Love means never having to say you're sorry.
The Landsmeet was over. The Nobility had been united, Loghain slain, and Anora imprisoned until after the blight. Alistair was now the king, and he walked the long hallway in Eamon's Denerim estate to check up on his friends. The past few weeks were like a whirlwind. Once Eamon had recovered, he immediately suggested Alistair take the throne. Something he was not looking forward to then. And to make things worse, Dan agreed with Eamon. At the time Alistair felt betrayed by his closest friend. Dan knew he did not want the throne, and never wanted any part of it. And now here he was walking the halls as king. Servants and guests all bowed to him as he walked by. He gave each a slight nod because he was not sure how he was supposed to respond. It didn't seem right to just ignore them.
As he drew nearer to the room his friends were all sitting in, a lump began to form in his throat. How was he supposed to treat them? And what were they going to do when he entered the room? Were they going to bow to him as well? That thought did not sit well with him for they were his friends, not subjects to rule. He had fought beside each one, bled with them, dined with them, laughed with them, and even cried with them. He could hear them talking and laughing as he got close to the door. They were reliving the moments of the Landsmeet. Dan was telling them about the duel between him and Loghain. And that Dan then named Alistair king and sole ruler of Ferelden. That was one thing he was surprised most about during the Landsmeet, that Dan insisted that Alistair fight Loghain and not himself. He felt honored that Dan felt him capable of defeating Loghain, and until that moment he was not sure he was. But Dan just gave him that look, the one he always did, and Alistair knew that he could.
As he stepped through the door, Dan and the others turned to greet him. Not one of them bowed, but instead came towards him with smiles and pats on the back. He felt relieved at the lack of formality with his friends. And as he told them of the events since the Landsmeet, and the gathering of the armies at Redcliffe, he noticed no difference in his friends towards him. They were still a group of friends, warriors, brothers and sisters, and some lovers. The same group he had travelled with for most of the past year. But there was a small change, they looked to him now with the same look they had always done with Dan. They looked at him as a leader as well as friend. Except Dan. He looked at Alistair as though he was a proud father or older brother. Proud of what Alistair had become. And for the first time he knew why Dan had agreed with Eamon those few weeks ago in Redcliffe.
As he turned to leave, he spoke to Dan, "Walk with me a moment, please."
"Of course, " came the reply.
The two men walked back down the hallway Alistair had walked only moments before. "You know, when you first agreed with Eamon that I should be king, I hated you for that."
"I know," said Dan, "but it was important that you became king. Not just to end the war, or for the sake of Ferelden, but to also become who you were meant to be. I am sorry I put you through all of this, but it is for the better.."
"I do know that now," he said as the two men stopped in the hallway. "When you let me fight Loghain, and then stood there and told the whole Landsmeet that I would rule, I knew it was the right thing. I even think it was that moment that I realized that I wanted it. You had been around these kind of things your whole life, and knew what was needed and what was at stake. I didn't until that moment. But I am glad it was you who did this, and not someone else."
"Alistair, I didn't do it for them, but for you. No longer will you be just the castaway brother or the bastard prince. You are now the king, and no one can take that from you. I did that for you. I am sorry that you went through that agony about it since Redcliffe, but I knew in my gut this was right. I love you as if you were my own brother. In fact, in many ways you are my brother."
"You don't have to apologize. Not to me. Not now. Not ever. Because I feel the same way about you. You are the brother I never really had."
The two men stood there for a quiet moment, and then turned to resume their walk down the hallway.
"By the way. Why didn't you fight Loghain? I am glad you didn't. But why didn't you want to?"
"Because I had my vengeance. Howe killed my entire family," replied Dan. "My need for revenge died with him in that dungeon. I felt it was only fitting that you get yours with Loghain for what happened to Duncan in Ostagar."
"Thank you for that."
