Random, weird idea that came to me today.

I'm not sure how many of you guys have played Rock Band, but for a while, they had a merchandising item where a player could send in images of their RB avatar and have a custom 3D model made and painted.  As I recall, the cost was around $70 (confirmed via a net search; example image at the following link -> http://www.cadalyst....67/Rockband.jpg)

I never ordered one of these, but I suddenly found myself wishing BioWare would do something similar... except I would be more likely to pay $70 for a Zevran figure than for one of my warden

On another note, Pirate!Zevran fic is eating both my brain and my holiday weekend.  It's gotten much larger than I expected -- it's still not completely written, let alone edited...

At some point (not sure if they're still available), you could do these for WoW too.  BUT: they're not painted models; they're "printed in 3D".  You can probably read up on the process somewhere, but yeah, it's some strange alchemy where they're printed in color as they are. 

I desperately wanted ones of my Rock Band band, but they ones I saw when they first started shipping out were... grainy?  I don't know if they've improved the process since then, but anyway! Yes, I was also thinking of these for DA recently. XD  It'd be cool to have your Warden done up as a figure.  One downside I see is that, as far as I know, the data that comprises your character's appearance isn't kept online, as it is for Rock Band (and, I would assume, WoW).  That's how they have the data to make the 3D images.  Even if we submitted the data, ours might include mods that wouldn't be supported by the core game and so on... I wonder if and how that could work...

I will be pleased when (I will not think in terms of if) they put out a Zev action figure. ;D

@Entries: Lots of excellent stuff so far!  Zev-history is always good; people have such different (but not necessarily incompatible) ideas of how the Crows did their work and how Zev fit in to all that..

Ah, I remember now.  You're right.  It was one of those "Z-axis photocopiers", like they use on CSI to reproduce bullets.

This is true.  I've never gone the WoW route, but RB did limit the CC choices, unlike the PC version of DAO.  Not sure if "modded Wardens" would work with the technology or not.  Would be nice though.

Oh man... I would love to have a little Zev to add to my collection of action figures (yes, I'm a total dork).  I'd put him  in a place of honor between Rorschach and Silent Bob on my desktop.

Yep - I just finished typing up the extended and unexpurgated version of The Captive.  I'm going to leave it overnight so I can do an edit with fresh eyes.  I'm planning to post what I have late morning or early afternoon tomorrow.

Fair warning, this thing got really smutty.  I'm not sure of the standard for that in DAO fic -- the last fandom I wrote in extensively was pretty much "anything goes" with the language and level of detail in descriptions.  Has me a bit nervous, to be honest. 

I guess I'll find out soon if I went too far or not

@sarah - again a very interesting interpretation of one of Zevran's stories. I like the conversation between Carlotta and Zevran.
@wildannie - Zevran looks sad, not proud at all. So you think he suffers and was lying about his feelings concerning his missions? I find that interesting.
@caridounette - I like the way you look at seemingly minor actions and events in the game from a roll-playing point of view. How your warden wonders about Zevran, who can easier declare to give his life for you than speak about feelings; and Zevran's sentence: "You really did take everything Taliesen ever had." - which reveals a lot about Zevran's feelings (but the warden is playing dumb ) - well done
@Tanith - I'm glad that I could bring myself to read it, because I like it very much. It's so superbly surprising when he kills her. And I also like the second part about the battle between the two houses and how Talisen and Zevran make their choice for new recruits.
@Hilde - A secret agreement between Howe and Anora brings a completely new perspective into the game. And - I could imagine it, Anora is calculating enough, this snake... I also like how you show the change of Zevran's feelings in the moment when he is facing the death - that explains his whole behaviour during the first dialog - why should he smarm this way if he wants to die?
@Mina - impressing as always how you show the emotions in the faces. Killing Vaughan is a really good example for Zevran as an instrument of fate.
@Konrnichon - *g* I like it that you always find something funny, how "serious" a topic may be.

@ICevoL - I'm looking forward to more "Pirate Zevran".

It's more that its his first mission, I've assumed in the pic that this is the first time that he killed a man which I think would be hard for Zev considering his humanity is still strong years later when he meets the warden.  

Edit: Oh and he's also feeling a bit dirty as seduction was his means to reach him.  

