hmmm I think we agreed we CAN promote our stories here - I promoted FTF, anyway. :D

I had a very difficult week, didn't have much time for fanfiction - read two stories, wrote one review, and wrote 2000 words of the new chapter and then deleted 1800. :D My bosses are unreasonable fools, all four of them. And my tooth broke. On a STRAWBERRY. How pathetic is that? And my dentist said I can come... on August 13th.

I saw your update, Bloodsong and I'm looking forward to read it this evening. I plan to do nothing else today until I finally catch up with your rogues. :D I'm in a desperate need of good stories with Zev!

yeah, klidi, i think one and a half people voted on the issue and said it was okay. lol! i think we should all promote our projects, more often. to keep up to date on everyone.


okay, here's a discussion for the group...

i was snooping around in the different conversations and banter, and i noticed a couple of instances referring to zevran trying to kill the warden, twice. now, when i was playing allie, i wanted to do that -- let him go after the first ambush and have him come back and try it again. buuuut... when i was playing through with allie, i didn't get that option. :/ just recruit him or whack him.

so then i thought... maybe they took it out, because it was too complicated. but then last week... i was snooping zevran's convo again, and i found it! (its only located on the branch where you tell him to turn around and go whack loghain.)

of course, i'd already played allie way past this point. ugh. but i am thinking of going back to an old save and trying that line. BUT... i still don't know for sure that the whole 'second ambush' thing wasn't actually taken out of the game -- because i've never seen hide nor hair of it, in cutscenes, in convos, or anything. (except the banter references to it).

so my question -- and don't post any spoilers please -- is this: has anybody every played through the third option? not recruit, not whack, but let him go? and does he come back? just yes or no. because if he doesn't, there's no reason for me to rewind allie's playthrough. :/ ya know?

In two years on this thread, I have never heard of that happening.

In "Darkspawn Chronicles," Zevran can be found in the Alienage. The implication is that Alistair lets him go, and that's where he ends up.

Oh, that's a lovely picture! And I've read some of your fanfiction, Tellervo, it's quite awesome :D

I've also got a question for the Zev experts -- I've heard he's supposed to say something if you find Ruck without Oghren in the party, so I've left Oghren behind last time I've played that part, but Zev didn't react at all. I suppose it might have been my dialogue choices -- what do you need to say to have Zev react?

"Darkspawn Chronicles" is a DLC set in an alternate universe where the Warden didn't survive. The PC is a hurlock at the siege of Denerim; you kill NPCs and companions, desecrate the vhenadahl tree in the Alienage, etc., and the Archdemon wins in the end.

@Fiacre, it's been forever since I got that scene (but it's a good one); I don't remember exactly what I did. But according to the wiki:

If Zevran is in your party when you talk to Ruck, when you choose the conversation option "I should go," he will advocate a mercy killing, saying it pains him to see Ruck like this. You will have no choice but to agree with him and attack Ruck. Either don't take Zevran along or ask Ruck to trade and exit the conversation with him by closing the trade window if you want to let Ruck live.

Oh, I see. Thank you! I brought up his mother and then promised not to tell her and it exited automatically there, so that's why I didn't get it... Have to try again next time.

i rewound allie and let zevran go.

so far, i've done the circle tower, gone to camp, then on to redcliffe. he hasn't shown back up yet. he did say 'hopefully we'll never meet again' when he left. hmm...

will investigate further.

I've been (slowly) writing again. Black Black Heart is the newest part of the Silver and Scarlet series, and Zevran is a total BAMF in it. It's a touch NSFW due to some very brief dream smut and my Surana's usual style of dealing with highly volatile, dangerous people. (Read: hitting on them.)

(I also wrote highly NSFW Architect porn, Beyond the Pale, because Tannusen is a freak.)

I'm sure there's a bunch I didn't link here, because Zev isn't in all the fills (between Awakening, and my attempts to have Tannu tap half the obscure-but-interesting NPCs of the game). But S&S is about to hit 100k words. My next fill should do it. :3

So that'll be cool.

Meanwhile I finally got a neat idea for a solo!Zevran art. Current state of the WIP at 8 hours 15 minutes:

If all goes well it'll involve lots and lots of knives, some blood, and a halo. Because I need a central and right-above-his-head light source for the idea, so why not.

To answer the thing about Zevran trying to kill the warden twice (very late) -- this does not happen, though the toolset implies that originally the Zevran ambush was the second encounter with him. There are actually two references in the game to the second attempt -- once from Alistair, and one from Zevran (where if a female warden rebuffs him, he answers something like, "Try to kill a woman twice, and she gets all icy."

Anyway, the first attempt was obviously never implemented, but that decision was made after the dialog had been recorded. I'm not sure if it was a resource thing (things were cut because they ran out of resources) or if someone decided that two attempts were just far too much.

And if you let Zevran go, he never comes back. The encounter with Taliesen never happens either, though there is dialog for that scenario (I've thought about adding that back in, actually, but I'm lazy that way).

You know, I'll look to see what it involves -- I don't think it would be too difficult to get it to trigger. There also is dialog with Taliesen for a scenario if you killed Zevran. I'll reinstall the toolset :D  I actually didn't think people would be interested in seeing it as most people who either kill Zevran or let him go wouldn't care about that encounter.

aha! someone who KNOWS!

glad i didnt play the whole game to be disappointed.

i think the main problem would be... that there's no cutscene/encounter/dialogue for a second assassination attempt. uh, or a first one, if the one in the game is supposed to be the second.
the plot flag seems to be intact for letting him go, however. so you can do a check for it to get him to come back, i would think. or hope...

Still digging through scripts here looking for the one that determines Taliesen's appearance conditions -- my eyes start to cross when I look through too much of this stuff :D There are only two additional lines, though. I'll post them here.

If the warden killed Zevran:
Taliesen: Zevran was a friend of mine. I shall enjoy making you pay for his death...

If the warden let Zevran go:
Taliesen: I see Zevran is no longer with you. A pity. I would have enjoyed killing two birds with one stone.

I love the complexity of this relationship.

This actually makes sense. Not just because of the dialogue that got left in, but because Zevran's assassination attempt always felt like a second encounter to me. Call me crazy, but just the way Zevran took the trouble to get a random third party to lure the Warden into a trap and then steps foreward as if his handsome mug is some big reveal, smirks at the Warden as if they're old adversaries, comes crazy prepared in that way one does only when they failed the first time, and cries out "The Grey Warden dies here!" as if the Warden failed to die somewhere else (well, they did, but not by his hand, which the subtext seems to imply) just screams "second encounter" to me.

Not to mention the subtext between Zevran, Warden and the other companions after he wakes up. The way Zevran and the Warden talk to each other contains much more fluidity and familiarity than they would have if they just met face to face for the first time. Not to mention Alistair calls Zevran "the assassin" instead of "an assassin," which implies... well, you get the idea.
