Ahhh now I remember the Orlesian person in the Denerim MP had scented bath oils - so yea they exisit in the world of Thedas (I had forgotten that) - but most likely you can get from Orlais - since Antiva is the centre of trade they are most likely even easy to acquire & there was that conversation he had with Alistair with oils and stuff in regard to the ritual tatooing practices he wanted to perform on Alistair (that was too funny) Zev and I would get on IRL coz I get as much fun stirring the NPCs as he does Posted Image  (TIP if you have not told Gheyna you slept with Cammen you absolutely should - its a crack up and Zev gets a lovely piece to say ...)

Not like the idea of bacon grease or fish oil - bleh.... for Alistair yes.... I sense a new practical joke coming of for Zev to play *snickers*

Thank you for your help :)

Hooray! I'm glad you did. =D (And thank you!)
Saving some more "official" comments for the end of the contest, so I can make one of those fancy summary posts that I think I'm s'posed to do at the end, but I figured I should let you know that I read it and definitely enjoyed it. X3 I think Zev had the right of it...and it's not as if the expedition was a total waste of time, right? Heehee.

...
As a general reminder to anyone else who's thinking of entering (you knoooow you waaaant tooooo), the deadline is Wednesday (the 14th) at noon CST! =D

@bitenomnom Ahh, that made me laugh! Nicely done. Eerily similar to what I had in mind, actually. And I'd say (though I'm still pretty newb-ish) it's up to you when and where you comment on people's work, but you will be judging them all together at the end anyway, I suppose.

Anyway, I don't think anyone would need to worry about fish-oil massages. Even if Zev wasn't kitted up ready for impromptu massage sessions, I'm sure he'd have some decent smelling oil handy for, ahem, other possible scenarios. Besides, there must be import traders in Ferelden outside of Denerim.

Oh, and I'll hopefully have something done for the prompt by this evening.

Nice! Posted Image

Woul you mind if I add 'what happened before' part?

Zevran: Tsk, tsk... look at you, that weary stance... My dear Alistair, you look like a walking corpse at its worst... Do you now what you need?
Alistair: A good night sleep, I think.
Zevran: I'm afraid that will not be enough, my friend. What you need are more drastic measures. May I propose an Antivan massage?
Alistair: A... massage? From you? No... no, I think I'll pass, you know.
Zevran: But why? It's just a massage. I'm not proposing sex, you know.
Alistair: You're... not? Oh. I thought...
Zevran (in hurt tone): You wound me so, Alistair. What a dirty mind you have. Here I was just thinking of your well being, yes?
Warden: I can stay with you, if you wish. That way he won't try anything.
Alistair: I... am not so sure about this...
Warden: Come on, Ali. Don't you trust me? Aren't we friends? Brothers, sharing the blood and...
Alistair: Oh, all right then.

[after some time, in Zevran's tent, Alistair is lying on his stomach on the bedroll, Warden is sitting next to him, joking about their adventures, while Zevran is massaging Alistair's back.]
Alistar (sniffs): Mmm, what's that smell?
Warden: What smell?
Alistair: It's like... bacon, or something.
Zevran (sniffs): By the Maker, you are right! It is bacon!
Warden: Wynne probably bought some from Bodahn and now she's making the dinner.
Alistair: Mmm, that's great! We didn't have any bacon for months! This dinner will be real treat!
Warden: You have no idea...
Zevran: Oh this dinner we will never forget. Of that I'm sure.

LOL @ Klidi :) I just luv Alistair being the butt of jokes.... today he made my Noble break up with Zev - I only did it coz I want the achievement - but I re-rolled anyway coz I played it out wrong and I died and Im trying to reach a certain level w/out dieing for the xtra thrill Permadeath style but Im not having much luck because my game does not respond to what my mouse tells it in certain combat situations *sighs*  ... so its back to the Kocari Wilds for me tonight...

Also  I read Failed to Fail today - nice work. I luv the interesting way you flash back and forth... I am very curious as to whether or not the "kid" comes round... so Ill have to schedule time to come back and read some more.

Though I don't hate him - but I see him as a younger brother, whiny and annoying, but still a brother, that I wouldn't really hurt. But occassional prank, or a bit of teasing...

I decided to put all my oneshots on my blog here, just to have them all in one place... Ruffled Feathers is now up - Alistair disapproves -30. (It would be -50 if he didn't think it would make him look childish and petty). Though I still say it was his own fault this time!

Failed to Fail - ah, thank you! The first chapter is bit different, because it was originally meant to be just oneshot. The rest of it follows the game, but it's more focused on Zev's inner conflict and development of his relationship with Airam than adventure and action.

@Klidi: Bahaha, nice 'what happened before' bit. XD That was pefect...oh man.
Also, just read "Ruffled Feathers" and it made me giggle. Heehee. I would feel bad for Alistair, but, he's just too cute when he's being teased.

@Sushifer: You're probably right, but, hey, I guess this way everything will be all consolidated? And I thought it might be a little more fair, or...something like that. I dunno. XD See, 'cause this way I'll be motivated to reread/etc. everything thoroughly one more time before picking a winner, since I'll be wanting to come up with some good comments. Or something like that.
Also, hooray! I hope you do! *cheers you on*

Hmmm - I have discovered that many use this FanFiction site - I have always used blogs in the past - most often those provided by the game itself.