He never tells us of his feelings that day but to have the earring be so important to him, they must have been pretty strong (he may have been proud though)

I just find it interesting, how different a story can be interpreted. I already read several stories about this mission, saw your picture now, and every story und picture allows new perspectives, which are all logic, appropriate and attractive. (I'm just writing my own version, and it's again completely different )

Instrument of Fate

When the beggar boy across the road changed the tune of his lilo flute from a jaunty tune to a haunting melody, Zevran’s eyes opened. He stretched, glanced at the sky to mark how late the hour was, then checked his weapons: two spring-loaded bows that would be good for one shot each, and his ever dependable blades.

Ducking out of the alley he’d been resting in while waiting, he approached the Gilded Horn, one of Antiva’s many cheap inns. Sitting beside the door with his back to the wall was a child, an elf with blond hair, not even ten years old. There was a rag before his folded legs with a few copper coins scattered across it, and cradled in his hand, pressed to his lips, was the curiously-curved instrument he used to make a living.

The lilo flute looked like a rounded oval shell of metal, with a small spout protruding from the middle of one side and a series of holes along the top that one covered or uncovered for notes and pitch. Otherwise it was simple, unadorned, made of a base metal and not even worth stealing.

“So my young friend,” Zevran said when he was near. “What have you heard today?”

Tamir looked up with a laughing smile in his blind, white eyes. “Three men, Zevran. One is wearing chainmail, one is wearing leather, and the third has a loud voice and smelled like violets. He was nice. He gave me three silvers.” The boy patted a pocket in his ragged shirt, which jingled.

Zevran dropped him five more. “Anything else?”

“I heard Barono say he wanted room number two, with his men to stay in the common room to look out for trouble. He said he is waiting for a friend, but sounded nervous.”

He dropped two more, and Tamir started collecting the small bounty, feeling the patterns on the coins before pocketing them. He smiled up again and said, “Thank you, ser!” before returning to his previous song.

“That tune is almost a dirge,” Zevran noted. “A pretty dirge, but a dirge all the same.”

“So you like it?” The child beamed. “That’s worth another silver, isn’t it? I made it up myself. I call it Light in the Darkness.”

“Very poetic. Now excuse me for a moment. When I return you can play the full thing for me and we will see about that extra silver, yes?”

Tamir nodded enthusiastically and lifted the flute to his lips again.

Zevran slipped around the back to look for alternate access to the second floor.

It wasn’t over as quickly as he’d hoped. A misfire of the first spring-bow had sent his mark bawling for help and plunging out of the room and onto the landing beyond, forcing Zevran to chase or flee. By the time he’d made his way fully into the room Barono’s henchmen had made it up the stairs and a fierce fight had ensued, but Zevran had used the close-quarters to his advantage with both adversaries wielding large weapons. One had been cut down quickly, the other fled after his master towards the common room.

The quarrel from the second bow missed as well, sinking through the wooden planks low by the front door, and he’d had to move very fast indeed to intercept Barono before he made it outside with several other fleeing patrons.

Cursing himself for the poor execution of a kill even if it had been successful, Zevran prudently went back upstairs and left the way he’d come rather than risk ambush at the front door.

He climbed nimbly out of a second-storey window and navigated the way to the ground with care, not wanting to injure himself with a foolish fall brought on by haste. Dusting himself off and muttering that he’d never waste his time on a one-shot crossbow again, he retrieved the cowled, nondescript cloak he’d stuffed into a barrel and slunk around a side-alley to the front of the inn to see if any sort of commotion would require that he make his way back to the nest via different route.

He became quickly aware of a female voice quite close to the front door. The unseen speaker sounded both frightened and consoling, but the fear was hard to notice but for a tremble in tone, as though she was trying to conceal the emotion.

Zevran risked a peak around the corner and saw a Chantry Sister kneeling before the beggar boy. Tamir was still sitting up against the wall of the inn, but that was only because he was pinned to it - the steel head of Zevran’s bolt protruded from his thin chest and blood-soaked shirt, keeping his posture erect even as his blond head sagged.

“My son,” the woman was repeating gently to the bleeding child, “do not be afraid. For the innocent child there is no fear of death, only welcome in the arms of the Maker.”

Zevran began to pull back, hesitated, then lowered his hood to cover pointed ears and distinguishing tattoos. He rounded the corner and knelt beside the Sister to get a closer look at the wound. If it had pierced nothing vital…

The woman looked at him with tear-moistened eyes. “Ser,” she murmured. “Maker bless you for your concern, but…”

She trailed off, and Zevran knew she was correct in what she did not say. Tamir would not live, perhaps not even with the help of a mage’s arts. He cupped the small elf’s cheek and lifted his head gently. “Tamir? Can you hear me?”

