Dawn - thanks! :D It's screenshot + photoscape. The quality of screenshot was low, but I love their pose there, so I decided to do something with it - and instead of trying to "clean" it, I aplied several filters to get the old photo look. :) I love that effect - I did the same for young Wynne and her Templar. :)

Alex - The first two are from the mod Grey Wardens of Ferelden, from DA Nexus. The third one is from th mod Rogue Items, you need to join the group GMTA at BSN to get it.

edit: lol I'm starting to feel bad about all self-plugs... but here, have another gif with tortured Zev: Identity Crisis

Ah, okay. I'll take a look then. Do they accept new members?

Edit: For the photo, have  you also tried greyscalling it and applying a Sepia tone to make it appear like an old photo? That might look pretty cool ^^

Speaking of a Tell, ::thrusts one gnarled hand into the air defiantly:: I... live.

I require more definite proof of this.

What, do I have to take a picture or something?

No, just produce some crisp new fanfic!

Re bards:  I just can't take this specialization seriously.  I can work with hiding in plain sight, becoming ethereal, or shooting an arrow that bursts and hits six people at once, but singing to demoralize the enemy I just don't buy.

I've been to some really bad choral concerts, and the worst they did was make me feel mildly uneasy.

I have to thank you, Klidi. Reading your Failed to Fail has made me get back to work.. >.>
I have a whole text file dedicated to chapter organization now and I've been getting back to it... Only problem is, I'm writing it in a weird order. lol

It's a Gaelic thing, I think, and has a lot less to do with singing than satirizing/cursing and intimidating music.

I never understood the bagpipes as war music until I watched "The Buccaneer" (1958 movie) about the Battle of New Orleans.  Jean Lafitte and the Americans are waiting as the British advance.  In the fog, so you can't see them.  And then the bagpipes start up.  And it's just 30-60 sec of fog and bagpipes and knowing that the enemy is coming and you can't see him.  Pretty freaky.

not to be judgemental...

...but perhaps you're not thinking of the proper type of music?  if a horde of barbarians, or heavily armed knights, were running at you, singing practically any heavy metal song by manowar, i think you would feel more than mildly uneasy.

A Bard class is kind of a common thing for gaming. The bards are meant to lower or raise moral to encourage you to continue fighting, but Fantasy games take it further by giving their song or other performances magical-like affects.

Think about it this way, in old wars, they actually did have people using a drum or sounding a horn or other instrument as a way to signal, raise moral, or keep them to a rhythm as they fought. Add in the fantasy elements, and you have a bard.

It does work, really, that's the point of a bard. Shouts and war cries also seem to have the same effect, but that's an entirely different thing there.

Heavy metal by heavily armored knights? That is a scary thought :D

Time for self plug: new chapter of FtF is finally up!

Also to add: Music is meant to give an emotional response. When you are watching a movie, certain instrumental pieces might be placed at just the right spot so they get across the emotion the scene is trying to convey. Sure, the scene may really be sad, but the music is TELLING you to be sad (if done right). This is one of the main reasons why Bards work.

@ Klidi - Yay! Time to go read! xD

One thing also to remember about bards is that in most fantasy traditions (including Dragon Age), bard 'powers' involve magic. Though it's not particularly explained well in Dragon Age as to how the bardic abilities tie in to the Fade, I could pull an explanation out of somewhere that would give it a lore spin (like I was able to with the rogue stealth abilities). Bards in a world without magic is more problematic, but even in our world, the tale of Orpheus is fairly prominent as the proto-typical 'bard'.

And I've published a new story that has Zevran as a major character in it. 'Tis Jorath Amell, my evil Warden, so be warned... It's a five-parter which I'll be posting over the next week or so.

Oh, another evil Amell? I love you xD
I've started thinking my Amell was evil, but it's mostly the lyrium I think. >.>

And someone kick me. I really wanted to draw a man with long white hair, so I drew my Amell with his father... who is a Templar. This is going to be fun to write into my story later... But he's so pretty... I have to work on making him actually looking older than his son...

Edit: And I just wrote a fairy-tale sounding backstory for him and Revka Amell. There's something wrong with me.

though i imagine a bunch of voice-cracking, prepubescent choirboys, coming across the battlefield, singing 'kum bay yah' would make many a brave man flee in horror....

::ahem::

it's a creative week this week, because i also just published another chapter of Bannon & Zevran. links are in my signature, depending on which part of the story you need to catch up with.

oh, and i think... yes! Bannon & Zevran has officially passed the 200,000 word mark! (yes, like their first anniversary of publishing, i kinda missed their 100k mark. oh well.) is it a novel yet? :X

I'd rather have them running in on the battlefield singing the Brunen G song!

www.youtube.com/watch

Or Klingon war song:

www.youtube.com/watch

This is the reason bards work, right? Then again, this is more mob mentality isn't it? Everyone's singing together and it gives you courage.

I can imagine; you are ready to battle. You're scared out of your wits, afraid you will die. Your blood rushing, your palms sweaty, knees weak... And then, someone begins to sing. A familiar song, one that you have known for a long time. Someone else joins in, they blend together and others follow. You raise your head, and your voice enters the harmony. Your spirit lifts as the ones around you grant you courage, because you truely believe in the words of this song. You would die for your friends, you would die for your honor. There's nothing more glorious!

Alexmancer, You are right. I lived in the Soviet Union, and I remember the songs that are sung during the military celebrations and demonstrations can be very inspiring.

The value of the bard, raising the morale of party members, it is difficult to overestimate.

Harmony? Lol. The only goal of war songs is to increase adrenaline.

Soldiers are not afraid only that they will be killed, but also that they will have to kill someone else. The rhythm, loudness, simple, repetitive slogans as lyrics - it's all clever manipulation, in order to elicit emotional and psychological response from the soldiers. Then they are more willing to risk their life and kill others.

Terrible as it sounds, it is necessary during the war. I can confirm that even civils, listening those songs in bunkers feel more at ease with their situation, and more wiling to endure it - because there is this shared "courage".

If you've ever seen Kenneth Branagh's Henry V movie, there's a scene in the movie with music that never ceases to give me chills. Definitely not a 'leading into battle' scene, but absolutely beautiful and haunting nonetheless.

Non Nobis? It's a wonderful song. Though that's not a war song - at least in taize told us it was thanksgiving hymn: Non nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed nomine tuo da gloriam - not to us, Lord, not to us, but to your name be glory. It was one of my favourites. :)

It still shows that bards are viable! xD

The point was: Songs elicit an emotional response.

Is this brainwashing? Yes, probably. But as stated, it is NEEDED for war. How else could these people go through all that without becoming incredibly depressed or terrified? It's for morale, it's for strength, comrademanship, etc.

i have to say, my number one fight song is dope's "die, m**($&f*($%er, die." :X yeah... explicit lyrics, so i wont link to it. ;)

music does have power. i was in a high school marching band. it was like a beast. actually, i think that's how i came up with the descriptions for the grey warden bond. feeling like part of something bigger and badder.

And why not?!  Richard Cheese did a cover of that song.  It's pretty good.

Do they allow music like that on air in British television series?
