There's another topic (in the DA2 section) that's slightly along the lines of what DahliaLynn was asking in her poll -- What do women like about DA 1 and 2?  I had to backspace over a reply because I get so tired of those "Alistair = whiny loser" posts.

Yeah, I'll avoid. That Alistair whiney crap makes me mad.

It's a pointless discussion. They won't understand our point and we, or at least I, get tired of explaining to them why he is not. I don't know how often I had this discussion with my husband and it was the same. We've decided not to speak about this again ;)

@ Morwen: ask him to join you and then wait for his speech after he reaches "love"  Posted Image

Is it a matter of not understanding or simply not agreeing? Do you understand why some people think Alistair is whiny or is a complete mystery as nothing he says strikes you as even remotely whiny even though he may be perfectly justified to act that way?

(3) asking her questions about her home and community life as though he were jealous of her family bonds rather than contemptuous of her poverty

What conversation does he do this in?

Well I shouldn't have said "questions"; it was actually only one question. It's a follow-up question to a dialogue in which he first tells me about his childhood in the Chantry. I honestly can't remember which question from me triggered the whole conversation, but it wasn't the one in which he describes throwing his mother's amulet across the room. Anyway he told my CE about how isolated he felt in the Chantry and how he never felt like he belonged or was loved or appreciated, and then he asked my CE where her family was and she answered (and I projected a somewhat defensive tone onto the answer, as if daring him to make an insensitive comment about my neighborhood and people), in the Alienage in Denerim. He was neither contemptuous nor condescending; he just said that I must miss them very much and then mumbled something else I can't remember about being away from family. He could have been just sympathetic but I interpreted his tone as being wistful and somewhat jealous that I had family to miss. I didn't get this conversation when playing as my DC because she had pretty much disowned Orzammar and said that her family was with the Wardens.

Morwen the Blackstone Irregulars conscript in the Chantry is painfully easy to find. He's stood near the entrance to the room where the revered mother is, just in front of the locked cabinet. Hit the tab key and you'll see all the NPC's names appear. The conscript stands out as he's one of the few with a unique name.

A general rule of thumb with NPC's in Bioware games is this, if they have a unique name they are either quest givers, involved in a quest or have other important functions.

Oh, I remember that conversation! He's much nicer towards the CE than he is towards the DN when he is all 'You miss your home? That's great but you can't go back.' Actually, he's nicer towards elves in the 'how do you deal with your dead' conversation as well...I'm starting to see where people got the idea he has an elf thing from...

Heh, the OP doesn't get two posts in before he admits it's an Alistair hate thread.  Although some do seem genuinely puzzled at the appeal.

If you can't see it, I don't know what to tell you anyway.

Thanks :) Of course Lothering is overrun so it's too late now but believe it or not I was looking for people with names and particularly people with exclamation marks or big Quest symbols over their heads, which everyone else involved with these "deliver this notice of conscription/termination/recent widowhood" seems to have except for that dude. Oh well. Next time. . .

And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

I completely understand why people might think that Alistair is a very unhappy, continuously complaining companion who often whines.  I've had him in my party when I've played wardens who were uncaring and rude to him.  In the worst case, I actually wanted to punch him a few times because he wouldn't stop with the, "Do this, do that!" comment whenever I'd click on him.  I've said it before here, but I do think that you get the Alistair your warden deserves.  I think that's the case with Zevran, as well.  I've only played one game with Morrigan as a LI, and I can't say it's the same.  But it's possible my game was buggy.  Even though she gave my male warden her ring and he was very nice to her, she never stopped being rude to him, she wouldn't sleep with him and wouldn't talk to him after the ring incident.  He finally gave up on her and married Anora.

What I don't understand is the people who aren't wiling to see that there is more than one side to many of these characters.

I hope, I do understand them. At some point even I thought “that’s enough” and misjudged him as whiny until I started to think about it more closely. I know that my personal opinion of his character isn’t a universal one, but some don’t take the effort to think about the character more closely and simply judge him from the things he is saying without really looking behind it. Maybe I misjudge them too, but if they say “Alistair is a whiny loser” without giving a reason I tend to think they don’t understand instead of they disagree.

He's not just nice, he's totally swoonworthy when you're a Dailsh elf.  Even some of the Dalish men swoon a little.  Ask Ron.  He'll admit it.

It's weird --he and my DC had the playful banter (equal parts friendly, flirty and sassy) going right from the start, while my CE was not exactly rude to him, but definitely kept her distance and didn't coddle him too much. And trust me, Alistair noticed --my DC got consistent +4s and +5s from the great majority of their conversations with the occasional +3 or +2, while my CE got a bunch of +2s with the occasional +1 or +3. I also think my DC gave him more gifts than my CE did (although the ones my CE gave him were perhaps better chosen). And yet, Alistair's approval of my CE is about 12-15 points higher than it was for my DC at a similar point in the story. Not sure how this happened. My CE did manage to avoid the -1, -3 and -9 "Alistair disapproves" penalties that my DC incurred by picking up Shale, picking up Zevran, and allowing Connor to die (respectively), but that should just make it even, shouldn't it?

Sarah may be right --Alistair may just have a thing for elves.

The second I see one of those "Alistair is whiney" people try to see my point of view I will try to see theirs. :P

We've had a couple Alistair converts. Axekix sort of converted, but I think he had a relapse. Giggles converted, didn't he?

Meanwhile, elsewhere in DA2, 70 pages in 24 hours about what size breasts the females should have.

I feel like everyone is entitled to their opinion and I don't need to understand it. Whatever trips their trigger, as long as they don't get on me for what I think.

Well when people like Brockolloly say that DA2 is going to be infested by "bros"...well it's kind of hard to argue against that.

And don't I count as half-converted?
This thread (well the old one) made me change my opinion of Alistair from dislike / ambivalence to indifference / mild sympathy Posted Image

Eh, to be fair, a lot of posts in those threads (there have been many of them) where women asking for a breast reduction. My comment in one of them was "I support this thread and the breast reduction that's being called for!".

It was still full of booby lovers though...