“Zevran?” The white-filmed eyes blinked at him a couple of times and squinted. He smiled suddenly, a look of wonder on his face. “Your eyes shine like the Golden City…”

Then he was still.

Zevran didn’t move for a moment, then carefully let Tamir’s head sag once more.

“Did you know him, ser?” the Sister asked.

“No.” Zevran shook his head. The boy had been one of many making a living on the streets, one of those people you saw around and maybe remembered if they lived long enough to be seen more than a few times.

He glanced down to the urchin’s side, where the lilo flute had tumbled from lax fingers to the dirt. When the Sister lowered her head, closed her hands and began a prayer to the Maker, he took the instrument in hand and slid it quickly into a pocket within the cloak before moving away, the last rites to another dead beggar following him as he left down the street:

“Though all before me is shadow,
“Yet shall the Maker be my guide.
“I shall not be left to wander the drifting roads of the Beyond,
“For there is no darkness in the Maker's Light
“And nothing that He has wrought shall be lost…”

The instrument was just small enough to fit into one of the larger crucibles stored in the Crow laboratory, most commonly used to rendering down certain ingredients for poisons. The flute was not made of an expensive metal, merely tin, and it would not require the heat of a forge to melt.

After several minutes of holding the tongs and crucible over a small fire in the hearth, Zevran tipped the molten remains into a round mould and let it set before breaking the wooden blank open with a careful blow.

The resultant ball he added to his belt, to the growing collection of what had once been a variety of instruments touched by fate, by death…then he raised his hood and stalked back out into the darkness.

@Corker - I like your Dalish!Zev In character with his mercy-killing attitude too. It's a shamethe game Zev doesn't offer his 'services' to reluctant Wardens (like in this instance and with Ruck).

@Sarah - rofl, poor gullible Zevran...I have to admit when he was telling that story the 'begging on the hands and knees' made me think of, er, other activities rather than speech, but I suppose you couldn't include them in this forum. XD

@wildannie - I wonder if Zev actually felt anything for the guy, or if it was just being the first hit that got to him... Nice emotion in this.

@caridounette - Taliesen momento! Good idea. Except for a few out of place words your English was easy to read, too.

@TanithAeyrs - Ah, I saw this in your blog. Once again, I enjoyed it.

@Hilde - You know, I really wouldn't have been surprised if Howe had been hoping to get the throne for himself. I doubt he'd have *managed* it, but still. And Anora! Will Zev tell his new companions what he learned?

@Sarah #2 - When all's said and done I suppose there's little 'risk' of plagiarism by reading entries before writing. Speaking for myself, however...it's just my mentality to not want to read other stuff during the creative process. It stops me from worrying I might have lifted ideas and makes my paranoid brain feel better *knowing* that the result is all mine and not influenced by other peoples' brilliance.

and I was wondering..... isn't it a bit disturbing when the warden is an elf and romance Zevran?
I mean, is Zev seeing Rinna when he is with elven female warden? or compare them? (don't know if you see what I mean)
what do you think?

@ Shadow of Light Dragon: Oh, that was just so sad. That poor kid...at least Zevran took something to remember him by even if his carelessness was what ultimately got him killed.



@Kornichon: I don't think the shared species would be enough to do it. Maybe if they looked similar or had similar personalities then it would remind him but just the species? Doubt it. I also don't think it's creepy for the Warden to remind him of Rinna. She was his first love (or the first person he thought he loved) and so no matter the gender or the species there's probably going to be a comparison to not only her but to Taliesin, too, because they are really his only frame of reference as far as attachments go. Actually, I was more disturbed when Leliana started telling me about how I was just like Marjolaine roughly two seconds after I killed her.

@Kornichon Yay hairs! I like a Zevran with no shiny legs ( reminds me of my old barbies) I always think he has very pale blond hairs, that why we dont see it. the bedbug wih flees is hilarious

@Hilde Writing a part for Anora in that scene is very interesting. I keep thinking that if she was in Antiva she would be some crowmaster (well if she was raised in that culture, not just dumped there)

@Tanith The end with the kids is just so sad. What will Zev do with his? I cant imagine Talissen will treat his apprentice any good, but you really got me wondering about how Zevran would act with a new recruit under his charge. 

@Shadow  More Zev with kid ! I really liked. if he had survived, maybe he could have taught some poesy skill  to Zevran. You never know when that will come useful

@maradeux  Well my male CE Warden isnt dumb...  lets say hes a bit of a lost bird, shall we. he he . Hes really young and never been raised with an idea of 'the big picture' so he pretty much turns to Zev for that. They make such a lovely opposite couple.
