I was amusing myself with the toolset the other day and came across a line Zevran is supposed to say (I've never heard it) in the Gauntlet, when the party fights and defeats their 'shadow selves':

Z: "Maker's breath, I'm beautiful. Did you see that? Did you see me? Magnificent."

Editor's note: Captivated. Completely misses the point about fighting his shadow self.

...there's a *point* to that? I... had no idea one was supposed to see it as an allegory for defeating one's dark side. I thought it was more spirits being jerks.

@frost, I couldn't even get the VO to work, so I don't know if it ended up being voiced...all the companions had a line. Lel's is a bit scary, she's all freaked out about her other self looking cruel, and wondering if she's a cold-blooded killer deep down. :/



@Corker, That's the point I tended to assume, though the game never made it clear there *was* a point to that fight. I don't recall any of the companions commenting on it ingame, and it looks like they're supposed to. The dialogue is in Sacred Urn --> The Gauntlet --> Party Reaction if you want to take a peek (now you've got it working in toolset )

You know... that would have been about a thousand percent better if there'd been a cutscene where each shadow-companion said something nasty before the shadow-Warden gives a sneer and the silent gesture to lay on.



The "person from your past" still ranks up there as the encounter most consistently likely to send my PC into a fit of rage, though. Oy. Nnnot a fan of the Gauntlet in general.

I appreciated the concept, but they didn't pull it off right...and considering many of the origins don't have a bloody choice about what the Guardian confronts them with, it's a bit unfair to say 'Do you regret...?' something you had no power over.



The CE one, where he asks you if you failed Shianni, is the one that actually makes *me* angry. It's like, 'OMG, you did NOT just blame me for my cousin's rape.'

I extracted the .fsb for it (I was sure I'd heard it before and I find extracting the FSB is quicker for me to do than try to get the toolset to play audio clips because I am a toolset bad) and Zevran's VO line gets cut off.

So magnificent, the game couldn't handle the entire line (Jenovan said that, not me, but it's true.) It's urn230_party_reaction.fsb for those interested, and his is reaction (1).

He wasn't for me... I saw a few clips on youtube before I bought the game and he was so awesome, that I knew I had to have it.

But, I like pragmatic characters who's morality is conditional, and I love perverse humor.  So it's like Zevran was made for me.

I can completely understand how others find him off-puting at first, though... His dialogue was pretty much writen as such that you can't be sure at first weather or not he's really trustworthy, and if you aren't playing a fairly evil character some of his early talks about the Crows and the pleasure in killing are very unsettling.  It's a shame some players never get past that.

And then there's the people who don't realize that they were a bit too friendly and accidentally turned on his romance, or who have a bugged console game where he keeps pewrsuing even after being denied.  I can get how heterosexual males get uncomfortable when they get that bug, but they seriously need to realize it's just a game character and is not seriously questioning your sexuality.    People had that same problem just as often, if not moreso, with Lelliana.  But people just seem to find Zevran's come ons so much more threatening, which I think is a double standard.

Zevran was so sweet with the poetry-reading;

The poetry convo was right after the Gauntlet quest, so he ended with the remark that my Dalish looked unhappy. It was a perfect timing, considering she just heard that she would never see Tamlen again.

Zevran's romance gives such high approval bonuses, many people did not like shooting him down as that really does affect his approval rating. However, there are no bugs where you try to break up with him and it doesn't stick (that's leliana who has those bugs). However, you DO have to make it clear you're not interested -- that's what people balk at I think.



The bugs i think make his romance less appealing are these (there are more bugs than this, mind you, but these are really offputting IMO):



It never updates to love if you get his public kiss

The incorrect dialog triggers at the gates



but also, many people DO miss his final declaration of feelings. Either they don't go asking him to the tent, or they are so put off by his refusal that they don't ask a second time.



As far as an acquired taste? Hmmmm, I'm not sure. If you don't like it the first time you go through it, provided you got an unbugged romance, why would you like it more at a later time? I did learn new things through subsequent playthroughs (like when Zevran confirmed that he and Taliesen were lovers -- that wasn't clear the first few times I did it).



It's a gritty romance, and it's not for everyone. When he complements the warden's looks, it's not as breathless as when Alistair does it, so you're not going to get those flutters (Alistair sounds amazed that he's with such a beautiful woman, where Zevran acknowledges the warden's beauty/handsomeness and while he comments on it, many times, there isn't that note of wonder in his voice).



Zevran also tries to keep a distance, but he doesn't succeed too well, even in the earlier parts of the relationship. That can be offputting as well -- his defensiveness -- though that is mitigated somewhat by his openness about who exactly he is. In his jealousy conversation, the defenses are up full force and there are only a couple of dialog choices in that where he cracks a little -- though he sounds so sad when he's expecting to be dumped, even that, IF you're paying attention, can be enough to realize that he is putting up a front. Even the first time he tries to get a bit more serious with the warden, again, the defenses are up.



But... he asks, straight out, before he will go to the tent, what are your plans for him in the future, after the blight. he is the ONLY love interest who even looks that far. Are you friends only? friends with benefits? perhaps more committed? when you ask him about his past, he doesn't try to pretty it up, and if you see how that would scar him, he not only acknowledges it, but lets you know how he handles it. He's not untouched by his past, his admits that, and still, he learns to trust.



There are not-pretty parts to his romance as well. The after-sex talk is harsher than necessary, though he is affectionate. but when you can ask someone if the sex is just leading up to them murdering you... heh.

I can't remember if I've heard it in game, but I'd heard it before (could have been when I extracted a bunch of his main dialogue) so I won't vouch for the in-game trigger there. I know I've never heard Leliana's or Oghren's but I can't remember now who my (urgh) Cousland took with him to the Gauntlet, besides Zevran. Maybe I should make my New Year's Resolution to finish Sandor's canon playthrough...

I would never even bother finishing the fight.  Kill the first three then just watch.  For a long time
