Ridiculously Awesome: The Zevran Thread

Speaking of Crows, I just recently realized they call themselves that because crows are an omen of death in Western culture. God, I feel stupid. Like Sten, I was very literal minded and thought, "Why do they call themselves crows? Crows are scavengers, not predators. I mean, sure, 'Antivan Crows' SOUNDS cool, but--" and so on. Then I remember how many folk stories say that if you see a crow, your doom/death is not far behind. You see an Antivan Crow, your death is not far behind. Har.
THEN, having made the Crow = Omen of Death connection, I realized that Zevran has a subtle crow motif going for him too. Morrigan is more obvious since she wears literal crow feathers, has black hair and clothes, has a crow-like obsession with shiny jewelry, etc. But, it's there for Zevran too.
Zev has a habit of collecting and hoarding little trinkets that don't mean much to anyone else, but have sentimental value to him. Like the earring he nicked off the prince that was wearing it... and nothing else. Like the "mixed metal rounds" belt he starts off with, made from mementos of various conquests melted down into nondescript tokens on a single belt. "The contributing items were likely worth more than the result, but that's not the point." (Crows are stereotypically famous for filling their nests with shiny little trinkets that's seen as junk by others.)
Zevran also seems to love things that sparkle and shine. One of his party camp animations is picking up something off the ground, presumably because it's shiny. Zevran also loves Antiva, which he describes as "a glittering gem of a city." While not as obvious as Morrigan, he also likes gold, silver and jewels. His gifts are high quality "pure gold" and "pure silver" bars, and he's apparently obsessed with treasure. It doesn't come up often, thankfully, but in ambient party comments he seems eager to find treasure, and if you aren't romancing him after you defeat Taliesin, one way you can get him to stay is "Don't you want to stay for the treasure?" Once again, that crow-like interest in shiny objects.
So, yeah. While these were all character quirks that I enjoyed about Zev, I now think it's really cool that they tie into this subtle crow motif. Again, more subtle than Morrigan (whose crow motif is kind of "slap your face" obvious about it), but still there.
Did anyone else notice or have any thoughts on this?

Animation (picked up something from the ground) in the camp is at Alistair too. I think it's not gold.Faerunner wrote...

Crow - a mystical character. In many cultures, Crow is associated with signs of death, his cry portends trouble. Crow respected and feared. About carrion Aidana correctly said.
By the way, Aidana, этот Зевран похож на солидного Гильдмастера Дома Воронов. Ещё спустя лет 15-20

Liked your crow mythology material, never did get DAO's symbolism of crows for an assassin's guild. I found this related quote from Amerindian lore: crows are...
"a carrier of souls from darkness into light and guards against fear in the dark; also a shapeshifter; keeper of spiritual law; likes to steal shiny bright objects; always a clown. Look for the bright and shiny aspects of life."
True that this also seems to have a Morrigan connection, throwing in the "shapeshifter" aspect as well. Makes me wonder if the writers really did intend all the connections when they introduced crows into the game background (and had them bouncing around on the ground in some locations) and came up with the personalities for Zev and Morrigan or if they just sort of stumbled into the symbolism instinctively. The "harbinger of death" concept does work though.
You also got me reading up on why crows like shiny stuff. Odd that there's no definitive answer- some saying shiny things just look like a potential food source, others saying it's for decorating nests to impress potential mates, one saying it's only ravens and magpies (and Shale) that say "Oooh, shiny," not crows. Ah, well, the reputation of crows is there thematically anyhow, and now Zev's odd interest in bars of precious metal makes more sense than it had previously. Too bad we can't gift him all those silver bars we get from raiding Howe's warehouse supply.

IIRC, Gaider's been on the record saying he had no idea that Morrigan was a Celtic battle/death goddess associated with ravens, and that the character was named after a friend's RPG character (or something? it's been years, now). But I do wonder if the graphic designer who gave her that tuft of feathers knew a bit of Irish mythology.
Isn't there an in-game banter that lampshades the "crows are scavengers, what sort of dumb name is that?" With... Sten or Shale? They tried 'Kestrels,' but "it didn't sing, it didn't dance," Zevran says. Makes me think the name of the Antivan assassin's guild was something that went through multiple revisions in the Writers' Pit.

speaking of the kestrels....
when i heard zevran delivering that line in the game, i wasn't quite sure what he said. i THOUGHT he said "castros." and then the follow-up line "it didn't sing; it didn't dance" i thought was some sort of joke about "the sopranos."

