Klidi, I totally agree! That's part of why I love reading fanfiction, to see different ways people view or write the same character. Sometimes, you can get more insight into the character(s) involved just by comparing, for instance, how Zevran differs from one story to another. (If that makes any sense.) And you'd expect there'd be lots of different Zevrans, as Sialater said, because in theory the Warden affects Zevran every bit as much as he affects him/her.

I also agree with you, Corker -- "the story behind the story" stuff is so much fun to think about/work with. I love it when people navigate around/explain away effects of the game mechanics, etc., with their own ideas/explanations.

They are different, but they are all still Zevrans. Imagine they would found out about existence of other verion - Zev wouldn't like it

(what can I say - yes, I'm obsessed with Zev )

Edit: yay, top of the page. So here's Zev giving some bad headache to a high dragon

Phew, finally caught up with the thread. Don’t mind me while I try and reply to more things than is perhaps entirely wise or sane.

@Corker On the subject of writing smut: that’s rather reassuring to hear. Perhaps I should try my hand at it. I mean, I do sort of fancy it, but crippling self doubt and embarrassment hold me back. It’s not that I’m awkward about the subject matter itself- far from it, heh- but awkward about my ability to write something that it’s so easy to do badly. Maybe I should try filling some kmeme prompts? I could envisage that being a nice, uh, smut-training ground, so to speak, as the anonymity would give a cover to my shame, should it end up being genuinely dreadful.

On the subject of whether Zev would spend the night or not: a lot of excellent points have been made which I don’t need to reiterate. I suppose it depends on how *intimate* you view actually sleeping with someone in the literal sense to be. I know I view it as in some ways more, uh, intimate than sex, especially where someone like Zevran is concerned- the implications of trust and affection it carries wouldn’t be something he’d be very comfortable with, I’d think, but then I can be rather soppy. I’m sure he would stay the night with a lover if he viewed it appropriate, but I imagine he’d rather avoif it. I can’t see that he’d sleep very well, for one thing, as an assassin would probably be super-alert so wouldn’t be able to very restful when so exposed.

I can’t picture him staying with the warden initially, however, because unlike his other conquests. The warden is someone he knows he won’t be able to get away from. It’s much easier to feign affection and be all lovey-dovey to get into someone’s pants when you know you’re never going to see them again. But he’s bound to the warden, more or less. So if he feigns affection to keep them happy, he’s going to be stuck with them thinking he’s genuinely affectionate, and all the horrible complications and general veering towards all the things he is not comfortable with, that that entails. Hence why he keeps the warden at arm’s length for as long as possible.

But of course, as you’ve all so wisely pointed out, half the fun of fandom is exploring things from your own point of view, and building your own personal interpretations, so that’s just my opinion. I mean, I think one of the reasons dragon age is the first fandom I’ve been actively involved in and actively read fanfic for is because the warden is such a beautiful blank slate. The main character can be whoever you want them to be, in turn leading to completely different stories which will effect the established characters in different ways. I find it fun to see where other people take their wardens, and where that in turn takes the other characters.

Oh, and SoLD, a monthly unlimited prompt might work quite well.

Also, when a thread starts bandying about David-Bowie-isms, I know I’m in the right place : )

Seeing as I'm absolutely GREAT at overthinking things, one thing did occur to me about whether Zevran actually sleeps with the warden. Their first time, the after sex talk happens in the morning just before it's time for them to go which would make me think they had spent the entire night together.

ejoslin wrote...

Sresla, I just ignore that as the camp looks like it's night even in Leliana's after sex talk where it is clear that it's morning. Plus there are other dialogs from camp where companions say it's time to move on. I write it off as a graphics limitation.

And yes, Zaxarus, slam-bam-thank-you-ma'am is just, in my mind, not being a good lover, no matter how much fun the slam-bam part is ;)

Both very good points I forgot about and thinking about it - it really does depend on how you approach the material.

I guess I lean toward recapturing the writer's character rather than my own - being an actor/director thats what Im used to - interpreting scipts/characters/scenes.

If I want to write a new character I can do that - I have had an Zevran type character sitting in the wings for 4 years - after I practise with Zev a little I may actually do something with him.

I did not know Fan Fiction was an actual genre until this thread LOL yet I have been writing it for ages.

Personally, I don't think Zevran would mind 'spending the night' with a newly bedded Warden so long as talk about feelings doesn't ensue, since we've all seen how he reacts when 'love' is brought up. That'd probably make him retreat. From an assassin's perspective, he has no need to fear the Warden attempting to kill him in his sleep. I mean, they already had their chance. And there are good reasons to stay the night if such a thing would please the Warden.

