Prompt time! Once again, many thanks to Minaleth for the Banner!
Prompt: Zevran, the Instrument of Fate
"I often find myself the instrument of fate, ending these lives for one necessity or another. I console myself with the notion that most of them had it coming."
Anything goes here – one of Zevran’s adventures from before he met the Warden (the Rivani Merchant Prince, the mage in the carriage, Princess Farina, etc.), something from during Origins (actual plot event or an original occurrence), or any time after the death of the Archdemon. So long as it involves Zevran and a target’s death (actual event or his perception of it, or his role as an assassin in general), it’s all good – dramatic or humorous responses are equally welcome.
Time: 1 hour
Formats: All formats of response are encouraged -- drawing, story, image manip, poem, comic, filk, etc.
Deadline: Thursday, September 9th @ 9:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time (GMT - 4). Winner to be announced the morning of Friday, September 10th (~ 9:00 AM EDT).
Prize: Zevran story of your choice. You can either provide me a prompt or I’ll make something up. Zev with any of the NPCs from Origins is fair game. If you want the story to include one of your own Wardens, I’ll need some personality/characterization info and/or links to stories you’ve written about him/her to get into voice (I’m new around here and haven’t read much DAO fanfic outside of what’s been posted in this thread). I’m comfortable writing Gen, Slash and Het, if that’s a concern

Not sure if anyone else has seen this, but it gives me hope that jenovan was right and we may get a Zevran action figure eventually
DC Unlimited's Dragon Age Origins Series 1
Not sure why they'd give us a freaking Genlock instead of another companion, but I'll take whatever indication I can get that a Zevran figure could possibly be in my greedy little hands someday...
Edited to add: DC Unlimited is affiliated with DC Direct, a company that has made many action figure collections in the past. I'm glad to see DC Direct working on these, since they will be good quality products if my past collecting experience holds true
Yep, those are what I was thinking of. ;D Bioware sells 'em in their store if you want 'em direct and all that. XD I'm not exactly pleased with the first lineup (I mean, I'm not even a huge Ali fan, but no Alistair? And a Genlock? Really?), but I'm torn between going "meh" or getting them to encourage BW to make other characters. ;PICevoL wrote...

Female action figures, man. <_< The only really nice ones I have personally are Final Fantasy figures, totally different aesthetic. (I guess some of the Angela ones are nice... but not pretty.) But yeah.Tellervo wrote...
Why does Morrigan look ridiculous.... ;_;
They'll probably just make Alistair plushies and move on to DA2. Let's not kid ourselves.

I've been thinking a bit why WH has bothered me so much, and Awakening as well, and I think this is the place for my latest whine (sorry!). I know quite a few people will disagree with me, and that's fine. This is just my opinion, and while I usually won't admit it, my opinion is not infallible!
Zevran's story in Origins is one of redemption. You start with a hardened assassin, broken and suicidal, and let him live and join you, maybe because you find him sexy, maybe because you just like him for some reason, maybe because you want to find out more about the organization that has a contract out on you. Or whatever.
During the months, you can get to know him, hear about the monster he was, hear about the training that strives to take away his humanity, hear about his regrets over his actions and the bitterness over his training. You learn that from day one, he has never had a choice, and when given the freedom to make one, he has no clue even how to do so.
Through the warden, he learns a completely new meaning of friendship, and perhaps of love as well -- that these things most of us take for granted, he never knew in a real sense before. As your lover, he falls in love so hard that he will not be with you without a commitment for the future. Even sex takes on a whole new meaning and becomes, for him, and expression of love. He vows to stay with you until the end, and wherever you go, he will follow. As a friend, he acknowledges that the warden is the one who will protect him, not the other way around (laughs about the warden crushing the crows skulls while he mocks them).
If the warden does the Ultimate Sacrifice, he breaks, and after a year goes after the Crows. He never lets anyone close to him again. He's a shell of the wonderful, loving, compassionate man he was; everything that was good about him died with the warden.
So Awakening bothers me. Not so much that he went after the crows -- they most likely would have to be dealt with. But why would he go without the warden? He acknowledges that the warden can kill the crows, and has vowed to be by the warden's side. Of course, in Awakening the crows are no longer intimidated by the warden as they were in Origins, so something changed.
Ok, so I deal with the fact he goes after the Crows, and the warden doesn't because, perhaps of gray warden business? Fully planning on catching up.
But according to the Witch Hunt map, this is taking place 2 years after the mother is killed. I don't know about anyone else, but having them be separated nearly 3 years, with the warden having to chase after Zevran, destroys the ending of the love story for me in a major way. Origins ended with two people completely committed and devoted to each other. Awakening takes away the part where the man wanted to be redeemed, to begin again, and puts him back to being the cold-hearted assassin instead of the compassionate man. And Witch Hunt makes it clear that a long separation happens because of this.
Anyway, I suppose it's not my story, and I can accept that Zevran goes to Antiva. But without a damn good explanation of why this happened, it really does cheapen the entire relationships. Zevran wasn't really redeemed, and he leaves the one person he felt a commitment to, whom he knew could help him fight his battles as he helped him/her fight theirs (which, truly, was far more dangerous).
le sigh. I still think the DLC/Mod is a fabulous idea. It's probably the only way we WILL get that damn good explanation!
