OH MY GOD THE PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA IN FLORENCE, I'VE -BEEN THERE-!!!! *rabid seizure*
*cough* ... that cast bronze... wait is cast? All right, brain fart, anyways, it's Perseus and it's AMAZING, but right to it's ... right I think it is there's a copy of the Rape of the Sabine women by my FAVOURITE EVER ... All right second favourite ever sculptor that REALLY bears linking (I swear I took literally 20 of my own pictures of this) (Note: Nudity, but "rape" means KIDNAP here, not what you think)
Sabines I wish I coulda found the other angle where you can see the hand on her hip, the sculptor (Giambologna) actually carved the divets where his hand squeezes her. It's amazing, and only Bernini is a better sculptor in my mind.
You guys should probably talk about fluffy bunnies or something or I'm going to go stuff myself in a suitcase and mail myself back to Rome.
edit: OMG I totally got distracted off my original point which was to say the "steroids" was a type of romanticism (lowe-case "R", not to be confused with "Romanticism" ie the "Romantic period"). Incidentally the Greeks, Romans and all of their emulators (I think that Perseus statue is circa, uh, idk, 1600 or so) didn't ONLY make people "Beautiful" (very muscular with very tiny... packages, which was pretty because it indicated a level of sophistication I suppose, separating us from the animals) in the sense of ripped, but they had a style called "Verism" where they made them look crazy old and wizened so the senators and whatnot would be more respected!
editedit: I LOVE ITALY
editeditedit: Also, I have a picture of the place where Savonarola was burned AND hung (SIMULTANEOUSLY, HOW AWESOME IS THAT?) in the square near the city hall, and pictures of the Medici palace. /drool