A Zevran who thinks he is falling in love, on the other hand, is one I'd see being cagey about intimacy. At least for a while. :)

But I also agree that the kind of Warden we're dealing with should have an impact on his behaviour. After all, a Warden who told him to get out of their tent is a Warden Zevran probably wouldn't be spending the rest of the night with. ;)

@Tryynity - I was writing fanfiction long before I realised such a term existed too. ;) I was astonished when I realised other people do it too. And it can be posted online!

LOL yea its awesome :)

I guess I had in my head - the guy that leaves b4 dawn because of the message "this is not serious - its physical" - In my head he hangs around until everyone is totally spent maybe even waits for the partner to fall asleep in his arms and then retreats.

- however its true his first conversation reinforces that but they did both emerge together I believe in that scene and has given me something to reconsider.

Thats why I luv discussions - other ppl see stuff often you overlooked.

I'm so glad to see this thread being semi-active now. <3 I always worry that while I'm off being sick, the fandom will fade off and I'll have missed everything. (DA is/was my first big fandom, I usually geek over obscure and old things with like twenty fans total.)

Have a WIP, Zev-thread. I've missed drawing Zev something feirce. The shoulder on our left (his right) is 100% a placeholder because it was better than a blank space for now.

Image IPB

As always, the tattoo comes in after shading!

...Did someone mention writing smut? Kmeme is great for that. I'm not very anon on there and never have been, so I have to worry about everything I do being crap, but I can absolutely appreciate the attraction of actual anonymity on there, haha.

But it would totally work for cutting your teeth, so to speak. I imagine there's a metric f**k-ton of unfilled prompts at this point.

Indeed you should, if you think it would be fun (and you are 18+)! The delicious link archive is somewhat hosed at the moment, making finding old prompts of interest rather difficult; you used to be able to go in and look and see what requests were relevant to which characters and, ah, interests. Now it's not quite so easily searchable. But you can always browse til something pops at you.

There is even a handy-dandy How-To Guide (largely authored by Yours Truly, if I do say so myself).

:innocent:

That was you? Bwahaha, not surprised.

I'm kind of scared to look at kmeme now. How many mods have we burned out since my last health-splatter? :( I feel bad that I can never help anon-link, but I'd burn out so fast.

WIP update! Herp derp. I have an idea that will involve a hand or two, but I think it'll look good when it's done. Working on dat face first.

Image IPB

Edit: Turning my brightness up briefly, he looks kind of orange in the darker shades. That'll get fixed later. This is in photoderp, so I'll be plastering like seventy billion color-shifts over the top when the shading is down.

With dimscreen knocking my screen down 50% on top of it already being at its dimmest setting, things can look a lot different on my end at this stage. XD

I spam WIPs because I'm useless for discussion! <3

@Corker: I've also been pondering it, off and on, so thank you for that link in case I muster up the courage to actually write something in that vein...eventually.

@Aroihkin: Oooh! Pretty. I like seeing WIPs. (And I admire the insane amount of patience you must have.)

I used to spam Zevthread with WIPs a lot, but the crack-down on on-topic-ness means I don't do it when Zev isn't implicitly in the picture, now. And even then I don't as much as I used to.

Right now it doesn't look like anything much different than what I'd do in Paint, but I'm intending to rough up his skin and such. We'll see if I can pull it off. XD The WIP is at a stage where I'll let a bigger version be seen, so:

Image IPB

Link: 1500x1500

The actual size I'm working at is 2500x2500 at 600 dpi, because I'm an overachiever that way. (And it lets me scribble with my mouse and still mostly stay on-target, lulz.)

Thinking of having his finger/part of his hand in front of his face doing a 'shh' motion. We'll see. :3

I totally envy anyone that can draw/paint etc - seriously I tried animating stick figures and I failed :(

I did enjoy DAZ that was manipulating models into poses - that the limit of my art work though.

So big /cheer to all the thread artists :D

So just like I did in High School when I was supposed to be doing homework/studying Ive been wasting time when I should be writing hahahha

Here is some randomness - if you can come up with a suggestion pls add it Im curious and sadly out of touch of late of actors on offer.

Imaginary Cattle Call for Casting Zevran Character ?

I offer you : Andy Whitfield (sadly deceased but since this is not real...), Brad Pitt, Chris Hemworth, Young Jamie Durie Manpower Dayz *sweats*), Paul Walker, Jake Gyllanhaal.

My top choice is prolly Jake - obviously makeup artistry is needed.