Zevran Open Wedding Mod Help and Testing
If you do not have time for testing BUT you have any game saves with a male player in love with Zev, we also need them. Preferably just before killing the Arch Demon or post coronation (if you have accepted his earring). Please upload these to the Game Save for Zevran Open Wedding Testing (instructions are there on how to package the folders)
Thank you very much!!!

I have a M!Cousland that is slated for Zev, but he's just to Ostagar (and has been stuck there for the past 10 months
I am still working with the ThaneMOD group, though we should be releasing relatively soon(ish). I would be interested in helping test your MOD, but I may not be available to do so, in the time frame you are needing. If you think you will still need testing come around the beginning of the new year, let me know.
Looking forward to this MOD, btw.

I thought you all might be amused to know that you are solely responsible for me buying the PC game so I could mod it to the hilt for better Zev time lol! Gah! that wicked elf is delicious! My male Dalish warden thinks so too.
Anyway huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread, you have done me a great service with your suggestions. Haven't had this much fun in years!

Currently, I'm playing as a female elf mage who fell into a romance with Alistair. She didn't trust Zev at first, considering that he's an assassin of course. That and she was turned off by his upfront flirting at a point where she was about to kill him.
I know it was a risk to put up with him by adding him to my collection of a ragtag bunch of misfits, especially since the others disapproved (had Alistair, Leliana and Morrigan along with me when we encountered Zev on the road). But I rationalize this that Zev's explanation was reasonable enough for my elf to pass up on killing him (and she's generally pragmatic). However, that didn't mean that my elf mage would trust him on the get go. Every time he'd flirt at her in camp, she'd just roll her eyes at him. But his charms eventually began to rub on her, and she played his game.
Zevran is endearing in his own way, and when I reached that point where I had to choose between him and Alistair, my heart broke at the way he reacted when I chose Alistair over him. He takes the decision so cooly, and yes he understands that even a friendship is worth pursuing with my mage--but what got to me the most was how his expression betrayed the warm tone in his voice. He had the saddest look I've seen on anyone in my party, and that was when I began to love him.
Ugh, if I had known earlier that Alistair would break up with my elf mage at the Landsmeet, I would've gone to Zevran in a hearbeat. My elf could've used a bit of that comfort...but alas, I think I came to that point in my dialogue branches with him where it would only go up to 100 'Friendly' instead of switching over to 100 'Love'. Regardless, Zevran was right in how he said that even a friendship was worth pursuing...
When I gave him the Dalish elf gloves right after the Talisen encounter, he lit up in a way that my elf never saw up lit up before. She cherished this a lot, and when he told her, 'So this is how it's like to have a friend' that he never had a real friend before, I just wanted to cry. Zevran has gone through so much, having grown up in a rough environment and knowing only the way of the prostitues and the Assassin life...that sings such as simple friendship or true love have been taken away from him.
So I really don't understand all the dislike towards this character, about how he's 'sleazy' and 'too calous in his morals about killing someone'. Well, I never had much of a problem with this. I mean come on, this guy is an assassin so of course he's not going to feel much remorse about killing his target. I don't know; perhaps I'm used to this kind of ideology since I played Assassin's Creed first before Dragon Age. In a way, he kind of reminds me of Ezio from Assassin's Creed II. Both are 'Latin lovers' (or in Zevran's case, a fantasy version of that trope), charming ladies men (with accents to die for) that were raised in prosperous cities. Yet the marvelous sights of Antiva and Italia contrast to the kind of upbringing that these assassins had: both grew up around prostitutes or at least knew someone in the family that worked with the courtesans. And while this may seem glamorous to some, in reality, both went through rough lives: Zevran not knowing much about his biological family before being sold to the Crows, and Ezio's family being slaughtered in betrayal that he joined the Assassin Brotherhood in retaliation. Both had been heralded into an Order at such a young age, that it would change their lives forever...
Pardon my rambling, but I feel so much for Zevran that he's become my precious little Crow, ahh!
The crowning moment for me was his final speech at the city gates, right before I went to slay the archdemon, and of course what he proposed after I slayed the archdemon (decided to not sacrifice myself in this playthrough). He was so grateful to have known someone like my Warden and proud to call her as a 'friend'--best friends, even. So much that I offered him to come with me on my travels should we ever bump each other again the future (although I later found out the hard way that I don't ever meet him again in Awakening. Boo!)
Still, the ride of getting to know Zevran, even as a friend, has been such a blast and I'm glad I got to know him for who he is. But now I'm itching for that friendship to become something more, so I'm going to go back and make a Warden that will romance him!
So yeah, here's my two cents from a new, doting Zevran fan.