Do you recommend them as opposed to a blog site? What are the benefits? I see there is a thing called BetaReaders - I definately need one of those I think :)

@Tryynity: Heh, I think all characters have inner conflict! Well, all good/interesting ones, anyway. ;) (Though, of course, sometimes it's tricky to find.)

Are you talking about Fanfiction.net?  The advantage of that site is that basically anyone browsing there is there specifically to read fanfiction (and they might feel like reading specifically Dragon Age fanfiction, and go to that section). The stories are compiled in to searchable lists (with summaries, main characters, and other important info, as I'm sure you've seen if you've checked the site out) that users can sort through to find things. So, it's sort of a way to increase your readership (I can log on there and search for, say, stories with Zevran as a main character), and ideally receive more comments and constructive criticism through the reviews feature (not that that always happens, but). I've never used their beta readers feature, so I can't say anything about it. I assume it's sort of a way of connecting you up with someone who can beta your stories?

There are several other sites I know of that people to post their fanfic to, but I myself (not that I've posted any Dragon Age fanfiction, yet) use Fanfiction.net and Deviantart.com (which is not precisely ideal for fanfiction, but, eh, I post everything there).

A question for you guys: how much of your personal in-game canon do you tweak in your writing? That is, how much do you change your warden's playthrough when it actually comes to writing it down?

For instance, in the actual game, my Mahariel is a duel wielding warrior, because well, I love duel wielding spec. But as it makes no sense for a Dalish man to be so proficient with blades, I basically write him as an archer with some minimal dagger skill. I mean, why would you train your hunters to be warriors?

Because people who are good at fighting in close quarters are very useful. Someone has to protect the archers and keeper in case something gets through, and the Dalish do make swords, axes and shields for fighting. :)

I don't think you should worry about a dual-wielding Dalish at all. In fact, Ariane, a Dalish companion in Witch Hunt, *is* a dual-wielding warrior.

And then there's the matter of my main warden's name. It was given to him at the last minute because I couldn't think of anything else satisfactory and quite liked the sound of it. Only later did I realise that it's also the name of an a character in another fantasy world, albeit a fairly unknown one. It's not massively elvish sounding, either.

Hehe, in really old fanfics that have never been published I had that problem. :) Since then I've gone for unique names. In fanfic I don't know that it really matters so much if your Warden is named Aragorn, but it's something I would change for fear of people laughing at me. XD

I've been referring to him simply as The Warden in my internet-published fic so far, but when I start my planned play-through fic, he's going to have to have a name. My dilemma is whether the name he's got is unknown enough that no-one will notice, or whether I should give him a new, better name. Also, it would feel quite odd renaming him after I've been referring to him as one thing in my head for so long. Anyone got any opinion on what I should do? >.<

One fic I did for Ultima I hadn't decided on a name for my PC, and people were referring to her as the Avatar (her ingame title). I got pretty far in before anyone called her by name, and if anyone noticed they didn't say anything. I had a name in my head I'd been using for my game, but didn't want to use it for the fic and chose a different one. I got used to it fairly quickly, if that helps. :)

@Tryynity - The benefit of Fanfiction.Net is definitely exposure, I think. It's extremely popular (largest ff site on the net?), the category system enable people to find stuff they want to read about really easily, and if you're curious about the popularity of your work or which chapters in a long story are doing better, you get daily stats on how many people (and from which countries) visit your various fics. Unfortunately the site has a few quirks and formatting bugs, so it's not perfect. People used to complain about it in the Fanfiction Sucks thread every time something went BOING.

Good times. ;)

@Shadow/Sushifer: Heh, in pondering/fumbling around with a possible fic I've had a similar problem. Not with my Warden herself, but Dog, who I had named Atlas on a whim. When I thought about writing stuff, I realized that "atlas" probably does not exist as a word in Thedas...yet I was so stuck to it. Conveniently, "atlas" is only one letter away from "alas," the Dalish word for dirt (think a game of "telephone" for how to get from one to the other). (Obviously, this character is not Dalish. She is, however, a human noble who went through a phase of obsession with the Dalish in her youth, which I think can explain why she tried to use a Dalish word in naming her dog. He is also important enough to the story, I think, that he could not just go unnamed.)
I've considered changing the name altogether, even so, but I kind of like the idea of this character, as a young girl, trying (and failing) to name her mabari Dirt (which she would totally do, with utmost affection).

Sorry to butt in. Was just reminded of my similar experience. >_>

@Bitenomnom I like your approach as well, though- it's always nice to get feedback on your work and know someone's been reading your little offerings. Oh, and I forgot to say- I really loved those pictures! I like the look of your warden. She looks like a tough kinda lady ;) Alos, I got a prompt entry all written and finished yesterday, huzzah! Now I need to find time to actually type it up.

@SoLD Ah, that's reassuring, and a good point. He's probably going to end up swinging back to blades. And I'm tipping more and more towards renaming- still not entirely sure is it's worth it, though.