Im interested in other ppls - click on this pic to take you to slideshow of selection

The same problem i have. I read some nice fanfiction-scenes in the last days and wondered if i could do similar writing. I'm more the "dim-out"-type as you could see in my "first-time" prompt. The first night of Nemain with another woman, but you don't read anything about whats going on in the tent. And to be honest i regret that much. A similar problem - but enhaced twofold - i had in my roleplaying groups. To describe such thing not in writing but speaking, 4-6 people listening, some of then your friends, some of them pairs ... frightening.

@Corker
Thank you for the guide-link. I seems to be very interesting.

@Tryynity -- Zev's features aren't very Caucasian, IMO.

...Oh god, I knew this person on Aion who was a dead ringer for Zevran. I wonder if that thread is still up on the old unofficial Aion forums... *goes digging*

Heh when I was writing my first smut (of total number of two :D - three, if you count the 'fail sex' story) I was writing almost 20 hours. And I mean actual writing, without the 'research'. Before I started, I've read every single smut story that included Zevran, both on FFN and kmeme, to learn terms. When I posted it, I was as nervous as when I handed over my first essay at uni.

I'm still surprised people in fact like it - even months after it was published, it's still between my stories that are most popular. (But not on kmeme. It's interesting - the more my story is ignored at kmeme, the more popular it is on FFN, and vice versa. Has any of you noticed that as well?)

And now my 100th reviewer - I offered her to choose the topic of the next oneshot, as a prize, and she asked for Zev and Air 'first sucessful' time. But I'm dreading it. I don't know how to write it without making it sound the same as the previous one.

Edit: Aroihkin, nobody cares that the threads like the one about Teyrn Loghain are totally off topic... so even if Zev is not in the picture... but it would be a picture of his most populer lover (I mean Tannu, of course), I'm sure nobody could protest about that. *hint hint*

I don't feel too bad posting it since they've posted it to a bunch of forums themselves. When I first saw that pic I was like daaaaaamn, hi Zevran!

They were really nice, too. One of the few people I'll say that about from that MMO, lol.

Although that's just going off sheer looks, and from one photo, so.

Popularity on ffnet vs kmeme: part of that is probably people who would be commenting on kmeme are instead commenting on ffnet. :) It's generally considered to be more 'permament' feedback that way. :D

And I haven't gotten around to writing Tannu and Zev's first time, either, hahaha. *is lame*

Re: edit: ...LOL, well, you'd be surprised. Although back in the day when I filled pages of Zevthread with David Bowie picture spam, I was probably just a wee bit less on topic. XD

And I don't know about most popular, especially nowadays. LOL I'm surprised people still remember me outside of my BSN friendslist.

Here, while I'm being off topic-ish, since they're from fics that feature Zevran:

(Click for devart links.)

Alleyana Tabris from Immovable Object. My neglected Zevran het fic with a physically disabled Warden because no one was doing it at the time, and I'm a bit of a gimp m'self. XD (In the disabled way, not the leather hood way!)

I know, right? They model professionally, IIRC. I'm so not surprised.

And you didn't miss much. Aion had a ton of promise, but NCWest let the community do anything it wanted, and the community apparently wanted to cannibalize itself. It turned into complete and absolute trash. Like... roommate being threatened by people saying they'd come to our house with a shovel, trash.

Really wasn't a pleasant place, overall.

My only MMO now is *hangs head* WoW. But I adore my Death Knight on there something fierce. I loved the Spiritmaster playstyle from Aion above all, but I love the DK lore/canon enough to not miss Aion too much.

In fact, Kal (my DK) is partially responsible for my brain working on creative stuff again. He cracked the wall between me and art, and Zev seems to have stuck a knife in the crack and is widening it, lol.

Image IPB

(My WIP of that character.) I'm pretty much just on WoW to PVP at this point, though. I really hate the PVE on that game.

Er, for those who don't play MMOs: I beat up other players and take their lunch money. Or rather, I plant my guild's banner on their corpse and then resume the beatings. I suspect they like it.

Edit: Oh snap, see how easy I go off topic? Here's a Zev to make up for it.

Image IPB

I really don't miss how my graphics looked on the old laptop. Nor that I didn't know how to take screencaps through dimscreen without it darkening everything... though that might be a good thing, considering. XD

I can even tie (hurr) Zev to my MMO rambling: I had the name Zevran on Aion on Israphel, and I have the name Arainai for a rogue on Wyrmrest Accord (WoW). I had to make him look more like his concept art than his in-game art, though, there were zero faces that even came close. But the Tannusen on WoW is an even rougher aproximation, so... what can ya do, right? Not the most customization-friendly MMO.

