I was gonna  say... I like the interaction you put between Zevran and Carlotta ( love that name too, it sounds Antivan). Its a good rendering of his second mission. I say that girl had it comming !

@Corker - I missed your story when I went back to read them all after I finished mine - sorry. It was wonderful, your Dalish Zev shows so much compassion, I think you did a good job with how his personality would have developed without so many years in the Crows.

@Shadow - commented on your blog, but again, wonderful.

Recruitment question, y'all!

I'm tearing through a Dalish playthrough this weekend and I very nearly turned down Zevran's offer to join the group. Through the proud-and-free Dalish filter I had on, it sounded really repulsively servile, especially coming from a flat-ear. Ew, no, stopping offering to clean my armor! Have some pride, man!

I *wanted* to turn down his offer and propose a counter-offer, but I suspected that no would mean no, with possible options of "kill him" or "let him go." Can anyone confirm/deny that? I've never seen a discussion of the great dialogue option you get if you turn him down the first time, so I'm thinking there isn't one...

You can tell him at first you do not accept, and you can even send him after Loghain. However, if you set him free or kill him, that's that.

@ ICevol: thanks for sharing. You have a complex double-cross going there, and I LOVE your pirate Zev. It would be fun to see you continue this story and find out what happens.

@Kornichon: I don't think the shared species would be enough to do it. Maybe if they looked similar or had similar personalities then it would remind him but just the species? Doubt it. I also don't think it's creepy for the Warden to remind him of Rinna. She was his first love (or the first person he thought he loved) and so no matter the gender or the species there's probably going to be a comparison to not only her but to Taliesin, too, because they are really his only frame of reference as far as attachments go. Actually, I was more disturbed when Leliana started telling me about how I was just like Marjolaine roughly two seconds after I killed her.

hmm yeah sure the specie of the warden is not the most remining point...
but that make me wonder if falling in love with the warden is not a bit quick after Rinna's death? (even if everyone have their own time to get over a loss)
but in fact I don't find the good words to explain what I mean, so... yeah Leliana creeps me out >_<

Thanks, Tanith!  Pirate!Zevran was a lot of fun to write.  I found it intriguing to explore how he might behave from a position of power as opposed to the circumstances he finds himself in during the game plot.

It's all Hilde's fault, really Image IPB

The double-cross idea was the major extension in the story.  Plotting out the internal logic of why Alek and Alistair were kidnapped was fun but took a while to figure out.  I tried to stay fairly close to what we know of Ferelden history/politics while (obviously) removing the Grey Warden angle and replacing it with the Navy.

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it!  Image IPB

You think the Warden is a rebound relationship for Zevran?

Hmmm, a bit less than a year has passed since Zevran took the warden contract (according to dialog) so it's not that soon afterwards.

Also, though, (donning flame-proof suit here), I have my doubts about the depth of Zevran's feelings towards Rinna.  When he fell in love with the warden, he says he had no clue what love is, and he had to sort everything out.  It's like how he considered Taliesen a good friend, until he becomes good friends with the warden, and then he says he never had a friend before.

It's like, at least to me, that before the warden, the depth of feelings, of relationships, was far shallower.  It wasn't until he either became close friends or fell in love with the warden that he realized what friendship/love truly was.

Edit: Even if he felt he loved Rinna, he was so quick to not trust her and to let her be killed.  He felt no bitterness towards the person who killed her. He was sad that Taliesen had to die, not relieved, not feeling vindicated.  It seemed that when he was confessing about Rinna, it was more than he had done this horrible thing, but also what exactly he was, and what his worth as a person was.

For different reasons I am sure that there can't be "true love" between two Crows. It's not possible. So - no "real love" neither for Rinna nor for Taliesen. The warden is Zevran's first "true love", the first he shows his feelings (as well as he could), the first one he can trust.

I agree 100%!

On another note, I just realized a huge lore problem with the Zevran romance Awakening slides...  *le sigh*.

The Antivan Crows stole my warden's Vigilance sword.  So there's no real way that my warden could be the leader of the Crows with Zevran (heh, no need to steal the co-leader's sword).

Argh.  Hmmmm, I guess I seriously do have to keep with the endings in my head!

Edit: I guess I just have to figure they killed enough of the crows to get them off Zevran and the Warden, and that they continue to adventure.  I like that better anyway.  They steal the sword and get some sort of petty satisfaction from that!  Or something :/

There's always the possibility that the sword got stolen pretty quickly before you left Amaranthine or it got stolen during the process of conquering the Crows and then they lost it so you couldn't get it back.

Well Zevran can be a bit overdramatic with the nevers and the always ... its like when ig ive him the gloves after giving him a couple of gold bars, he goes saying he never got a gift before  :P

But seriously, im with you on that. I think Rinna was his best try at being happy within the Crows. He does say in the Rinna conversation that he thought she was all he wanted. At that point, that probably meant someone wicked and shallow enough to survive in the organisation. I dont know how to explain, but to me she had to have closed her heart just as Zevran did in order to survive. so no true love there. Two wounded birds helping each other cope maybe ?

And Talissen was his best try at trust and friendship. Knowing how Zev is ready to give his life to protect a Warden friend, i expect there could have been an altercation between Zev and Talissen about the Warden contract. It was extremely dangerous and Talissen decided to let Zevran go alone. so no real friendship there.

Sigh No wonder he tried to die at the hands of the Warden when they met...  :crying:

@Kornichon  In my Wardens, its probably the Brosca who would reminded him most of Rinna. Its not the apperance but the kind of person she was.

Actually, Taliesen offered to help Zevran kill the wardens.  Zevran told him not to come (*grin* should I say how you get this particular dialog?).

But yes, what you said about Rinna makes a lot of sense.  I like that a lot!

Edit: And yes, Zevran's dialog is kind of weird, especially if you give him the boots before you give him the gloves.  But I get the meaning -- usually there was a cost to everything; he was not used to someone being nice to him just because.  A very sad life :(

It is.  During his friendship dialog, you first have to choose, "I consider you a friend," and after he offers to prevent the warden's untimely death, you have to tell him, "I don't need any help."

Edit: For male wardens (sorry, I never play them) you have to tell him, "I consider you a comrade in arms."  I think that's the line.  Whichever leads to, "Then allow me to say this..."

Ouch. Even to see it on here makes me sad. I have tried to do the listen reload thing but always feel so guilty. Thanks for sharing it. It is amazing how much dialogue you miss with the not-so-friendly choices. Which I have a hard time stomaching with Zevran.

*grin* This actually is a friendship dialog, not a romance one (his leaving is a romance thing, but is worth seeing and having the discussion with him afterwards at least once, IF you can keep him below adore which is hard).

BUT I always have dwarf kisses :D

ejoslin is definitely right about romancing Zevran but keeping him below "Adore" level being difficult.  I did the "Zevran leaves the fight and discusses Talisan" with Alek, and it was REALLY tough to keep him below Adore so I could see the conversation.  It worked for Alek's character, though -- he got with Zevran on the rebound from Morrigan (the whole matricide request was creepy and a huge turn off for him, so he dumped her Image IPB).

While Zev and Alek had tent time, he didn't give Zev any of the plot gifts until after the Talisan fight (Alek is a bit bratty and self absorbed, so it just didn't occur to him).  It worked in character for how I RP-ed Alek, even though I was metagaming to get the result I wanted LOL