And a newb question: what does ToP stand for?

@Sushifer: Oh, good. X3 Glad you think it's a good approach. Re: my Warden: She would resent being called a lady, I think, but yeah, tough is the word. Haha. Glad you like her look...I've thought about it a lot. Actually, after so much drawing her as short, muscular, and flat-chested, when I play her in Origins (am replaying her story) and see the chick running around on-screen, I have a hard time remembering they're the same person! I hope to eventually write a story about her...on principle, if nothing else, so she can balance out all the way less strange HNFs with her emotional ineptitude, gender ambivalence, not-prettiness, etc. (Also, she totally has a real serious kinda thing for Anora...)
Hooray! Can't wait to read your entry. :)
And I believe ToP stands for "Top of Page."

Oh, please write it! She sounds very intriguing. Crush on Anora? Gender ambivalence? I already love her. Posted Image
I can't stand all doll-like Couslands whose only purpose in life is to marry the prince, and who even during the blight obviously spend hours every day just to keep their hair silky and shiny.

@Sushifer: just choose whatever feels more natural to you. If you can't identify yourself with the character, the readers won't be able to do it either. if you feel the name works and you're already used to it and that's how you think about the character in your head, then stick to it.
As for canon, I have many Wardens, but only one is Airam Surana, ice mage. The story follows that playthrough in most important things, but with many changed details (I skip most of sidequests in my fanfiction, because many just don't make any sense, for example). It's even so that even if I start another mage, they almost never use ice spells - those are just for Airam! Posted Image

ToP indeed does stand for Top of Page. The old ZevThread (where I spent entirely too much time posting) wasn't too much for picture spamming except on Fridays, where it was all picture spam, mainly sexy pictures with Zevran's head photoshopped in somewhere, often covering the naughty bits. Anyway, it somehow became tradition that if your post was the very first on a page, you posted a picture of Zevran. (the old Alistair thread used to do that as well, but there was a lot more pic spam in that thread).

Bitenomnom, your warden sounds awesome! Please please please write about her. She sounds like the ultimate anti-Cousland. It'd be great to read about a character who would be such an antidote to the normal HNF populating fanfic. Unique takes on Origins are always so refreshing! I do try to shepherd my main Mahariel away from Gary-Stu-dom, as ridiculous and arbitrary as Mary Sue as a definition has become (seems like any likeable character can be accused of being a sue these days) but hey, I get stupidly paranoid about that sort of thing. So far this has boiled down to making him a 4"11 awkward, lonely little grump whose main method of coping with a world he doesn't really understand is to stare, hard, at everyone :P

Hah, I have a bit of a renaming problem with Dog as well. I always call him Rufus... because I have this thing about naming all dogs that I am able to name Rufus. No matter how big or tough they are. Actually, especially if they're big and tough. It all started when I called my soft-toy dog Rufus when I was about seven, and then named my harvest moon dog after him... and it spiralled from there. Though considering names in Thedas are lifted from all manner of cultures and times, Rufus might not sound too out of place, after all.

I'll have to remember about ToP. I have a stupidly large collection of screenshots, after all.

And now I should really stop mucking about and actually finish my entry!

@Klidi: Teehee, thanks! Glad to know I’m not crazy for thinking stuff like that is way more awesome than the typical Cousland type. Thank you for the encouragement…it really really does help me to know that there are people who would be interested in reading her story! In truth I have a little written up…but I’m still deciding a few things, so I don’t want to post anything yet.

@Sushifer: D’awww, thank you—like I said to Klidi, it is seriously really nice to hear that people think she sounds interesting, and that also majorly contributes to me thinking that writing stuff for her would be a good idea. X3 It’s interesting because she wasn’t “designed” to be an anti-Cousland but she definitely happens to have turned out that way. Of course I think I’ve only read one thing written by you (so far!) but I don’t recall thinking of your character as a Gary Stu. (Heh, “stare really hard” is my Warden’s main form of coercion. Or…main form of communication in general, really…)

Heh, I’d named all previous mabari “Bearclaw” because I like naming animals after food. (I have a praying mantis named Cupcake. And a lungfish named Truffles. No joke.) Rufus might not actually be too out of place, you’re right. Wikipedia tells me it’s from a Latin word, so in Thedas, maybe you could argue it’s Tevinter? Heh.

Yes! Go! Finish your entry! Do you need more time? I s’pose the deadline could be extended by a little if you need it.

Prompt: Sneaking Past Dragons
"A high dragon? We're not planning on...actually fighting it, are we? Couldn't we just...sneak around it?"

Okay, I admit it, I have in mind hilarious slapstick comedy moments as Zevran, the Warden, and anyone else
who comes along with them attempt to sneak past a slightly less favorably placed Andraste on the mountain top in Haven. But perhaps, if that doesn't float your boat, Zev (or someone close to him) is sneaking past dragons of the more serious, metaphorical sort?
Basically...anything involving Zevran and the sneaking past of dragons, however literally or figuratively you wish to interpret it. The sneaking need not be successful. =p

Phew, I made it just in time yet again! Sneaking an entry in at the last minute is apparently becoming a habit.
