Edit: About Alistair -- I don't think him pulling away is a bad thing. As he was falling in love, he was totally lost in all the wonderful feelings that come with first love and living for the moment. But after he falls in love, he has to face the fact that things are going to happen that are totally beyond his control, and that may cost him everything he holds dear.

Agreed. I actually like how he stops obsessing about the relationship and just accepts it as part of his life, at least for awhile.
But, I also like Zevran's internal struggle with his feelings. I see Zevran trying desperately not to fall in love because he knows all about tragic endings. And yet, he not only does fall in love, but he risks everything to be by the Warden's side. (Please take my observations with a grain of salt, coming from a Zevran novice and all.)

If I call my husband while he's working on something he answers, "Yes, dear?" with this tone that's rather like Alistair's, and totally different from the way he usually answers ("What's up?"). It makes me want to kick puppies (I didn't mean to interrupt! I'll call back later!). So Alistair's response really annoys me. Probably part of the reason I've romanced him once.ejoslin wrote...
I think Alistair's "Something you need, my dear," has a very deliberate effect -- and it's not the most positive.

But I think he why he doesn't want to fall in love is more to do with how he was taught. Love will get you killed, the only person you can count on is yourself, and he really survived by living for the moment, just enjoying whatever he could. (Then again, I have the unpopular belief that what Zevran didn't actually love Rinna, so, well, take my PoV for what it is).

I think I we have the same thoughts here, just expressed differently. I was not meaning he knew about tragic endings from a personal standpoint, but just that he'd grown up in a life where love meant nothing compared to the knife at someone's throat or the politics involved.
And I don't think he loved Rinna either. I don't think he knew how. I say this because when you ask him if he loves you he says he doesn't know because he's never felt this way before. My one regret with his romance is that I didn't see the trigger for his change of heart. What happened between him and Warden that caused him to lose his heart for the first time?
With Alistair you get a hint of it in the fact that he will comment on being surprised that you actually listen to him. So, you can see he's never had anyone who really cared about him and that makes his falling in love with the Warden much easier to understand.
I realize Zevran would be more subtle in the revealing, and perhaps I've missed seeing the trigger. *shrug*
EDIT: @Creature - It doesn't grate on me that much... I just wish it was more tender like his earlier salutations were.

I like Zev's shock when you give him the boots and the gloves and he has to be talked into accepting them. I had a really cool comment from him with the boots. "No-one has simply given me a gift before." This wasn't true when Erik gave him the boots, as it happened because he had already given him the Dalish gloves, the brandy and possibly a gold or silver bar - Zev is therefor a liar but still endearing. :-)

@Ejoslin - I understand what you're saying. I guess my question is, what makes Zevran trust the Warden? I get that no one's ever been kind to him... just to be kind, but how does he know the Warden doesn't have an agenda? Especially that early on in the relationship?
I guess I would just like to see a little more of that trust build up, if that makes any sense. Maybe a confrontation from another party member where Zevran sees the Warden sticking up for him... I dunno.. it's hard to explain. LOL

I think it's just that no one has ever been nice. Perhaps the trust comes from not killing him to begin with and then instead of being all untrusting and nasty, asking him about himself, trying to learn what makes him tick.
It's one of those circumstances where if you give the non-plot gifts, it seems weird I guess. Though, there is the romance dialog where you ask him about his sexual history where he may tell you that he's on a new path and it's already been many new things. Maybe that's it -- the warden is showing him a completely different way of living than he's ever known.

That could be it. We (at least I) tend to forget sometimes that DAO takes place over the course of a couple years. Menaing there's plenty of time for Zevran to see how much different his Warden is, compared to those he's known in the past. That makes a lot of sense, actually. Thanks!

Great shots, especially coming from what? Taking a pic of your TV screen? I truly admire people who play on a console and still try to grab shots to share.