I bought a lifetime sub to LotRO (Lord of the Rings Online), DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) and EQ2 (Everquest2) I'm still undecided about Bioware's Starwars, currently Im back to playing by myself - even my last visit in LotRO land was all solo to level 40 and then I stopped to play Dragon Age and Mass Effect

Waiting to play DA2 and then will look at Assasins Creed - Revelations when its more affordable - most things come down to finances these days.

In the meantime I have to get into Toolset - if I can manage it, it will most likely keep me busy for long time I am hoping it will be a creative medium I can really get into.

I pretty much always play rogue builds - you can get really creative in DDO with character building a flaw of mine.

I have a Hawk Girl Build (favoured soul), a Kitara build (Water Monk), Azula build (Fire monk/sorc), an Iron Man build (Warforged) you get the picture LOL totally unplayable at high level with the UBER crowds ahaha but for me gaming is about fun not UBERness but each to their own heh :)

and sometimes the softer graphics is nicer except how it dulls his beautiful eyes....

I played and filmed on low graphics in Dragon Age for so long before realising - I was so mad when I found out... I have to go and re-shoot and then remake one of my videos.... one day ahaha

My old laptop wasn't capable of running on anything but minimum graphics settings, and even then only barely sometimes. XD This machine (named Zev!) handles it much better. It also handles art and such better. :3

Bad graphics is... bearable, I suppose. I'm more tolerant of it than I ought to be, but usually I don't have a choice anyway, so why get wrapped up in it? But now that I have the choice, I'd never run it at those settings. XD I'm house-bound and I have to run everything very, very dark to begin with. (I can't handle much light, windows are blocked off and etc -- my screen is very, very dark.) What I do get to see, I want to look pretty.

Although lower graphics settings helps the Zev cameo in DA2, I've found. I'm still mad at the lack of a DA2 toolset. I know a lot of people are perfectly capeable of fixing him, if we had the toolset, but I'd probably take a crack at it too. I certainly have his features memorized enough. >_>

Though with the base elven mesh being so weird, who knows. Ffffff-- still mad at the lack of toolset.

Edit: WIP update! Hair's not done, but since I usually put it off until last, I decided to start tackling it a bit earlier this time.

Image IPB

Link: 1500x1500

...I should probably stop procrastinating on that shoulder someday, huh?

Also, I hate (drawing) blonds. XD Though Zev's hair isn't half the nightmare Tannu's is. I curse the day I decided Tannu would be a platinum blond. I should have given him black, brown, or red hair and saved myself years of trouble, but nooo. (I didn't do art back then. Silly me. I HAD NO IDEA.)

Blonde and Silver (Platinum) are my favorites - although my Bard/Rogue/ has light brown locks. My drows almost always have silver hair and dark skinned - except my two bad ones they have jet black hair and red eyes - very cliche but oh well.

Im liking your Zevs and Tannu's - your artwork has a distinct quality about it - Im not sure what it is exactly - you definately appear to have your own unique style too - I think i would spot it somewhere and know right away you did it

Oh, I like them fine, just not drawing them. XD

I have a method down for Zev in Paint, but not so much for photoderp. And Tannu's hair has never been anything but a pain in either program. It would be less of a pain if it was actually white or silver, but no. It's 'Marilyn Monroe' platinum blond, so it has to have this weird balance of greys and yellows and awegsdgasd I hate coloring it. XD

Image IPB

(Even then, if Tannu's hair wasn't long and straight it would be less of a pain. And when it's tied back? Dear god, I'm borked.)

And thanks! It's the only style I can draw in, so I'm glad it seems to work. XD

Someone did a FanFict with a mute girl - I read only briefly - but the idea spawed by the fact you cannot speak in game - I thought that was an awesome idea.

My son is disabled he has Downs and at 14 - Sandal can speak more words than he can - my daughter who is 8 and are I endeared to Sandal in many ways and giggle when he says "Enchantment"because he is our "MickyD" character. That's his nickname btw ....

A mute Warden is a pretty neat idea, yeah. :3

(( Edit: snipped out the TMI. :P ))

Alley's disabilities are all injury-based. Or stubborness-based, depending on how you look at it. XD Immovable Object was/is as much about writing Zev falling for someone he doesn't necesarilly find physically attractive as much as anything, with writing a disabled "main" character as a bonus. Plus, it's a good storytelling device and gives me plenty of excuses to shove them at each other, lol.

I really need to resume work on that story. But, you know. Long-form, sequential plot is the hardest thing for me with my health problems. Even at its plottiest, S&S has the advantage in that I don't have to write it in order. Not that S&S is particularly plotty, other than setting up specific things I want to have happen.

(S&S amusingly got started because of my annoyance at the popular idea that smut is useless and can't tell a story. Pfft.)
