I think Antiva is supposed to be pseudo-Italian; it was first named 'Calabria' in development (they changed it when they learned that there really was a Calabria), there's a town named 'Rialto' (like the bridge in Venice) and 9 times out of 10, the place with the merchants and the assassins is Italian-flavored in fantasy. *insert standard disclaimer about how Orlais isn't France, Ferelden isn't Scotland, etc etc etc*

@Nekkid people, maybe I should have posted more context. XD Tryyn's right - the Gauls (and other Celts) were infamous for running into battle stark naked. IRL, not just as an artistic convention, if we can believe the Roman accounts...

Ahh - I thought the contries represent were like -

Ferelden is Pommie (England)
Starkhaven is Scotland
Rivain is Spain
Antiva is Italy
Orlais is France
Dales was Ireland
Tevinter is weird - I know its Latin based language

I don't think it's quite so cut and dry, because I know that Nevarra is supposed to basically be Rome, but people from there are brown-skinned and speak with British accents. If I had to make a list:

Ferelden:  England (+other influences, not really sure which precisely)
Starkhaven: Scotland
Rivain: Spain/Gypsy/South African
Antiva: Italy/Spain blend
Orlais: France dominantly, touches of Venice
Dales: Ireland/ fjord-lands
Tevinter: Greece/Rome/High-Gothic Northern France
Nevarra: Rome/England/North Africa
Qunari: Middle East or Russia
Anderfels: Germany
Dwarves: Americas/Mayans

It looks like above Anderfels there's jungles...

Anyway, yeah the thing about just plopping a list and drawing lines is that Gaider uses a mix of architecture and languages and art indicative of the people and makes each city up by mashing it against something else. Like, yes, Orlais sounds exactly like Louis XIV's France, with the Neo-classical austerity but they also have descriptions of the lay of the land that makes it sound like Venice or maybe Florence. Not to mention, being the center of the Chantry, it's got to at least be inspired by Rome, Italy in some sense.  Also the languages tend to be nonsensical mixes of two other languages.  The "Antivan" we've seen is a mashup of Italian and Spanish for instance.

I see less of a list and more of a dartboard and five beers.

Yes - Dani - you are right. That was just the closest I could relate them - I have a tendancy to classify everything simply.

My biggest concern has always been Zevran's origin's influence. After reading some things on the forum I began to worry I had it wrong.

I suspected the Qunari may be middle-eastern in influence because of their black & white approach to their religion and very anti-capitalist.

Oh and you have to bear in mind with me - France is just France to me LOL  England is just England.  I could maybe expand that a little to medieval england - medieval france. Depending what movies Ive watched Image IPB

I have no clue who ruled when and what influenced what at which time - I did not study History - or to be truthful Switched off during High School totally, so you could say I learned little past 6th gradeImage IPB  school was too Image IPB . Outside the window much more interesting to me Image IPB

However I do find all this stuff interesting nowadays - so Im glad you guys share it.

Hooray, I'm actually getting to spend time on a computer what with it coming up to Christmas! Hopefully I can catch up on the thread and be a bit more of an active contributor again :) I've got plenty of half-finished Zev-art, to start with...

Funnily enough, pretty much how I thought of them in my head, but as you say, Dani, really they're a mishmash of countries, as most fantasy countries are. (How original a country feels depends on how many real countries it's based on, in my experience.) But it's still easier for me to refer to Ferelden as 'basically England' and Orlais as 'basically France' when discussing 'em with people who are less familiar with their actual names. Interestingly, though, a lot of people seem to equate Ferelden primarily with Scotland. Dunno if it's cultural or something- when I heard about the Orlesian invasion for the first time in-game my brain just screamed NORMANS, but I suppose it'd just as validly evoke Scotland to more people, what with the ever-pervading influence of Braveheart et al.

Bahaha, I learnt about *that* effect of steroids eavesdropping on my classmates when I was sixteen: 'yeah, since he's come off steroids, he's got... bigger.' You pick up all kind of interesting things if you're nosy XD

Decisions, Decisions

Someone
has to make a decision. It may be a serious one, influencing his whole
life, or a difficult one, like what dress to wear this evening?
Zevran
wants to help, maybe in the best interest of the decision-maker,
perhaps in his own interest. The decision-maker may be a companion or
any other NPC, but NOT an in-romance-with-Zevran Warden (but the warden
may be the theme of the decision).

