – Sword polishing in the bed chamber… heh-heh… (yes, I’ve reverted to 12-year-old-boy mentality   ).  I like!

@payroo  -- Aww, thanks! Regarding the Walking Bomb spell – I remember the first time I cast it and watched the effect go off… I was fairly horrified at first, but then I started laughing.  Watching enemies blow up in a shower of blood and guts gives me a macabre thrill. I’m twisted like that

@jenovan – Thanks for your comment and for inspiring this in the first place!  KaiLynn (at least in the early stages) has no clue what to make of Zevran’s flirting; Kai is a bit of a dork, to be honest.  I have a weakness for insecure nerds apparently, since he’s my favorite Warden so far 

@Corker  - I’m thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the tension; I was hoping it came across correctly, even though the piece was short.  WRT spell casting, Kai takes the whole leader/responsibility thing very seriously, though he’s not very good at it, at times.  Makes for some comic relief amongst the chaos.


Also thanks to everyone for being so nice to me and the rest of the thread-newbies.  Not everywhere is so welcoming.  You rock.

It'd probably take me days to remark on each individually, but all the art and writing I've seen in this thread so far has been really good, so I'd just like to say that. That (and the interesting conversations about Zevran, of course) has been a lot of what kept me lurking around all that time.

Back to topic... I unfortunately missed most of the "serious" discussions in the old thread. And - if you don't mind - I would be interested to know, what you (the current active writers in the thread) like about Zevran.

Reading everyone else's responses to this was really interesting, so I figure I'll try and answer.

I'm having a hard time pinpointing the actual answer (fairly typical for me), so I guess I'll just sort of write how it went down and hope I answer the question somewhere along the way.

I'm partial to both elves and assassin/thief type characters, so ever since I heard about his character pre-release I thought it sounded interesting. I was slightly put off by the character trailer, but then, I wasn't very fond of any of them (or any of the advertising for that matter), so I decided to just sort of ignore that when I was playing through and give them all a chance.

I'd told myself that this time, darnit, I was going to do one of the romances if it seemed natural for the character, because I wanted to see how it went down if I really tried. I usually avoid them much like the plague, the closest being my one Light Side character in KotOR who romanced Carth mostly by accident (which, unfortunately, kind of killed my sympathy for that character since Carth really annoys me), or my character in NWNII who sort-of-almost romanced Elanee except that her timing really sucked (and she kind of annoyed me, too). So if you get the impression that I'm bizarrely picky about NPCs/am not really a fan of romances in general, you're probably right.  

Anyhow. Zemariel was my first character, and I had (largely - it was pretty difficult) avoided spoilers, so I mostly just went through things doing whatever he would do and having no clue what the consequences would be. He was very averse to the arranged marriage in the origin, didn't have any interest in Morrigan or Leliana, and I was starting to think that if I was actually going to try doing one of the romances it was going to have to be with a different character.

He ended up hitting it off with Zevran right away, though - first it was just 'Oh, here's another elf! Cool!' on his part, then I decided I wanted to go for the assassin specialisation and took Zev along for that, kept talking to him all the time because he had interesting stories to tell, and he slowly ended up becoming a permanent member of the party. The romance progressed so naturally I wasn't even thinking of 'just trying it to see how it goes' any more, it just fit perfectly. It ended up adding a lot to the game for me. I was also pleasantly surprised by how much more was revealed about his character as I went through it, and I went from my initial not-entirely-favourable impression of him to thinking 'hey, awesome character'. I like that it takes a long time to really get to know him.

I think I did end up answering the question with that (though it got a bit longer and more rambling than I intended ), or at least probably as well as I can. I'm not so good at saying why I like just about anything.

I think the face counterbalances any romance novel tendencies in the hair, honestly.  From the way it's flared, it seems like he's moving toward the viewer, and I really don't think it's with good intentions.

This exactly.   While he does have that glorious cover model hair, the mood of the picture totally kills that romance cover feel (which is a good thing).

We really need a thumbs-up emoticon.

Anyway, I like it.  And it's just my know-nothing opinion, but I think stark is good.

I imagine a mark seeing that coming at them in a darkened room...