I had a similar experience to you in my first game, in that I found his initial flirting offputting and didn't trust him at first, though treated him kindly despite my doubts. I had to shut him down when he offered the 'massage', my Warden being with Alistair as yours was, so the romance (such as it is with Zev at that point) ended there, but I didn't regret it. It wasn't until much later in the game, after Taliesin and his offer to join your travels at the end of the game as a friend, that I finally decided I might like the character. I think it took another game (romancing him) and writing fanfiction about him to seal the deal though.
Why do people dislike him with any sort of intensity? Most of the time I think he's not given a chance. If you don't use him as a party member or try to befriend him, you don't get to see far past the surface.
Most of the rest of the time, I think the dislikers are shallow twits...or people who found their Warden unexpected in Zevran's tent because they didn't read between the lines.

I always play male PCs (for the eye candy) so I was left with no choice but to indulge in a little M/M romance with him, since none of the females appealed to my Warden, who was/is (playing same char on PC as I did on PS3 because I get attached) rather amazed that he turned out to be bi curious lol! happily so, however.
I find Zevran to be simply the most intriguing character, he has a relentless optimism regarding his upbringing, his enslavement and the subsequent brutality of his life as a crow. All things which should have turned him into a nasty piece of work, yet rather than being vicious or cold he simply takes each day as it comes, indulging in whatever pleasures come his way and enjoying them fully. Hes really quite Zen when you think about it.
And the payoff when he falls for the Warden is the sort of unwavering loyalty you don't find often. I was beyond crushed when I started Awakenings and got that damned letter- my Zev would never have left his Warden! I think I had the sads even more than my Warden, it honestly felt like I had lost a real person for an hour or two lol! I consoled us both by deciding that we'd run off to Antiva together to sort his Crow issue, but I had been recalled on urgent Warden business... much less painful that way!
I can't thank everyone who puts their efforts into the mods enough, the difference playing it this time round is phenomenal! As much as I enjoyed the PS3 version -which was immensely- the modded PC version is incredible fun- especially the camp scenes! Thank you all so much for your efforts!

It's a nice mod and it was a good job but it doesn't really fit city elf. :3 It just seems more right that they'd have it in the alienage square again with everyone watching instead of just Shianni and Soris and your dad. Plus some people I don't think should even be there like Eamon or Isolde or Teagan or Anora, Idk it's just weird. >.> But it's nice, and at least city elves (and dwarves) finally have one nao. >.> Is the music from the game?

Oh I most certainly will, especially now that I see the Wedding Mod has been released...certainly this will make my upcoming city elf playthrough definitely more interesting. ;D (and as a bonus, I'm also going to make her into a rogue and model her after Rosa from Assassin's Creed II. Speaking of which, I found out that Zevran's voice actor was actually in one of the AC games for a bit. I about lost it from here; just the assassin connections made me LOL. Although I must say that voice is pretty sexy.
I read that Tumblr post that David Gaider replied to, and it's sad to know that Zevran was the least popular romance option out of the 4 available in DAO (although I'm hard pressed to believe the was that unpopular). I think the deal with many people not liking Zevran sort of reminds me of how people complained that Jack from Mass Effect was 'too crass, trying too hard to be a bad girl, etc.'. I mean, unlike the other companions, Zevran and Jack are exactly who they say they are and never once tried to hide it from the main character. Yet it takes a lot of understanding and empathy to get to know a person with so much depth, a patience that many people simply don't have anymore. I get the impression that most gamers would rather have their characters be easy to understand from the get go and breeze through the story for some crazy reason (speed demons? Dude bros just looking for another CoD game? I don't even know).
Although I must also admit that I didn't warm up to Jack for a while, like I did with Zevran. At first I really had no opinion of her; she was useful but I didn't care much for her. It actually took me to writing a fan fiction about Jack and role-playing as her on Tumblr to finally love her, and now I'm thankful that I really took the time to get to know her character inside out (doing character studies changes your view a lot when it comes to these things).
And frankly, I'm tired of superficial heroes in media, so to have people like Zevran or Jack appear in video games was refreshing to see. These are perhaps the most satisfying romance/character arcs that I've had the opportunity to witness.
Indeed, there's something about Zevran's undying loyalty to you that is no match for any other. I think it's even more intense than Alistair's loyalty (which sort of falters when you want to play as a pragmatic Warden and choose Loghain over him during the Landsmeet). There's just something romantic and incredibly touching to see how someone, who came from a rough past and went through so much, has turned around and sworn allegience to you and because of you.LunaFancy wrote...