Variant: Zevran has to make a decision and some other one wants to help.

Bonus
Points: If the other part is someone who would normally not ask Zevran
for help and/or the other part is not aware of Zevran influencing him.

Time Taken:  1/2 hour or so? 20 min?  Not long.
My Prompt Count: 1

Oops

this is my lame entry for this prompt.  but i want a bonus
point, because sten doesn't usually ask zevran for help with decisions.
true, no?  although the other person was supposed to be oblivious to
zevran's 'help,' not the other way around....  oh well.  ::snicker::

Back in the mists of time, one of the devs said something to the effect that Ferelden was like England if the Normans had been kicked out after 80 years, and also that it was loosely based on 13th cen (IIRC) Scotland.

Now... those two things, to me, are not the same (although I can see where there are similarities between them).  But that's why Scotland keeps coming up.

Yes, well. That's why I said 'in one piece'. Do you have any idea what would Zev do if I allowed anyone to 'only' maim his beloved little Warden??? But - *checks if Zevran is not listening* go ahead and torture him, just make it something that a proper abomination with amazing healing skill can fix. That way it will be more challenge anyway, no? Chopping of different parts of body is too boring. Image IPB

@ Kyerra is rounded enough by that time - so it would be hard to get her wrong.

Im excited about this .... DO IT !

PS oh yea - I hope Zev is not doing the sadistic role (unless he is under the influence of Bloodmagic/enchantment/whatever)

@klidi: you *did* say 'in one piece' OR 'lifelong trauma.' oh, you only meant physical trauma?
::goes down the list of who gets maimed::
no problem!

anyway, don't worry. i'm really too nice. the wardens are WAY too clever to get stuck in any jigsaw traps.

So the first idea I had, the more I thought it over, wasn't really a decision at all, but some advice given.

So my fill has two parts: Part 1 is the entry, in which Zevran gives some advice on an actual decision to an NPC in a slightly AU DA2 variant.  Part 2 is my original idea.

Speaking of the Zantas!

I'd say we have about 1/3 of our gifts exchanged, and I've heard from around another 1/3 of our participants that they are hard at work. There's a couple of folks I haven't heard from who are probably *also* hard at work, but I'll be sending out some pings tomorrow to check in, so I can call up our pinch-hitters if necessary.

okay, i have bad news... no saw crossover got worked on today, because  THAT IDIOT--- ::shines a blaring spotlight on zevran::

zevran:  ::jumps up and hides his hands behind his back... not that he was DOING anything!::

because THAT IDIOT was begging me at 3am for me to write the torchwood crossover scene where jack teaches him how to handle a gu--  um... how to shoo--- erm... the proper way to handle a firearm!!!

zevran:  sadistic tiger goddesses are very susceptible to--
::GODSMITE!::
the pile of ash that was formerly zevran:  ::groan::

and my brain obsessed over it ALL DAY... ::glares at brain::  because that scene segues right into the scene with the hot jack/zevran action.  HOWEVER!  ::restrains tryyn and tk:: i still have not *written* the explicit hot jack/zevran action.  i still haven't figured out how to make it... not too explicit.  BUT.... there is now some not-too-explicit hot jack/zevran snogging and foreplay.

so.  it's currently in the 'as of yet not in order' thread here.  i can't seem to link to a part of a thread.  so scroll.  there are two parts, but they segue one into the other.

i need sleep.  i need a brain transplant.  something...

Okay I went and read it - its great. The right amount of explictness still - my imagination is good enough for the rest :D

I like how it hightlights Bannon & Zevran's relationship and the freedom Bannon allows him to be him. As I said real love doesnt claim ownership - doesnt take but gives.

Kyerra & Zevran had the same agreement when he left for Antiva - they both knew each other well and did not want to change the other.

Could I suggest over the Christmas break we do a Festive Prompt

- A DAO Christmas/Hannukah/Whatever you celebrate this time of year - to be completed by Mid Jan or end of Jan.

With a difference - I would like all the thread to judge - by awarding stars 1-5 * Boo & ***** Excellent!

Or better still smilies:

Image IPB Puke city -2 point, Image IPB Oh dear -1 point Image IPB Needs work 1 point, Image IPB Satisfactory  2 points,Image IPB Nice work 3 points, Image IPB Good 4 points Image IPB Excellent! 5 points

The scorecards are tallied up to decide a winner. Prize undecided as yet. Im thinking some kind of Festive Zevran pic.
